- AKA The Durango I didn't buy. Dodge's high-horsepower three row CUV is a special kind of crazy, but it's also a strangely good deal compared with full-size SUVs from Ford and GM, as long as you don't need to seat more than 6.

Considered the SRT. For $25K less I got a loaded AWD RT that looks almost exactly like this one. 6 seconds to 60, which is still very quick for a SUV, handles pretty well, and tows my travel trailer without issue. Really couldn't justify the $25K extra.
I have a 2019 SRT Durango and honestly the only thing to justify it, is saying you have a SRT lol
After months and months researching the X5, MDX, Q7, F-Pace and GLE, I came across this beast and pulled the trigger on the white with red interior. So far, the only disappointing thing is the gas mileage which I expected but 10.8 MPG is crazy.
really.. what's your driving condition?
Mixed and I keep it on economy most of the time on the highway. Hoping it will get better with time.
I... don't think it will lol.
Appreciate you keeping it real. I hear guys buying 10L V12's and say "Yeah, I get 32mpg" Kinda bs.
I'm waiting for Toyota to update the Sequoia and waiting, waiting, waiting....
Yuck
Very impressive vehicle. Love that its RWD based and a V8. Looks amazing inside as well. Definelty would be my choice
Its AWD.🙄🙉🙊🙈
Just drove my ordered 19 srt home. Looks awesome next to the hellcat
Y'all should of race. Lol to see if you was fastest or the hellcat was fastest! Lol!
I bet the owner of your local gas station sends you a Christmas card every year.
Best looking SUV on the road period.
Fun fact. Double tap the SRT hard button to enter Custom drive mode on the fly.
Didn't know that. Thanks for the tip!
Exactly, Thanks
Great review. I’m actually looking at one. The 2019 is totally the one to get. Didn’t know about the brake controller. But the 2019 also comes with bronze wheels as an option and upgraded stereo. Also you can get it to seat 7. Just option the middle row as a bench and there you go!!
Well-done review! This SUV beats the snot out of the competition hands down. Can't wait to get our new 2019 which is being built right now :-)
"SRT", all the way, baby. 6.4 Hemi, all wheel drive, abs, performance tires,.you got me SOLD$$$$
I test drove one this weekend and we absolutely fell in love with it. We are waiting for the 19 with the integrated brake controller. The wife is even willing to trade in her jk Rubicon lol. We drove the RT as well but found ourselves wanting more of the SRT fun. Our concern is reliability. The lifetime care Max is Not available on the SRT models 😞🙁☹️ if we go RT this might be the only reason
I have a Ram 3500 so I didn't need the towing package. I got it because it comes with a full sized spare tire. So, that also means the brake controller is not a deal breaker for me. That said, I can see why you'd wait. As for reliability, 17k miles in and nothing but oil changes so far. I have the mentality that every car will eventually have an issue here and there. Unless it's ALL THE TIME, I'm not too worried since that's what lemon laws are for.
10 years warranty does exist. It cost only 1700 dlls extra.
This car is way better than most SUV out there. The driving experience is very close to a German luxury SUV, with a properly tuned rear bias drivetrain, properly balanced drive. On top of that, they didn't skimp on the suspension as you will get Mercedes M class suspension (carried over from the Daimler-Chrysler days).
It is too bad that Dodge and many FCA brands in general don't carry reputations like other brands sold in USA. Because the Durango is a very good car.
James B
I have one and agree. Just wish I were back in Germany.....
Alex , how has your own personal Durango treated you ? I would be curious for long term . Can you do a 10k/20k mile review of your own vehicle ? Thanks for your time. Peacefrom510 .
Been hoping he would do one.
I'd love to know that as well. The reliability issue is my biggest concern with anything from FCA.
N Pooch from what I can tell, trans, engine are solid. There were several issues with the 8.4 inch Nav screen. But all were fixed in updates. Let’s see if Alex the master Guru responds .
bt4b4 hncles transmission failed at 10k had to get full replacement. Under warranty but it’s a joke.
