The thing about Medic is everyone knows he's crazy, but he's got this charm about him that just makes that insanity seem more laughable than problematic. Psychopaths are often quite charming, to the point where even if it seems there's something off about them, people around them will write off the weird vibes because they're just so cool. Medic can be very suave and sophisticated, which makes one forget quite quickly and easily that he enjoys pain and suffering in his down time, and causing chaos and destruction at work. He's the perfect portrayal of a comedic, humanized psychopath, because while it's obvious he's a character and not a real person due to the silly way he's portrayed, he also works on the audience the same way a real-world psychopath works on the people around them: by being a total gentleman who's definitely incapable of hurting anyone because he's a total nerd and/or just so nice and eloquent, therefore putting himself in a position where everyone would be surprised when his true self comes out. And despite the fact the entire fandom is 100% aware he's crazy, this psychotic charm and silly portrayal keeps them from seeing just HOW crazy he actually is.

Something to remember with the medic and people seeing him as charismatic is that it's not just people forgetting he's insane. Some insane people can have a lot of charisma at times, and medic is one of them. His actions might be horrific but he's not just going to go and tell you that you're a guinea pig for his crazy baboon heart experiments.
No, he'll tell you jokes and potentially even become friends with you, then in secret he'll surgically remove your soul without any care for the potential harm that could do because he just cares about the experiments more.

As far as I can tell, Michael has been mentioned, but there isn’t any indication that he is or isn’t alive.

@@fettycheese2498 GTA Online used to take place before GTA5, a few months before the story if I remember right. It wasn't until Gunrunning that it was mentioned the current year at the time was 2017, and it just continued on from that. The heists update (which Series A came with) specifically took place before GTA 5s story, not just because of the Gunrunning tidbit, but also because Lester mentions the Online player to Michael (not the other way around, like you said) when Michael asks Lester if he has any contacts in LS, to which Lester responds that he is working with somebody but they're "too unpredictable" and he'll need to find others. If Lester hadn't done any heists with the player, there's no need to mention them.

I think another interesting thing about Trevor is that his loyalty borderlines unhealthy. If you choose the ending to kill Michael, Franklin will call Trevor to tell his plan, which ends up with Trevor refusing to help kill Michael despite everything Michael has done to him. Michael not only brought him down into a life of crime, Michael also faked his own death while also killing off Trevor's best friend and keeping the millions of dollars that were supposed to go to Trevor during the heist. Even when Trevor returns Michael to confront his past issues Michael still keeps Trevor away. Trevor's constant neglect as a child has broken him, and when he has a single person who helped him once he will idolise and follow that person to the ends of the Earth because he can't afford to lose someone who actually cares for him, even if that one person was exploiting him the whole time.

He had a troubled past that lead him up to be how he is, you can only blame him so much until you look at how he was brought up. Plus having him express emotions like breaking down humanizes him more than most psycho paths because they’re often depicted in media as cold and distant lacking human emotion, but with Trevor we see he can actually experience sorrow. As someone who has dealt with Depression and Anxiety throughout my whole life, Simon's story is the best depiction of what it actually *feels* like to go through this stuff. Literally. Once you strip away the literal events and imagery of the game, the emotions you feel while playing and how they are presented really gives a simulated sense of what life can be like at times. I sight the college level with the "faceless" monsters screaming at you out of the darkness as a good example. The sheer panic and terror you feel, mixed with the dread of knowing there are more of them just beyond the darkness is perfect, and to top it off, the fight requires you to restrain yourself and be calm to kill them. You have to wait for them to emerge from the dark into the light of your phone torch so you can shoot them, rather than simply react on the spot as many of the monsters in the lit streets need you to. Then you got to go collect keys to unlock the door. It's a perfect simulation of how social anxiety often feels. The constant feeling of being seen by everyone while you are blind to everyone else. The panic of dealing with people you encounter yet having to act calm as to not show weakness or difference, all in the name of getting through the day. How goddamn hard it is to do basic things while being under this pressure. That level is done so right, I instantly recognized the flurry of emotions it gave me.
The rest of the game is full of this kind of stuff and it really does put you in the shoes of what it feels like living with an illness like this. I firmly believe games are the only vessel of art than can really put you in the shoes of someone else. The developers of Cry of Fear have clearly dealt with some shit to know how to put this across so accurately.

