I purchased this Streamline Moderne/Art Deco 4 Drawer Chest of Drawers for $20 from a local thrift store. This Dresser had obviously been painted with a bright blue chalk paint. In this video, I will attempt to remove all of the blue paint using Kwik Strip Premium Stripper. I will then apply a traditional early american penetrating stain to restore the finished look this piece would have had in the 1940s. Thanks for watching!

I love seeing stuff like this! I love watching people paint old furniture to give the pieces new life, and I love watching people remove the paint to restore the pieces, too! It makes me wonder if the people who originally created the pieces ever thought of how much love would go into them over the years 💙

I enjoy getting old furniture and restoring it to its original beauty.
Sometimes it's really not about the profit from flipping it, it's the deep satisfaction of taking something that may have gone to the dump or was so hideous because of paint and making it beautiful again.
Heck, lots of what I repair, refurbish, stain and varnish gets given to someone who appreciates and needs it.

I’m not 100% sure, but I think my late grandmother had a similar set of dressers. She had a tall dresser like this one, and another that was wider and had a mirror. The hardware was different, I think, but I can’t be sure because I haven’t seen the dressers in a little over a decade. Thanks for another beautiful restoration and keeping the original drawer pulls! I happen to have inherited my mom's dresser and dressing table of the same style and era. She got this set in the mid 1940's. I also have one of her cedar chests of the same era. They have traveled to 7 duty stations -including Guam, and are a permanent fixture in our home and my heart. I have two waterfall dressers very similar to your piece that someone had covered in paint and Bob Ross esque landscapes. While I love Bob Ross, I do not like it on my furniture. For 8 years these have been sitting in my master bedroom closet so no one can see them. I just have not had the will or desire to go to the lengths it takes to make them shine again just as you did with your piece. It’s not the style of my house (I’m a MCM girl!), but it is beautiful. We finally found our forever home, [I forget if I have mentioned it yet] moved into it in June, and guess what? It has a workroom,I JUST FOR ME! 🙂😀😃
The workroom still has quite a few boxes, but one counter area is clear, and soooo, I am about to "give it a go!", and restore(maybe repair, too) a little magazine and newspaper, holder. I found Curtis (not sure why that name came to me, when I thought it should have a name, but everytime, I thought of a different name, my brain would say "don't do that to Curt) sitting on the short wall, in front of the dumpster bin below. Someone, else, thought he should be saved, and not tossed down into the mountain of garbage, below.
Wish me luck, everyone, please! 🙃😊
Oh! Also, I am a stay-at-home dad, to 3 young kids. Finding the time, when I have the energy and less pain(I have 2 spinal fusions), is going to be a challenge!

Stunning and Barry, that hardware was delicious, I'm so glad you didn't change it.

👏👏👏 it's gorgeous with the wood grain showing again! I feel the same about the hardware, keep it with the piece on this one

Your restorations are always so satisfying. Even though the style of this piece isn’t one I care for, I must say it’s really beautiful. You always do a remarkable job.

I redid this same dresser. It had a lot of cracking of the veneer on the top, so, I filled with body filler, sanded, chalk painted and applied a transfer. Used original hardware as well. It turned out so beautiful.
    I love yours!

You did an excellent job of refinishing this piece. The stain is perfect makes the grain pop.
I'm a huge proponent of keeping furniture in it's natural wood.
I have several waterfall style dressers and every one of them has wooden pulls that are long, have carvings or inset layers of wood. Absolutely none I've ever seen have tacky metal pulls.
The ones on your piece look like after market reproductions meant for a more expensive piece of furniture.

I do love Moderne as well, funny thing about theses gorgeous waterfall pieces is that although they look stunning everything falls off them easily if you have say, a nightstand for example 😆😨

Beautiful! I'm glad you kept the original hardware - I have a vanity with a round beveled mirror that I sit at every day which matches that perfectly!!