3 years with 0 issues and I adore it and my children adore it more than me but I hate the rotary shifter and it’s a very long car but it’s narrow in the same time.
Wish we could get a one year review of the car. I can imagine the race rear back light is expensive to maintain.
Also would want to know if maintenance and repairs cost match with what they say it should too
Where is your front and rear seat review?? Do the rear seats recline? Are the front seats comfortable?? You totally skipped that part.
go watch like any of his other durango videos, not only did he review it but he also bought one and re-reviewed it
NOTE to ALL: FCA poor quality is a misnomer, and you do yourself a disservice. The truly bad Chrysler vehicles were all DESIGNED during the Benz era, and since there's a 3 to 5 year lag between design and production, you are looking at anything post 1998 but pre 2011 for the most part. I own two 2014 Ram Promasters, one with 410,000 miles and the other 380,000. Both have Pentastar 3.6 V6 engines, both have 6 speed autos that have been in production since 2003 or so. It's a minivan drivetrain, and it's pretty close to bulletproof.
This Durango has a PROVEN engine, and a PROVEN ZF 8 speed. The rest of the Durango has been in production for years and is generally reliable. Chryslers are also some of the cheapest vehicles to repair on the road. Parts are notably cheaper than Asian companies. Cat for a Promaster = $300. Cat for a Camry = $900.
I also own a 2015 Fiat 500 Abarth, which has been shockingly reliable. It's 1.4 turbo engine is also found in the Dart, 200, and Jeep Renegade.
So, you can just SAY that FCA vehicles are unreliable, just like you can SAY Fix It Again Tony, but it doesn't really mean much. Do some research and get back to me.
Kip Amore , clearly you don’t have FCA’s best combo of the features you highlighted in your vehicles, the grand Cherokee 2014 wk2. The transmission of my nearly 5 yr of ownership has seen in upwards of double digit recalls, the transmission (ZF 8 speed in the 3.6 pentastar) still clunks around in 1st to 3rd gears, the HVAC randomly blowing hot air when the air con is on (just because it can) spare part acquisition is ridiculous, and the reputation for customer disservice that FCA is renowned for has devalued my car horrendously, even though she’s only done 30000 km barely in that time. I have driven 200+km range in small Hyundai i20 and Mazda 2 because I feel they have less tendency to strand me in the middle of no where as opposed to this vehicle.
reyshiify You have a 5 year old car with only 18,600 miles? Are you driving it all off-road or something? Are your trans recalls all related to the rotary shifter that killed that actor kid?
I would agree that FCA dealer experience is awful. But the parts side is actually pretty good. I can’t argue about depreciation, although Jeeps are the exception, are they not?
Durango is based on an old benz platform before the divorce
Not quite. As I understand it, the Benz ML was based on the Durango/Grand Cherokee. This is what I'm bitching about; commenters are always saying the Charger/300/Challenger are just a 20 year old E-class. Not true anymore! The first ones had some E class parts, but those are long gone. It's been what...12 years since Benz's attempt to bankrupt Chrysler failed.
The current generation Durango/Grand Cherokee started 2011 and it is based on (related to) Mercedes Benz M-Class, not ML and not the other way around. The original 5-speed transmission was made by Mercedes (W5A580).
Alex, I believe you have done 3-4 reviews of the Durango with the V8 engine. Any plans or even thoughts on the most popular and most affordable version with the V6?
Do you have to pay more monthly insurance because of v8 Engine or it is the same price as the other suvs , I’m planning to get the RT by trading in my Highlander . Will it be good idea ?
How about the subaru ascent? It has longitudinal mounted engine with awd. Should it be classified as “suv” as well?
...good review. Very informative...
I'm still waiting for someone to post a long term review of this vehicle.
It's a Dodge, there is no such thing as "long term" with American car brands
Here's a quick one. I hit 1 year ownership next week. 17k miles in and have zero complaints. It has not had a single issue. It's strong, looks good, good space inside for road trips, USBs in the 2nd and 3rd row for the kids, MPGs are 17-18 on the HWY (eastbound in Kansas you could probably do 22 or more) and 15 in the city (10-12 if you keep your foot into it).
