Door height adjustment. IG doors, Truedoor. Cant find the height screw?

  • Please read this description as I’ll probably note things here that may help you that aren’t shown in the video. I have a Truedor (only one ‘o’) front door from IG Doors and it’s fitted with what I think might be Trojan 3D hinges. The hinges are, in my opinion, about the worst hinges I’ve ever come across. Maybe somebody loves them but I don’t. There is no provision for height adjustment only height locking!! In this video I show how the adjustments work but unfortunately there is no fine screw adjustment to raise or lower the door, instead you have to manually lift the door yourself, and again, unfortunately the locking bolt that serves to lock the hight position is the same locking bolt that locks the sideways position of the door. In other words, you have to adjust two dimensions simultaneously. You’ll see in the video that there is a sprung steel cover on the back of the hinge that has to be removed to access the locking bolt. When adjusting the height of the door the locking bolt of every hinge has to be slackened to allow the door to be raised or lowered. Remember you have to lift the door yourself; the screw doesn’t do that for you, it only locks the position once you have set it! I raised the door with a bolster chisel and block of wood and then I jammed three thin bladed paint scrapers under the door, one on top of the other to hold the door at the desired heigh. The 6mm hexagon headed shaft can be accessed from above or below, you could be forgiven for thinking that they are two different adjustments like other hinges but they are both on the end of one common shaft. Adjusting the backwards and forwards position of the door is reasonably obvious but the height adjustment seems to have a lot of folks flummoxed and I must admit I had to have a hinge in my hand to work out exactly how it worked. When you adjust the side-to-side position of the door the central socket screw has to be undone enough to allow the moveable part of the mechanism to ‘click’ past the grooves and peaks of the indentations on the fixed part of the hinge. Anyway, I hope that helps someone. Kind Regards . . . Andy

Fantastic video! My grandparents asked me to look at their front door as it had dropped over the years meaning they struggled to open and shut it. After a good hour of struggling to find a way to adjust the height, I stumbled across this video which had all the answers. Needless to say they were over the moon. Thank you!

Hi there, thanks for the feedback. Sometimes when I make a video like this I think to my self, 'Am I wasting my time, will it actually help anyone???' So its great to be getting so many folks coming back to me to say thank you and letting me know how they got on. I figure there are probably a lot of folks who get the help but never comment. Let me know how it goes. Just out of interest, I wonder what part of the world you are in??

Our garage side door had become misaligned, wouldn't lock and I couldn't see how to adjust it until I found your video. A few minutes work and it now locks. The installer hadn't tightened the lowest hinge locking screw and this was probably the root cause of problem.
An additional benefit is that I now know the hinge type if I need to replace a hinge. Many thanks for posting a great video.

One thing I will add is, after adjusting the door, if the locking latches don’t locate or are tight, you can correct them by adjusting the Allen screws in the doorframe.

Hi, if you look at the comments below you'll see that there seems to be quite a few fitters/installers who have struggled to work out how to adjust these hinges. I think it's a bit like designing a bicycle that only turns left, and if you want to go right you have to get off it manually and point it in the direction that you want to go.

Unfortunately my old ICOM power amplifier has died and I've been unable to fix it. I took it to an ICOM specialist and he couldn't fix it, which in a way made me feel a bit better, (I figure, if the specialist couldn't fix it it had to be bad) When I had the amplifier I could guarantee been called back when entering a pileup but without it I barely get a look in. @AndyDaviesByTheSea  Рік тому +1

Hi you probably have 3 hinges on the door. It might help you to find out what's happening if you take one of the hinges off the door. I'd remove say the middle hinge (first making sure that the top and bottom hinges are secure) once you have the hinge in your hand, you'll be able to play with it and really get to understand how it functions. (that's what I did to work out what was going wrong)
refit the middle hinge and remove the top hinge and check that out, once you happy that it all functions correctly refit the top hinge and repeated the process with the bottom hinge. then you will know that each hinge works the same as all of the others. You should now have a total understanding of the hinges. if you can’t lift the door (with the appropriate screws loosened off then it could well be that when the hinges were originally fitted, they were badly fitted. for example, imagine the top hinge was fitted such that the bottom hinge was at the lower end of its travel adjustment and the top hinge was fitted at the top of its travel adjustment, then this means you can't move the door up or down because one or the other hinge has run out of travel. It could of course be any combination of hinges that are stopping you from moving up or down. You will have to work out witch are the worst offenders. Again remove any one hinge and try to reset the door. If removing one hinge doesn't solve the problem replace it and remove another, and you should be OK. Once you work out which hinge is causing the problem you will have to refit that hinge either in a lower or higher position to match the others.
      Good luck . . . Andy

