Definitely love the need to manually do a map, feels so authentic, like back in my Amiga Dungeon Master and Eye of the Beholder days! I know to the modern gamer, that will feel so wrong and old fashioned, but for me, I really enjoy the whole experience outside of the game as you play. I was a big pen & paper RPG'er back in the day, so drawing a map was a given, being able to do one from playing a game was like nothing before! Lapped it up! I love it when even now, a game comes along that taps into that nostalgia in a good way, the 1bit character graphics also add way more atmosphere than any modern gamer will understand. Loved your mini-series, thanks for covering this game.
Yes! It's like Wizardry for me haha I keep a map in this and it's great! It's nice that they are regular grids, too!
To be fair, the second part of my advice regarding resting in the dungeon was that if you were surprised, flee and rest again, because I haven't yet hit a battle in this game I couldn't flee out of before it begins. To my knowledge, anyway. In the beginning, I was fleeing a lot. lol But yeah, this game will punish you for biting off more than you can chew.
Another thing about resting in the dungeon, there seems to be some kind of exposure mechanic to random encounters when resting. Meaning that you are far more likely to have a random encounter resting in a place where your party is contacting a single wall or door, or in the middle of a room or intersection, with three or four open squares around them, as opposed to having three points of contact with walls or doors and only one square of open space in contact with their square. So resting at the end of a dead end hallway, or in a hallway ending in a door while against the door, or in a single square room will result in far less encounters. But either way, feel free to immediately flee if someone happens upon you while resting.
In any event, sorry about the losses on this go. But hey, you're making progress on the map, and you got some decent replacements that are leveling some nice skills quickly, so there's that! lol Enjoy your day, Doc.
Haha, yes! I forgot to run. It's cool that you can just run no problem and reset and I was being stubborn for sure. Thanks for your tips and for explaining about the exposure system--that makes sense! I will try and rest in a corner haha ;D Yeah, I just have to stop feeling bad about death as it's part of the game and we are getting stronger ^_^