Motor Trend is just about to wrap-up a year with a Durango -- actually two Durangos, because their first one was stolen from a valet parking lot (so much for Dodge not being desirable). Most current update is linked below -- previous updates are linked at the bottom of that page:
www.motortrend.com/cars/dodge/durango/2018/2018-dodge-durango-4-rt-long-term-update-5-like-sisyphus/
EL OEL: That’s bull crap. I have a 2016 Durango R/T that will complete 3 years in Aug’19. Only issue had was one of turn indicator lights failing which got fixed at dealer for less than $20. The car has been rock solid, no rattles or lose parts whatsoever. I have driven so many cars during my business trips - no one comes close the fun that Durango R/T delivers.
Alex, I have a Citadel V8. I like how silent it is on the highway. Is the SRT exhaust really annoying on the highway? Also, is the R/T suspension really stiffer than the Citadel? I don’t like soft suspension of my Citadel, I prefer something like the 14 RX 350 F Sport. This is why I am looking at the R/T or SRT, to get stiffer suspension.
I know I'm talking about man no SUV will pull that much weight because why because I have to 4.7 Magnum V8 high output with the 45rfe transmission with the rear differential 392 are you going to come back another day.
Where’s the review of all the tech features it offered? How well does the adaptive cruise control work? Auto wipers and high beams???
ACC works well. I just don't get a chance to use it much. Lane departure takes some getting used to. When the lines of the road open up such as turn lanes left and right, you can feel the steering wheel tug a bit. Nothing too drastic though. Auto wipers are great although sometimes not sensitive enough. The auto highbeams are ok. I sometimes feel they don't turn off when they should. Sometimes, a car can be a mile ahead but it doesn't always sense it. I know that can be an issue for me if the tables are turned so I monitor that. It's very easy to just click them off when you want.
What's new for the 2020 Dodge Durango SRT version
So ridiculous but I love it. If we didn’t put so many miles on our cars (thus high gas $$$) I’d want something like this.
Your reviews are fantastic!
i have a question for dodge and Chrysler owner. Is dodge a lot reliable than Chrysler in general ? Is it a good idea to buy a used challenger ?
I bought a used 2014 charger se in December 2015 with 25k and put on 100k more in 2 years doing uber just oil, brake and tires i just sell it last february and now i have a 2016 Cadillac Escalade doing uber
When you purchase a new SRT, you get a track day at Bob Bondurant Race Driving School in Phoenix. When I did mine in June, I spoke with the mechanics down there (the ones that don't normally mingle with the "customers"). They have 40+ Hellcat Challengers and Chargers that they allow novice drivers to race around a track all day, in the heat, about 260 days out of the year. They very rarely experience any "failures". 99% of the work done to these cars are oil changes, brake work, and tire changes. I think that fact should be more advertised by Mopar than it is because that amazes me. These products are strong and if you take care of it, you won't have any issues with them.
What are transmissions and engine reliability like long term?
This Durango srt just came out on 2018 . But this a total new Durango .
Honestly, Durango’s can be driven until they have 200,000 miles on it & still run good, bought my 2015 dodge citadel with 87,000 miles on it, only had 2 problems with it since my 2 in a half years owning it & now has 116,000 miles on it & it still runs & sounds good, as long as you do the maintenance like you suppose to, they run forever.
This vehicle really is the only one of its kind.
But I don't understand one thing: How come all of a sudden VW Atlas simply just disappeared from all the 3 row midsize SUVs comparisons? Even in this video, when Alex is talking about the size of the vehicle, he completely just omitted the Atlas from the chart while still keeping the Santa Fe (which is much older vehicle and will be soon replaced by an all new Santa Fe XL) while knowing the fact Atlas is actually selling more than that Santa Fe. How come? No one noticed that?
You never disappoint me with the song selections chosen for each review. Lol
glad someone else noticed this as well!! He sure does put some effort
What does music gotta do with the video if the cars he puts on here? That's what I'm not getting!?
The song titles...read them :-)
Hay friend, I can't find out if that 6.4 Durango is super charged or turbo from factory. You didn't mention i believe.
