    So bc the hair doesn’t fall the same way each time we style, new “inequities” will appear each time when we style. It won’t look the way it did when it was styled and cut in the chair. Different pieces start hanging lower because the longer hairs get regrouped into different curl clumps every wash and style. You think you need another cut and they cycle continues. I’ve always felt that my ends never had that fresh haircut feeling and that detangling wasnt easier after the cut the way I’d hoped…you’re on to something for sure.

    It took me 1 curly cut in February to realize they weren’t for me. My next wash day after the cut/style I realized how ‘choppy’ and the huge difference in lengths. I had to pull out my shears and fix a ‘professional’ and overpriced cut.

    This is so true, I got my first tight curly cut in march and within the first week of detangling my hair, I was surprised to find that my hair was behaving like it was in need of a trim. It was due to exactly what you're describing. There was so much snagging and popping. There were a ton of little broken hairs all over my bathroom. Prior to my cut I was trimming myself and had grown my hair below boob length. I wasn't even in need of a trim when I got the cut. I just wanted a shape. I was afraid of losing length, but I just kept telling myself to look forward to having freshly cut ends after the cut. I just knew my hair growth would take off like a rocket afterward, Long story short, by the end of the first week I trimmed all of the stragly ends and I haven't had trouble detangling since. I will not be getting another curly cut. Im going to keep up my bang, because they're in my eyes now, but I will not be getting a full cut again. My hair has seemingly recovered from the inconsistent lengths and I am no longer experiencing breakage, but Im definitely side eying myself for making this choice.

    I got regular curly cuts for 3 years. I wash weekly, always use the same products, and never seemed to retain any length. I told my stylist that my goal was to grow my hair out, and she was cool with that. I know my hair; my hair grows because, genetics. I finally got fed up with this long taper that never seemed to grow, so I fired my stylist and started back doing my own hair. When I blew my hair out to trim it I couldn’t believe the splits. I have NEVER had splits like that in my LIFE. I used the previous shape as a sort of guide and did a good job. I haven’t seen this much hair growth in 3+ years. It’s not us, the consumer, it’s the curly cuts. I’ll probably never get another one again.

    You mentioned in one of your other live streams on this curly cut topic that you would shape the hair in its blown out state and then go in a refine the shape in its curly state to handle any unevenness due to differing shrinkage rates for those of us with several patterns. I believe this is the route I will take. Ive seen enough evidence from you rosie and shelly and my own limited experience to stop with curly cuts for trims before i must big chop again. Thank you so much for addressing this!

  • @jdbailey442
    @jdbailey442 Рік тому +4

    I started giving BGCs the sideeye when they said you don't need to blow out hair to trim it because their method would get all the splits and breakage. Aisha was insistent that you can see everything with the hair in its curly state. She is extremely nasty to people on their social media pages. My stylist cuts curly hair all day ro perfection and always blows hair out to ensure she can see what is going on with hair. She doesn't chop hair up and the shape is perfect when wash n gos or other styles. Even if i get a slik press it looks like beautiful layers. The co-owner of BGCs hair looks awful too. She tries to claim that its just that she just has coarse hair but it appears to be more going on than that.

    I’m so glad this is still a topic of discussion because people need to be made aware so they can make an informed decision. We are definitely on to something that many do not want exposed. However, I’m seeing the more and more we talk about it the more people are going and getting their ends assessed and floored at how bad they are after getting curly cuts! I’m also starting to question the extreme hooded dryer use and lack of leave-ins. My hair got so dried out from not using a leave in or periodically deep conditioning. This is all while using humectant based gels. So my new question is: Can the hair get damaged by chronically sitting underneath a hooded dryer if it’s not moisturized and dry as a desert??? I personally think in that scenario it quite possibly could. 🤷🏽‍♀️ Once again, awesome video and content. Thank you for continuing to speak on all of this! 💖💯

      I kept up my deep conditioning after getting curly cuts. I have been natural over 20 years so I already knew what my hair likes and can tolerate before getting curl cuts 3 years ago. The only advice I’ve taken from the curly cut folks is styling gels and using a diffuser instead of air drying. My sets lasted a week anyway before going to a curl artist. I think since I didn’t stop using my coconut oil, deep conditioner, and leave in, my hair didn’t get damaged.

    The expectation is that a curly cut would catch all the splits especially since BGC says all you need is a curly cut if you wear ya hair 85% curly of the time, and that it's possible to get "healthy hair" and length retention when you follow through with the program, nothing was lost in translation there, its all over their page
    As a consumer, I would expect my stylist to catch split's especially when im throwing all em dollars at her.....

    I got a curly cut for three years. I started it bc I was trying to cut out damage from a Dominican salon. It help see the damage and cut it out over time bc I couldn’t do a big chop. But I agree that the cut thins your hair out so bad and creates all the issues you mentioned. When I would blow it out once a year it seemed like my hair was growing but it was so thing at the bottom and poofy at the top (think mullet/emo hair). I ended up having to chop all my hair to below the chin to even it out and I still had parts that needed to grow out. I now warn everyone of you care about healthy hair run run away. Your hair might look like it’s growing but only the bottom layer is nothing else is if you want to maintain the shape.

    Curly cut is what made me find this channel and learn the RIGHT way to take care of natural hair.
    After a big chop, I had grown out my hair for over a year and a half. It was time for a trim, so I “trimmed” my hair curly, and it was even harder to care for after I did so. I had never seen so much breakage, and I felt so defeated. After learning so much from you and green beauty, this livestream serves as a full circle event for me, and it confirms exactly what I had been doing wrong for so many years.

      Not that genetics doesn’t play a part, but I would have to disagree. Because of my family, I thought this my whole entire life until I started getting serious about learning my natural hair. The 3 things that damaged my hair the most were 1) not knowing how to brush/detangle my hair, 2) letting it shrink on itself, and 3) cutting it curly

    i decided to watch this video too. I think the issue is tht the curly cuts aren't designed to address split ends, and are basically a "hairstyle" or a cut for asethethic reasons. Since ppl pay lots of $$ for them, they don't get them that often. And they believe that they're split ends are being taken care of since they are technically getting it "cut". So as a result, I think they are having the same issues anyone would if they didn't maintain their ends over a long time period - tangles, breakage, their styles not looking as good/even, etc. There seems to be an issue n disconnect between the stylists n the consumers n the service they think they are getting (a comprehensive hair cut, focusing on style n health) vs. the service they are actually getting (a cut designed to make the hair look good).

    • @AfrikanHairGod
      @AfrikanHairGod  Рік тому +3

      So I find that that is not the case. Many of the curly cut clients are EXTREMELY consistent often getting their hair cut at least 4x a year. They are more consistent than the average natural because they usually aren't even getting hair addition styles. While I don't think that curly cuts address damage specifically, with them cutting so frequently, one would expect that there would be very minimal damage. Many curly stylists have reinforced that their curly cuts do address so damage including split ends. You have to really listen to all the different perspectives from clients to stylists. It's a lot to take in but I've been doing my research on all of this for years

    at 22:27 , where you pointed out gel, I feel like the gels they use should be pretty moisturizing (most of the gels i see them promote have lots of humectants, with a smaller % of oils in the formulation). does leave in really make that much of a difference? (I prefer having a leave in myself, but I always assumed that they may have basically "replaced" leave ins for botanical gels so they can get moisture and product hold) 🤔

      Spritz has water and it's still one of the most drying and worst products for moisture. I agree with you but product formulations have so much depth to them.
