I hadn't realized the 2013 4Runner I just bought had an AUX jack. I was going to buy speakers for it. Thank you for pointing it out in this video. I've been driving a 20+ year old car. Going with FT-857D, and ATAS-120 on top middle of the 4Runner, but using a fold down mount on the roof rack braces. More for stationary, but the places I can go....ha ! Hope to see you on FT8, POTA, SSB Thanks again! -Glenn

I also have a 2015 Nissan titan and this gave me a lot of ideas! Would love to see how you ran your coax for the ATAS though.

Yet to come is a dedicated laptop with cables and a digirig or signalink to run digital modes.

Did you plug the external speaker jack on the radio directly into the aux port on the truck stereo? Did you use a mono to stereo adapter? Seems like I tried that with an Icom 706 years ago in my 2011 Ram and something didn't work right. Can't remember exactly what the problem was.

Hows the set up working? I'm looking at the ATAS since it's cheaper than the Tarheel screwdriver

Get the Tarheel or a Hi-Q or Scorpion antenna. Either of those will out perform the ATAS substantially. I ran a Hi-Q 5/160 on my Ram and it performed fabulously. I had an ATAS and it was quite disappointing in performance. Good luck!

Thanks for the info! Have you considered adding an auxiliary battery and installing an isolator? It's been a life saver more than once in my overlanding rig...

I have indeed. The setup is a work in progress. In fact I've already investigated where I could put it. One option is two smaller batteries turned sideways in the factory battery box.

atas-120, FT-891, FTM-300, for the grounding strap. I had a bunch of water lines that had a stainless sheath around it. (like for connecting a toilet or a dishwasher) pull the rubber house out and put some lugs on the end. way cheaper option.

    Grounding, grounding, grounding.

Hams often underestimate the need for bonding in mobile setups. If your multimeter doesn't show continuity between every vehicle surface then you're already compromised. And that's just electrical ground. RF ground is a whole other monster.

It’s an ATAS 120 by Yaesu. It’s specifically designed for use with their radios.