Its naturally aspirated
You gave fuel economy a C but never mentioned the average MPG you got. The screen showed 11.0 mpg early in the vid, but what was the actual average mpg in your testing?
That's what I've gotten in the past 2 weeks of ownership.
@@Gladiator1972 is it worth it? I'm on the fence with the Durango SRT , Charger SRT or a used Charger hellcat!
I personally love it, it's almost too much performance, I would have been happy with the Durango R/T. I mean all that power will get me in trouble with the cops because it's so easy to go fast, especially on the highway.
He's doing a review which no doubt has some full throttle moments. I am currently sitting at 16.2 mpg in mixed driving with the occasional full throttle.
At this point, I'd be happy with 16 MPG.
Alex, I still enjoy you and I like the reviews but the mid video ads are really irritating. However, I suppose if you increased to 4-5 jarring mid video reviews you may be able to trade in for the SRT even sooner. :)
good job Alex allot good infos subbed!
i like it to be more aggressive looking....
Are the front seats still as hard as a park bench?
No, they're as hard as my.....(never mind...lol).
My only suggestion for Alex is to try to include an observed highway fuel economy number. That's the only number that really matters. The actual city number doesn't matter because even though the number is low, you don't drive that many miles. The number we want is highway, level ground, summertime, 70mph. That number allows us to compare one vehicle to another, and it's the important number to know if you rack a lot of miles and buy a lot of fuel. In many cities, I could spend 8 hours a day in the car but only go 30 miles total, so who gives a crap if it only gets 10mpg...I only went 30 miles. But if I'm clocking more than 100 miles a day, it's gotta involve a highway, so then I actually care.
Go by the EPA figures?
Dungeon Master EPA is fairly accurate and I can find it myself, but that info would be useful in a video review. You’ll note with this SRT Durango review, we hear about cylinder deactivation, we hear about the 8 speed, but the info I want is “what does it get on the highway?”. That info is absent.
Welp, the EPA gives you a fairly realistic highway estimate.
As to why it's not mentioned in the review? Probably the same reason crash safety isn't mentioned? It's easily checked on the IIHS website and including it into the video would be excessive? Perhaps Alex didn't have the time to do such tests? And if he did, there'd likely still be someone mad about the methodology?
Dungeon Master point taken. But I went ahead and looked it up. Epa is 19 on premium. Fine, though I can almost guarantee you’d get more than that. Why? Because the challenger with the same drivetrain gets 25 EPA. If I recall, Alex in his own video on the challenger srt claimed 29 or 30. And that car didnt have cylinder decativation, I think.
You’d be inclined to say “yeah well, the durango is heavier than the challenger”. Yeah, but that doesnt matter much on level ground. Aero doesnt account for 6mpg.
I’m guessing, but I’d bet one of my nuts that if you set the cruise at 65 and drove around kansas, that thing would get mid 20s. But I don’t KNOW that, because none of the online reviewers can be bothered to do anything but parrot what’s on the window sticker.
I get 16 in mixed driving and have seen over 20 on highway cruising at 80 mph. I've also seen 10 when I can't keep my foot out of it.
And why why why does the Durango have such dull interiors except for the Citadel?
The front looks like it came from the charger scatpack
How does this compare to the R/T?
this is better, but more expensive. R/T is cheaper, but less power, not as much fun, still very good
I test drove an R/T before it was announced they would make the SRT version. I came away from that test drive thinking it was a great vehicle but I wanted more performance. The 360 hp Hemi in the R/T just wasn't going to cut it. I even told the salesman "if they could just make a higher hp version, I'd buy it". Low and behold, they did, and I got it. Zero regrets. If class leading power/performance isn't a necessity for you, the R/T is still a great vehicle especially at the year end price deals you can find.
Most awesome (and self aware) automotive assessment Ive ever heard here on youtube - If more of you clicked the susbscribe button below I could afford this (which is what I really want)! That my friends is "keeping it real". And more importantly, I think Alex (and maybe saabkyle... maybe) is the only car reviewer who could say that sincerely and not have one person instantly hate him for saying it because his reviews actually appear professional (like its a real job) and not just some person with a camera, spare time and a general like of automobiles. Great channel; keep up the good work and I hope you get more subscribers and your SRT.
