A tank my husband knows quite well. My husband told me that Centurion is the base design for his favorite tank from his time in South Africa the Olifant.
Many moons ago...a then British army Quartermaster who ironically taught me logistics, his job was to package Centurion parts for the IDF at the Shrewsbury depot...
watched that this year for my Societies and Markets of the modern Middle East class, the ending was extremely jarring. Won't spoil it but it was so jarring that I even got teary eyed, highly recommend and it does make you have some sympathy for the Palestinians
Yea that’s a great film…however it has a very unexpected sudden change of style that has a huge impact on the viewer that obviously the director intended to do so. It’s what happened though so we must be shown in the only way possible- I’m sure there was a lot more footage that could not be shown. What is included is graphic enough. It’s an important film and it’s still a divisive issue regarding the responsibility for who actually bears accountability for what happened in those camps.
Great timing. The cynic in me wants to say people have been uploading stuff like this to profit off the 'controversial events' happening as of late. However your videos have always been nothing but objective and respectful to the subject matter so I trust ya
I like movies and series like this, where they keep music to a minimum, and rely on an realistic approach to sound. When done right, it can be a powerful and immersive tool.
I saw "Lebanon" many years ago, and it really impressed me. Also "Beaufort" (2007) is related to this topic, actually to the very end of this conflict.
All Israel war films are produced by extreme far left lobby, which has a real purpose to prevent young Israelis to join the army. "Beaufort" is the most cynical example, showing stupid generals and young soldiers just losing their lives in mostly stupid manner, while the original novel (If the Paradise exists...) has the exactly opposite motive, and the clear explanation why there actually was no choice, and why it was necessarily to protect the Israel citizens from the Lebanon territory.
You should do purple sunset from 2001 it takes place during the final weeks of japan before they would surrender in ww2 and the Soviet operation in Manchuria but it focus on three characters a female Soviet soldier, Chinese farmer, and a Japanese women and they work together to survive
Johnny, s back ..with more thoughtful and thought provoking stuff...cheers Matey.....currently restricted to camp at Clabby Towers...on a diet of Chicken soup, antibiotics and steroids...and good old paracetamol....sure knocks one sideways...the ,ol flu...😅😅
That “would deter young men from joining the army” criticism doesn’t make sense since Israel has compulsory conscription for Jews, Druze, and Circassians.
@@JohnnyJohnsonHistory Respectfully, sir, as an Israeli man who served in the mandatory service, I would like to point out that your remark "Every year there are thousands who refuse to join" suggests that you believe the "typical ordinary Israeli fella" has some sort of option. This choice is not as well-liked as you may believe since, trust me, it can lead to unpleasant situations and negatively affect your reputation. Regarding professional soldiers, I believe you are mistaking with conscript soldiers who choose to stay in the military after being commissioned as NCOs or COs. They usually sign for an additional several years, and very few of them "survive" to reach the upper parts of the pyramid; for this reason, their professional service is substantially different from that of the US army.
Thousands is a pretty low number. I went to university with one in the middle of nowhere in Canada. Must be a few thousand who dodged the draft? You tell me if draft dodging was an issue you ever witnessed or heard about? Do people protest it? I heard up to 1/3rd of young men attempt mental health exemption these days?
@@JohnnyJohnsonHistory Dodging your draft is definitely not popular over here. You'd be surprised but the main group who refuse to draft is the "Haredi" population and it's on religious basis ("Our service to the country is by praying and learning to torah"). Other groups like extreme leftist Israelis are definitely not the majority and their opinions aren't very popular.
@@omrikad Fellow Israeli here: To my surprise I had learnt that percentage of conscription eligible 18 year olds who refuse to serve is actually very significant. Dont wanna spout numbers that may be incorrect, but somewhere between 30-50%! Many dodgers are religious Jews who choose studying the Torah, and also feel they would not integrate well into the military, both on social grounds and possible inability to fully practice their religion. Worth noting many dodgers arent doing it on ideological grounds, and instead merely choose to put their life forward with academics, or work, instead of serving 3 years with pocket money salary. I imagine draft motivation may increase due to the war though.
I don't think young Israelis have any option of not serving the Army at some point of their life, whatever be the experience. For Israel, two things are absolutely true : 1) It will always have to be cautious of its neighbors who mostly do not want Israel to exist 2) Israel has a small population and high living standards, i.e., it does not have ample reserves of young people from poor families to serve as "disposable soldiers" as in many Third World armies. Therefore, it cannot have an army unless its small pool of highly qualified citizens come forward to participate. It might sound bitter, but that's how it is to be an Israeli at this point of time, I suppose.
IDF atrocities. A conscript army filled with messed-up, immature, barely competent 19 year old kids with weapons and power. A cross between the H!tler jungend and the US army in Vietnam.
War is always a mess, civilian casualties can never be avoided. And that operation was a race to trap the PLO in Beiroet. So civilian Lebanese casualties avoidance was not on the priority list. I once read there was an Israeli colonel who protested against this war and he was sacked.
This movie is completely false and is more of a science fiction movie than a war, not a single event in this movie actually happened, this movie is designed to squeeze cheap reactions from a very specific audience and the whole point of the movie is "how poor I am and how horrible the war is". As an armored fighter in the IDF I tell you that you do not understand what you are talking about at all, the IDF does not conduct combat like this, an order was never given to kill civilians in order to eliminate terrorists, they never rescued a body from a tank using a helicopter and certainly they will not bring in a prisoner of war Latank, a ridiculous and despicable movie.

Waltz with Bashir (2008) is another 1982 Lebanon War film that you should review.
Thanks for sharing this with us all...will look that one up...cheers...E...😊😊😊
I watched that film once, but it still sticks with me to this day. Especially the song, "I bomb Beirut".

Johnny! Hope you keep doing movie reviews, I like the variety!
I will try to do at least two a month hopefully more if the channel grows =)
Is it a centurion tank
Yes, the Centurion was improved by the Israeli Army. And the Israeli's gave their own names to tanks.
1982 Israeli solders carried Galil assault rifles. I watched them on TV. Now the Galils are gone.

Well. Johnny with the great review. Master Yoda tells me to watch this i should. And i will
Strong work as always brother man. 💪🔥👍
Thanks, Johnny. I'll give her a go.
I have watched Lebanon - superior from my perspective to the other Israeli film about Lebanon "Beaufort".
Can a tank scope zoom that close to human faces??
Tank scopes has normal 3 X magnification and 10 X. So using 10 X from distances of 25-50 meters = 2,5 - 5 meter distance view.

Every year, there are thousands who refuse to join. They also have professional soldiers too. Even drafts require some support from the population.
