      I end up using another video for an detailed step by step guide as it was my first time.
      However my 1TB Aura Pro X2 PCI SSD just never showed in Disk Utility :(

    It would have been good to see the comparison times of your old hard drive boot up and loading times, compared to the new SSD.
    Ive seen so many of these videos and will probably watch a load more, before I go for a really big upgrade. Ram to 32gb, 2TB SSD, 512GB Nmve stick and i7 6700k processor.
    As you say, it will feel like a new computer and hopefully last for many years to come.

    I found another solution for a very fast MacOS for people who don’t want to open up there system or put the operating system on an external drive that I haven’t seen anyone ever mention. Just split the fusion drive in terminal and then put the MacOS on the SSD part of the fusion drive. Once you’ve done that don’t put any data on the HDD and just use an external drive like a Samsung T7. If your fusion drive has 128gb or 64gb. That should be enough to install your apps on and if you’re doing things like music production or video editing, just put everything on the external hard drive. It will actually be faster read/write than replacing the HDD with a sata SSD too. Just picked up this exact unit for $100 locally and put in 3rd party 64gb ram for $125 and it absolutely flies using this method. Hope that helps for the people not wanting to open up there iMacs.

    sounds familiar . . every time they update the OS it gets more and more bloated . . . and the Apple Store was ABSOLUTELY useless . . . first they told they COULD replace the drive (and they said they would be nice enough to KEEP the old drive . . I was like "yeah, I don't f'in think so) . . . then they tell me POLICY is "we don't replace hard drives unless it's a failed drive" . . . nice work, by the way . . looks like the process was a success . . nice job . . .curious, I may have missed it in the video, but why did you need to replace the "Thermal Sensor" ? . . is that something that gets destroyed in the process of removing the screen ?

    • @HaiTech
      @HaiTech  2 роки тому

      now that I think of it, I don't recall there being a thermal sensor on the original hard drive when i removed it. Yes I agree, i called around town to ask about replacing my hard drive and it was almost 1/4 of a new macbook. Yes my hard drive seem to have gotten slower as the years progress even though it's nowhere near full. I'm so glad I decided to replace the hard drive myself. I saved a ton of money

      @HaiTech  Місяць тому +1

      when my computer started to run very slow i upgraded the RAM first while still using the old fusion drive, that help a little bit. in real world usage i think the RAM allowed for me to have more programs open all at once. I didn't notice a huge jump in speed as far as opening up the program and boot up time. Once i replaced the HD to an SSD, that's when the computer felt brand new.

      @@HaiTech that is what I’ll be doing next I think, but at the moment it boots up, doesn’t seem slow and opens and closes files just fine… have you considered changing the CPU too? I’m running the i5 chip set, so to make it comparable to my M1 MBA I might 😊 Great video by the way 👍🏼

    Hi, thank you for creating this video I am about to do the same. The amount of times I took mine back to Apple because of how slow it was but it needs an ssd. The only thing I’m worried about is the screen, I’ve opened up a MacBook Pro before and changed the battery but never removed a screen.

    • @HaiTech
      @HaiTech  Рік тому

      the screen is tougher than it looks. the glass is actually sitting on a metal plate. with an SSD my computer feels brand new. don't take it to apple or a shop as they'll charge you half the price of buying a new computer. you can do it yourself. if you've taken apart a macbook pro then replacing the hard drive on your imac will be a peace of cake. a 2nd hand would help tremendously if you have the 27 inch model. i had to ask my wife to hold the screen while i detached the 2 cables. the way i look at it, if you replace it you'll save a ton of money. if you break it, you'll up for an upgrade anyway lol.

I was a little delayed in starting (because of life), but ended up tackling the project by myself a couple of Saturdays ago. It went well. I followed the tutorial and your instructions and everything works well. I even let it lie flat for a full week, for the screen to fully adhere, before standing it up. I still have the tape on mine too and will leave it for a few more weeks. (Thanks for the tip.) The only issue I had was restoring my back up from Time Machine. It is missing all of my backups from the past 8 months. Not sure how this happened because I backed up at least once a week during that time. Thankfully, I still have access to the old desktop HDD. I'm trying to figure out the most efficient and time effective way to update my new SSD with the previous content (including apps) short of just copying everything and reinstalling everything. yes you can. i was thinking of going that route, but it would require more work. the PCI express is under the motherboard and it's difficult to get to. i'm more than happy with my SSD and the speeds are like night and day compared to the old HDD. also the PCI express card was more expensive so i went with SSD instead lol

    Without the fusion drive set up it shows as 120gb disk.

      @@HaiTech thanks for the great walkthrough. I ordered a kit to replace the old fusion drive that failed with SSD. Like you, I don't want to mess with the NVMe drive behind the motherboard. I assume your SSD works fine without removing the NVMe? I also assume the operating system just gets installed directly to the new SSD as well?