A crossover is just a car based SUV. Nothing more. That's the way it always was. It has nothing to due with truck based characteristics, and it never did. Because it was a crossover between a car and an SUV not between a truck and car. It's SUVs that have truck based characteristics, not crossovers. Plus the engines are from cars, not trucks. The hemi it uses is the found in the charger and challenger.
Faster than the Jeep trackhawk?
Not even close.
Your an idiot !!!
No, but the trackhawk is not a 3-row SUV, IT S NLY 2-row.
A few things,
Any of these vehicles today, how much of this tech do owners actually use?
Do you play with it every day? Find what you like and never touch it again?
Leave it in stock mode because you never read the owners manual and have no interest in the tech?
How many waste gas on a daily basis by using launch control at every light and how long willl that last?
Of SRT buyers how many will actually go to the track to use the track functions? 5% maybe? Think more like 1-3% at most.
For 2019 you can get the SRT front end on lesser models and engines so you won’t be so special anymore if you spent all that money on a true SRT.
Buy a 5.7l with the SRT nose, get a stand alone tune, over drive pulleys, maybe cams and the brake kit from a hellcat and pocket $15k.
I use everything in my 2015 genesis sedan. This has less tech than that and I would use it all too. The auto wipers and high beams are awesome. Just wish this had the hud like my genesis.
I will attempt to answer your questions. I use the "tech" every day. I use the Apple Carplay, the SRT driving modes, the auto wipers, the lane departure, the xm traffic, nav system, etc. For example, I used the nav system to find a restaurant the other day. I simply said "find nearest _____". It found it in about 3 secs and provided me all the information you could ever want to include the phone number. I then called that number and made a reservation. All of this was hands free and accomplished in less than a minute (including the phone call). As for the SRT driving modes, they are very distinct modes from each other. If you put the vehicle into "track mode", the steering is EXTREMELY tight. The suspension is kidney rupturing. It is not a soft riding machine anymore. You will feel every pebble. It also speeds up the shifting. So I use it a few times a week when I decide to get a little spirited in my driving. The Hemi "brapppp" is much more noticeable in track mode too.I have 17k miles on mine and have used "launch mode" three times. It's nearly as fast without it. The AWD launch is amazing with or without it. I average 16 mpg in mixed driving with the occasional full throttle fun. You can get the SRT front end on the 2018s as well. Kind of made me mad they allowed that.If you bought the 5.7 with an SRT nose, a tune, pulleys and a cam, you will definitely pocket about $12k ($52k compared to $64k). But you're not going to be anywhere close to the same performance of the SRT to include the suspension. And, you'll miss out on many other nice attributes like the stitched leather dash, suede headliner, laguna leather seats and all the driving modes.Hope this helps.
Rear end still looks like a minivan.
I know . it does a little bit!! But with the break lights you can tell a difference. Well I can at least lol!
8:04-8:20 psh psych😅
What does SRT stand for?
Elvis Santos street racing technology
Street and Racing Technologies.
, 392cid, ohv,Naturally Aspirated, AWD,MOONROOF. I'll do the rest. I'll take it 🎯I'll do the WIDE BODY.
If THAT is a 'crossover', so is the Range Rover, RR Sport, and Discovery5. They are just not. None of them. A crossover is a car-derived vehicle whether in body or mechanically , whether two or four wheel drive. Something like a Nissan Qashqai/Rogue Sport or Honda CR-V
Every brand has their fans but I don't get why anyone would buy anything from FCA. Their reliability rating speaks for itself.
the same goes to every other brand
I've owned a LOT of cars over the course of 40 years. Can't say one brand was any worse than another. I've had a Honda which blew a head gasket, and I had a Toyota truck that gave me no end of engine trouble. I currently own two Dodges, and the two issues have been electrical (PCM covered under warranty, and wheel speed sensors which got immersed).
to me this is a tahoe/ suburban....forget the frame.......That to me has nothing to do with what your calling it.....these trucks...are always better with a full frame....Chrysler cheaped out is all
Dodge Durango it's not a mid-size it's a full size
I certainly wouldn't call it a full size (although it beats many of the full sized competitors in many categories). I also wouldn't call it a mid size. It's somewhere in between. If you compare it to the true full sized options, it's the smallest. Compare it to the mid sized ones and it's the biggest. It's truly unique and sits right in the middle. I presume that's the reason FCA hasn't been in the full size class for awhile.