As someone who is suffering from multiple unwellnesses myself at this time, among other factors. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for this well done and impeccable video. Personally the fictional character who has undoubtedly helped me the absolute most during this confusing, and challenging period of my existence, is the G-man from the half life games. I see him in many ways as a symbol of death, fear, autonomy, magic, mystery, and the balance in between chaos, and control. Since my dad disowned me, my reliance on escapism through obsessing over this character as a coping strategy has undoubtedly increased. He reminds me of my own shadow, a black mirror so to say, and the gold underneath. In many ways I relate to both him, and Gordon Freeman as well. I even designed my villain personas first curus after the H.E.V. suite, but I painted mine neon green instead of orange. I am in the midst of many battles at this time. The G man is one of my imaginary friends, even though I have multiple real friends now, he hasn’t left me, because I need him. I need someone just real enough, who will never leave. He is such an important symbol, idea, and friend to me I see him as a spirit guide as well, and I love him in every sense of the word. He is a man of opposites, like myself. I idolize him. I know exactly what it feels like to live amongst humans, yet always as an observer on the outside looking in, always a detail overlooked, trying so hard to fit the mold, to appear ‘good enough’ by a hypocritical peoples rules. He’s like an angel. My angel. And a demon. He’s like Uriel, Samiel, mystery, magic, death, and trajedy. I love him more than anyone. I feel like he truly understands me, like he comforts me when the world destroys me over and over again. Like every time I die, he alone can understand the pain. But my G-man is always there to pick up the peices, and even though I know he’s not really real, he is simultaneously more impactful to me, and more important to my journey at present than any real person has been. If I were to die tomorrow, I hope the G-man would be the one to take me into Limbo. I think he would be, in my case. My dearly beloved friend, and heart. 💜

One of the things I love about tf2 is that they all may be insane in many ways, they still are all adjusted in their own way. Happiness with family, perusing genius medical treatments that defy modern medicine, even the engineer's machines can be seen as children, something you built and defend. They're people at the end of the day, no matter how they act and their issues that you can see. You can relate because they all have their human moments, laughter, love, life, friendship.
Also, insanity and physopathy are not the same, insanity relates to lack of knowledge and understanding of what you are truly doing, while physopathy is KNOWING what you're doing, but just not caring at all about others, or only in very odd ways. An example is medic reviving sniper after being part of the team that killed him. He is quite intelligent and aware, and can be caring and kind when he wants to. he just often, does not want to.

21 year old guy with autism and depression here.
I can confirm a lot which was said in this video. Outside spheres tend to not understand what it's like to have something like depression. I've dipped my toes into insanity a few times in the past, as I've completely lost my shit before.
And like Trevor, I had a bit of a rough childhood, with a verbally abusive father until he abandoned me.
To say I've had breakdowns before is an understatement. But as also explained in the depression segment, getting help is often hard. For me, it's a combination of many things. My added autism makes it so much harder, as people just don't get it.
And I admit. I feel like people judge me whenever they look at me. Be it in public or whatever. Makes it hard to well... not be isolated.
If I had the real life version of the Second Opinion, it would be saying things that I only ever imagine. Like me imagining beating people up, killing them, or other morbid things. Unlike Simon, I don't have a girlfriend. So I don't know the pain of rejection. But I've seen the betrayal of friends before, and I believe that's close enough.
Don't want this comment to keep going, so I'll cut it short with this message: If you are "Normal", you should feel lucky. I am mentally deranged, and I need help. But said help hasn't been easy to achieve, as I still haven't found any.