@AndyDaviesByTheSea. Thank you so much for this video! Hope you can answer a question sir. I only have to adjust the left to right fit on my front door as the height is O.K. So, can I loosen the 4mm. Allen screw just enough to turn the "cam" hinge pin without affecting the height/top to bottom set of the door? Thanks again. You and yours stay safe and well.

Hi yes to move the door left or right, that is either closer to the lock or away from the lock, you have to undo the hexagon socket screw and then use a 6mm socket to twist the central shaft that runs down the hinge, what you might call the ‘hinge pin’.
Watch the video again, start at one minute forty-four seconds and watch until three minutes twenty-five seconds, that covers what you want. Good luck, let me know how you get on.
      All the best . . . Andy

Great video, our door is a really tight fit and have had to adjust the side movement several times. When the door gets sun on it, it becomes a lot tighter in the frame so I have to make slight adjustments. I've just ordered another hinge because I broke the locking screw. So I wanted to ask if you know of any other hinges that will fit as a replacement to these that have a separate height adjuster? Thanks

Hi, no I can't help you with an alternative. What I have found is that once I made the adjustment I anticipate that it should stay good. The rest of the hinge seems to be fit for purpose for a good few years, so I wouldn't worry about it too much, but if you search for something like "door doctor" or "replacement door hinges" on the internet, I'm sure that you'll find something suitable. Just make sure you take all of the measurements of the damaged hinge so you know what to buy. Regards . . . Andy

down 1 or 3 of the Allen key are tight.. 😂

Hi Ben I hope that you are able to free up the tight fixings. Just a dab, (not a spray) of WD40 on the top of the screws can help. Don't soak the whole thing. Leave it to soak into the threads and reapply a couple of times. Use new, good clean sharply shaped Allen keys, not old worn-out keys with rounded edges. If it's still tight try hitting the bottom of the socket screw with a steel punch. If you don't have a small enough punch to fit in the socket screw hole try cutting up an old Allen key (of the correct size) and use that as a punch to shock the screw. Don't try hitting the bent end of the key, you want a strait line bang down the thread. (i.e. some times banging the end of a stuck bolt down into the thread brakes to bond) if it's still stuck try more WD40, let it soak for an hour or more and hit it again. What ever you do don't use worn out socket keys as once you wreck the head of the screw you've dad it!!
If you are really stuck, take the hinges off one at a time and work on them in a vice. (assuming there are 3 hinges, you can do that without issue)
      Good luck. . . . Andy

And here I am with the old fashioned method of fill in the holes and chisel out the hinge recess on one side, then refit, or turn the hinge over to get the unworn side. Ah well, still good hinges if the wear after 60 years is under 1mm, for a door used 100 plus times a day minimum.

Hi there. Well there's nothing wrong with good old-fashioned technology. But you know how it is these days, they want to make everything complicated, in the case of theses hinges they only got it partially right.

These hinges suck and any company that uses it deserve just a single star and a bad review.. That being said, I adjusted the door like so:
I ordered air wedges of Amazon to be able to do this without back pain. The air wedges cause too much friction to be able to move the door to the left or right. So I followed these steps roughly:
    1. Note the adjustments needed to the door (e.g. the top needs to be slightly moved to the frame and the door needs to be raised a bit)
    2. Put two air wedges under the door. One as close to the hinges as possible and the other in the middle
    3. Take note of the current orientations of the adjustment screws. The more the screw is pointing towards the door, the more the door has been adjusted outwards to wards the frame already.
    4. Take all the adjustment screws out.
    5. Adjust the bottom of the door to the left-right position that is needed.
    6. Start inflating both air wedges at the same time in equal amounts until the door is approximately at the right height.
    7. Adjust the left-right of the top hinge to the correct position. Note that this might have move significantly since loosening the adjustment screws.
    8. Insert and tighten the adjustment screw on the top hinge. Then do the same for all the other hinges.

We used to use a similar product to move large stones and sometimes to split them in stone masonry work.
