Dans ce texte, on retrouve le thème très important pour J. Brel de l'amitié (voir aussi Jojo ou Voir un ami pleurer). On retrouve aussi son anticléricalisme et son opposition à la guerre qui, si ce n'est pas nécessairement sa finalité, a pour conséquence la mort d'êtres humains et la douleur de ceux qui les ont aimés.

C’est vrai. Chanson triste mais belle … belle parce que triste ? Chez Brel, même dans ses chansons “comiques”, on retrouve souvent un arrière plan mélancolique. Et puis, perdre une ami est toujours triste !
Can anyone answer this question? in another Brel song: Quand maman reviendra, Brel speaks about his family, his mother father, sister and brother. When he speaks about his brother his voice cracks up a bit and says quans reviendra il Fernand... Does this mean that Fernand was his brother? Merci
I don't think so. Actually, Jacques Brel had an older brother called Pierre but no sister and I don't think this song talk about his own family. Moreover, it's not obvious to imagine Brel's mother leaving to meet her lovers ... but sometime, secrets are well hidden in these catholic and bourgeois families! In my opinion, the song is led by the side misogynist and anti-bourgeois of Brel. There is not much information about Pierre, except he was an enthusiast of travels and of motorbike ... and the father of Bruno Brel, an other Belgian singer (have a look on this channel).
Of course if someone has some other interpretation, it will be welcome.
