Photographing the Milky Way over Mono Lake

- In this week's video, we share our experiences while photographing the Milky Way over Mono Lake at Lee Vining, California. We captured the images in late April when the Milky Way is fairly horizontal as it rises in the southeast during the early morning hours. Initially, we had a little bit of moonlight (before the Milky Way rises) and then we use some panel lights to light the tufa after the moon sets.
We also highlight our boondocking location on the north shore of the lake.

Fantastic! Always great to get a notification of a new video...always a great adventure to be had! What a fantastic area and something you certainly don't see every day...sorry about the Canada Geese :-) Such great captures of the Milky Way! Thanks for losing some sleep to share and hope you slept in a little and are looking forward to a wonderful week!
Thank you for the lovely comment. The west side of Sierras is a favorite area for us. Mono lake is only one of a number of locations that we like visit periodically. Again, thank you for watching and commenting. It is greatly appreciated.
Thank you Shawn and Corinne! Another excellent video, very informative. Love your detailed tips and tricks of how to get a best milky way shot. Love your final milky way photos, it is absolutely gorgeous! I am looking forward to travel and photograph this place.
Thank you Mary. We are delighted that you enjoyed the video and photographs. It’s a wonderful location. We think you will really enjoy it.

Thank you Tony. We appreciate the support.
Lovely pics and thanks for the tour of Mono ... been by but never stopped ... next time :)
Thank you Colin. I am glad you enjoyed the photographs.
Fascinating insight into the Tufas and a great spot to shoot the Milky Way. I’ve never attempted this Astro photography and it was great to see your final images which looked stunning ! I think the landscape you chose really suited the images and the light painting brought out and highlighted those foreground tufas. Well done Shawn and Corinne on a great film and look forward to seeing your next adventure
Thank you for the continued support. Finding a spot that could be used emphasize the Tufa was challenging. We looked at a number of spots. There are much better representation of the tufa but we just could make the sky work. Thanks watching we are glad you enjoyed the Milky Way shots.
Shawn and Corinne, stunning Milky Way and astrophotography. I would gladly have a bluebird sky in exchange for the ability to photograph the night sky. Shelley says the tufas are cool, and you guys did an excellent job explaining how they are formed. Thank you for sharing, and we look forward to seeing your next video.
Hi Craig and Shelley. I am glad you enjoyed the video. The Tufas are really cool. The south west side of the lake has a better representation of the tufa but was oriented poorly for the Milky Way photography. Craig, did you notice the “noise” in the videos. That is what I was talking about with the cellphone. It’s really hard to get out of the sound mix.
@@TravelsofRedRover, does it still do it when the phone is in airplane mode?
Yep, if I put in airplane mode, turn off Bluetooth and wifi that stops the issue. Then it is a issue of remembering to do that or, as we often do now leave the phones behind.