No it is a full size because I have some full size Capri Billy's and it will do the full size man I haven't 2001 Dodge Durango full-size SUV because I know it is
The full size SUVs are the Dodge Durango the Toyota Sequoia the Nissan Armada and the Ford Expedition on a Chevy Tahoe with a Chevy Suburban all those are full size SUVs can you call Forsyth CCB is sport utility vehicle crossovers are not or utility there are crossovers their car like man I know what the heck I'm talking about I'm a mechanic for 20 years I know what the heck I'm talking about
Your 2001 was body on frame construction. That in and of itself doesn't mean it is or isn't full size. But it did ride more like a truck as it was on the Dakota chassis. The newer Durangos are on a Mercedes Benz chassis. These are crossovers by definition (unibody). There are no unibody full sized SUVs out there. Again, it's in between sizes. If you're going strictly by length, the 4runner is 190ish inches. The explorer is 198 inches. The Armada is 208 inches. The Tahoe is 204 inches. The Expedition is 210 inches. Where's the Durango? 201 inches. It bridges the gap. If you want to draw the line at 200 inches and call it a full sized, go for it. But then the unibody aspect makes it unique in the full size market. Semantics. Call it what you like.
The Dodge Durango it as a full-size SUV man because my Durango pull up to 10,000 and 700 pounds more than a midsize or full-size cuz I have a package
Para mi es una porqueria con muncho poder
What about a lambo urus that would smoke this car
It's not a 3-row
@@AAutoBuyersGuide model x
Not 3 rows first of all. But I could buy 4-5 of these for the same price.
It's a Lamborghini, it costs what? $200k? $250k? And it's a small crossover. These two vehicles would never be cross shopped.
A Dodge lollll
It’s a Dodge; no thanks.
SUV, CUV, whatever they are called they are just basically station wagons and boring.
Drive one before you say this. When I bought mine, it comes with a driving day at Bob Bondurant Race Driving School. I drove someone else's SRT Durango down there on a road course and I can attest, it's no station wagon and far from boring. It's no road course drivers car, but the first time you take it into a 270 degree increasing radius turn at 90 mph and it grips and then you feel the power pull you out, you'll realize this is no ordinary SUV.
5.4L & 6.4L! This kind of displacement is completely out of my thought process in this time and age unless it's a commercial truck. With today's gas prices, a huge barge like this one is more a luxury, comparable to super cars. Only in this case, it drives like a truck. With the Durango completely lack of any luxuries on the interior and bad cash test ( www.iihs.org/iihs/ratings/vehicle/v/dodge/durango-4-door-suv ), there are options out there that can make motoring fun if we put together a right combination.
I won't argue your comments about the displacement being out of your thought process in this time and age. To each, their own. But this vehicle does not, in any way, shape or form, drive like a truck. I've driven it around a road course before (in triple digit speeds) and while it's no track star, it can hold it's own. Watch some videos or racers test driving it around Indy last year and making comments about it if you want to know how capable it is as a performance vehicle. But my biggest argument against your comments are in regards to "lack of luxuries". Find me another vehicle that has stitched leather dash, full laguna leather interior, the best infotainment center in the industry, and a suede headliner for under $70k. Then add the performance capabilities and the functionality of towing more than most full sized SUVs AND a third row. I've done the research. There isn't one. The closest you'll get is a $130k Benz.
Perfect example of American excess! Buyers of these vehicles are keeping fuel prices high. Totally useless.
oh yeah, that is only the reason why prices are high!
Drive one before you make ignorant comments.