I think Father Grigori is more known for Gmod rather than HL2, since just like Medic, we see people give wacky roles/portrayals of him, much more than people analyzing or talking about him as a character. Most likely due to the fact that he can be seen anytime in Gary’s Mod, unlike his origins, where compared to the rest of the game, his section is very short, but this really shows how featuring characters in different context, can undermine what they were originally known for.

I remember if you call Jimmy as Trevor, you can go out and play tennis and whatnot. And you truly do feel a connection. I like how there's not some underlying worry that Trevor is gonna go ape randomly and hurt the kid, no. They're just bonding, enjoying there time together. In a weird way, Trevor is a monster. About Father Grigori. One of the things that make me think less insane of him is the fact that he kills the zombies out in Ravenholem for the reason of him trying to help them find rest, a small detail that is missed out in the video is the fact that the zombies are humans that are still alive, and feel everything that happens to them unable to control themselves because of the headcrabs taking over there mind and body meaning any bad thing they do like killing and any feeling they feel like pain and suffering they still feel and do but have no control to avoid, and father Grigori knows that. He knows the horror of knowing that you are not in control of your body and need to do whatever the thing that took your head wants you to do. So when he kills them to free them he is really doing that. His faith growning stronger and stronger overtime is because of a lot of reasons, mainly the one in the video being about killing the people that are around him, imagine needing to kill the people that you used to help, see, talk with and go to church with just to end the suffering that they have no control of, and the other reason is the fact he is the only survivor left in Ravenholm after the Combine attack, and staying there for too long without anyone to talk with physically only leaves you to know the fact that no matter who and where you are God is always there with you and to help you in all the ways. Knowing this his faith must have only getting stronger and stronger knowing that at least what he is doing to help those we are lost and that he hopes he is doing a good thing for them. Father Grigori is one of the best video game characters ever made yet no one talks about for his small showing. I didn't try half-life yet even tho I basically know everything about it at this point but I did play Garry's mod, since it is a sandbox game that is made with the source engine it has most of the things in half-life, and one of the NPCs you can spawn that is in the animals section for some reason is you guessed it "Father Grigori" At that time I never knew who he was and didn't even know his backstory, and he always said his voice lines from time to time with a loud echo, I always hated that thinking it was another "Highly religious insane character in a videogame" And always thought he was annoying, but one day I saw a video in my UA-cam recommendations about his story and when I watched it I have only saw how I missed out on such a gold mine of a character and I hope one day he gets the recognition he deserves. Sadly the voice actor "Jim French" Has passed away in December 21st, 2017 (Rest in peace, Father) And it always makes me sad of the fact that we would never have the chance of seeing him again in any videogame at all or any story. Now yes the story of him in Half-Life 2: Episode Four is there altho not canon it does put more to him and give him an end but I don't think that gives him enough justice in any way. And I wanted to thank about this video, the editing, stories and overall everything was highly perfect, looking up for more content from you man.

Yeah whoever Jim French voices and roleplays will be a memorable character for sure. I know him because he voices Bill in Left 4 Dead which also you kill the mutants just like Half life. You will see the emotion and tension from Bill; especially in the DLC The Sacrifice when he talks to his partners and assures them after the events in the comics. You will not be disappointed.

This was a very interesting and well made video but I feel like you brushed over the medic's feats too quickly, so I just wanna emphasize that the Medic from TF2 has discovered temporary invincibility, obtained immortality (in theory), and literally tricked the devil himself. This utterly, clinically insane man is unironically one of the most intelligent and powerful beings in the TF2 universe, and I love him for it.

My main problem is with "insane" characters in games is that their mental issues aren't often explored beyond the catch all of "clinically insane". Like, does this character have an actual mental illness or is it just some undefined part of their character that makes them do strange things or cackle a lot

I'm of the opinion that, for a video essay covering the mentally unwell and how they're depicted in games, it surprisingly gets quite a bit wrong about mental illness.

One of the best videos I've watched in a while . You should 100% make a part 2 with some other video game characters.
