    I am getting on a bit and I remember sailing before GPS. There was a coastal system from Decca with direction finding, about as much use as an ashtray on a motorbike. Put headphones on and waft a gun thing towards a beacon then angle from another one.Then the gods shone on us and we had GPS for a few hours day but had to put the GPS position to a paper chart. I sailed a Contessa 26 from the Solent UK to the med using that method. I swallowed more salt water than coffee on that trip, wet little boats, but I loved her. At seventy I have yet to cross an ocean but am hoping to do the ARC next year on a drier more comfortable yachts. You guys are an inspiration, I wish we had youtube 40 years ago when I was your age. Beats the hell out of nine to five.😃

      There we go! We don’t like to believe the worst but we’re cautious. sometimes there is some truth to the stories and Venezuela is obviously going through troubling times, and being only 12nm apart from Trinidad it’s easy to see that Trinidad could be affected. But we’ve met a lot of people who rule out travel to Trinidad because of a potential piracy issue and it seems to be a lot of hype over one or two bad reports, years apart.

      @@SailingMillennialFalcon my folks lived in Trinidad for 5 years, and I have both visited and worked with clients there 19 years ago. I never felt unsafe, the people are amazing and welcoming, and it wasn't touristy - my favourite island. There are definite areas where you should not visit.
      On the north end of the island, there is an amazing little "resort" that protects sea turtles, and you can spend the night in the cabins that are tree houses. Don't forget to have a bake and shark at Richard's at Maracas Beach. And my personal favourite, Don's Roti Shop in Petit valley ... not that you'll likely end up there. Stop for Doubles I'm the morning roadside.

    Re: pirates; one tactic I heard of is to drag a floating line behind your boat. If there aren’t any pirates, you’ve harmed nothing. But if there are nefarious folks out there, a good chance you’ll tangle your drag line in their prop…causing all sorts of mayhem. Don’t know if it works or not. And I would suppose it would only work on boats coming up astern…not someone who comes to board a breast.

    New wind genny? Make? Like? Does it play well with the new house bank? My old KISS is still plugging along but might upgrade. If I recall you also had a KISS. Was the change to this new one worth it for you?

    • @SailingMillennialFalcon
      @SailingMillennialFalcon  2 роки тому +1

      Actually we’ve had this ‘new’ wind genny for 2 years now!
      It’s a silent wind, it is indeed quieter also! The bearings on the KISS had worn out and it’s not really built for dismantling which is why we got the Silent wind. If you have a Kiss already its not really worth changing - yes it’s a bit louder but the output is similar. But if you’re looking for a new one then I’ll thumbs up the silent wind.

    • @scubaseas1

      @@SailingMillennialFalcon Thanks. The Kiss is 4 screws and some silicone sealant to swap out the 203ff bearings. 50+ years as a master mechanic makes the process easier I suppose. Best yacht vs. Pirate story ive head was when 2 sailboats were under way. Pirate skiff shows up, unloads a hellstorm on the fiberglass yacht in front. His mate in the big steel hull yacht behind, made a quick decision and steered directly at the pirate skiff at full steam.... they tried to shoot it.. nope 7.62 rounds bounced straight off her bow, he then T-boned the pirate skiff and sunk it!

    Hi there. When do you prefer hydrovane over autopilot? Any advantages-disadvantages or when to use which?

    • @jpdj2715
      @jpdj2715 2 роки тому +2

      You're not asking me, but. In my opinion, sailors doing what SMF do, need both, to begin with. An electronically controlled system relies on a chain of components that can each fail, and then the hydrovane is an excellent backup (that also could fail). A couple decades ago, a solo race sailor I know, had his hydrovane break on him and he needed to stay awake for several days to get to inhabited places. That staying awake almost killed him and made him temporarily, sort-of, insane. In this sense, proper sleep is more important than drinking water, almost.
      The autopilot will stay the course you set, but does not take into account changing wind directions and that can become a problem if nobody is on watch. The solo sailor I referenced had a network of computers on board to run AI that could deal with all this, but he needed to transfer the system's directions manually as this was a single-handed race that only allowed hydrovane and other things needed to be manual as "hand" implies. So, it is possible to have a yacht with an autopilot that adjusts the sails automatically, based on sensors, AI, and learning, but not in the SMF price range. By far.
      The hydrovane maintains course relative to wind direction and hence has the problem of changing wind direction (that requires different settings to the sails) to less extent. But changing wind directions can throw you off course.

    • @SailingMillennialFalcon
      @SailingMillennialFalcon  2 роки тому +1

      What @JPdJ just said is definitely correct and something we experienced a bit on our Atlantic crossing when we encountered light winds and the wind was from behind (not as much apparently wind)
      So instead of fancy AI to get us back on track, we actually used both Auto and Hydrovane together so the Autopilot was being used less (therefore less power draw) and would only kick in when the Hydrovane didn’t have enough wind and started to steer a bit off course.
      But mostly, the Hydrovane is good for a) redundancy - another way to self steer the boat should the autopilot break b) no power draw which on a few days passage makes a BIG difference as the autopilot uses quite a bit. c) backup rudder should somehow, someway our rudder gets damaged.

    The oil rigs brought back this old story.
    THE LIGHTHOUSE AND THE SHIP
    A battle ship was on exercise at sea in bad weather. The captain was on the bridge. It was foggy. Just after dark the look out spotted a light on the starboard side. The captain asked if it was steady or moving. The look out replied the light was steady meaning they were on direct collision course with that ship! The captain ordered the lookout signal to the other ship:
    “Change course 20 degrees. We are on collision course.”
    The signal came back ‘”Advisable for you to change course.”
    The captain signalled ‘”I am a captain. Change course 20 degrees.”
    “I am a seaman second class. You had better change course 20 degrees” came the reply.
    The captain was furious. He sent back ‘”I am a battleship. Change course!”
    Back came the signal, “I am a lighthouse. Your call.”
