Yeah - I saw this as Kilo Two Bravo. What they figured out happened - was the Soviets had mined the slopes of the hill to protect their positions on the top. Rain had washed these mines down into the dry river bed at the bottom of the hill. The Russians made no attempt to de-mine their positions when they left so all these mines were left in place to wash down the hill over the years and accumulate in the Dry River Bottom. The British Troops had decided to take a route through that creek bed as they approached a position they were going to - to stay out of sight. The end result - was that they walked into a concentration of mines accumulated over the years. First one guy hit a mine and then as they moved about in the river bed they kept encountering more and more. It was only afterwards that they figured out what had happened and why there were so many mines in that creek bed. One issue - was that they requested a Helicopter with a Hoist - to lift directly UP the people they were trying to get out. Instead they were sent a Helicopter with a Ramp at the back - which landed near them - but which they waved off as it was to dangerous to approach. Eventually they got a Helicopter with a hoist that could left the men out of the Dry River Bed and put them up on the hill they came from. .
I was deployed to the Kajaki Dam in 2010. The mines were an issue on the peaks, from Athens to Sparrowhawk West. There was a small path we had to hike for resupply. 1.75 miles with mines on each side of the mountain (at least that's what we were told). When this movie came out it did a good job trying to depict the area. Who ever the location guy was for this movie knew his stuff and tried to get as close to the real this as possible. Anyways, good review Johnny. Cheers.
I've watched this movie. One of the scenes that stuck is when one of the guys who stepped on a mine, on his nineteenth birthday, says this is not the worst birthday ever. The worst ever birthday was his eleventh, when his parents plain forgot about it.
Probably the most realistic Afghan film out there, as someone who was out there in 09. As for accents, can always tell a group of squaddies, a mixture of southerners, northerners, scousers, scots and the occasional Gurka and Fijian..and i wouldnt have it any other way
Glad to see this reviewed Johnny. Really tough film, and for me the best war film to show the horrors of modern war. Truly horrific and the closest to an anti-war film you could get.
That's good along with Blackhawk Down which for some future video could do a video about the helicopters there such as said Blackhawks, RPG-7's that took it down and Technicals which is cars and civillain vehicles turned to military use by slapping a gun on it or other offensive armory said to be the poor mans APC among who knows what others I think there's the OH-6 Cayuse is also another Delta Force uses it I think and AK-47 is there among the MP-5 and DSHK can also look into that really many.
That's cool and may also recommend Johnson on the vehicles and helicopters to do a video about like the jeep with guns and also the Chinook in there can be interesting to note.
Excellent film, And nostalgic for my childhood in a weird way growing up with this war constantly on the news, and leaving school the same year British troops pulled out.
The best war movies are inherently anti-war, not because they hammer "WAR IS BAD" into your skull but because they show it as it really is, dirty, ugly, painful, and often, ultimately pointless. At least, that's my opinion.
People who unironically find war films "awesome" and "looks like fun kicking ass" tend to only consume the more sanitised media that reflects upon war. Then you have excellent examples like Band of Brothers or Generation Kill that don't glamorise at all. Especially true of GK. in my opinion, even a masterpiece like BoB doesn't fully escape the lionisation of the soldiers who fought WW2. This does not mean I don't think they deserve it, they absolutely deserve our heartfelt respect and gratitude. But media today tends to show those men as these moral crusaders who knew their fight was so just they marched into battle, delighting in the glory of crushing tyranny. This is totally oversimplistic and I think it honours the soldiers of WW2 far more appropriately to depict their experiences as honestly as possible. Generation Kill does well avoiding this, perhaps because not enough time has passed for legends to grow from the conflict. But it unflinchingly looks at the chaos that reigns on even modern battlefields, despite technological improvements. War, regardless of the era is dehumanising, extremely traumatic and can be personally devastating.
@@JohnnyJohnsonHistoryOr today, with military fps video games that are power fantasies. Some war games beautifully capture war more honestly but many and more portray it as having a ton of fun blowing stuff up with heavy weapons
Johnny, just the other day I commented on one of your videos that I was a Paratrooper and you liked the comment. The Gammon bomb video. I was 2 Para and my Afghan tour was a breeze compared to the earlier ones. There's no finer Regiment of fighting men in the world. Utrinque paratus. Every man an Emperor.
Thanks brother. I'm glad you made it out and hope you are having an easy time in my beautiful green England these days. I used to live in Bath. Was TA soldier some 20 years ago but just for fun really. No tours.
Along with well could look into the vehicles and aircraft or helicopters of this movie noticed a Chinook helicopter there could look into a video on that in a future part or a military hummer is another.
I used to be in the British territorials. I couldn't always understand the English coming from about a 5th of the native speakers lol. But it's half the fun.

Really good review and who knows can check it out if not the movie this review later on if at all and also could do a video about the guns featured in this or others like the AK-47 and it's variants went through a list on the guns also the M2 Browning Machine gun, L85A2 and the sniper rifle shown there and in the movie Accuracy International L115A3 and maybe look into the M249 SAW if you haven't already did that and also could look into the M1 Abrams tank, Apache Attack copters, MI-24 Hind and still looking into the SA-7 and Stinger missiles idea among who knows what other anti-aircraft a lot these days also if you're looking through movies may want to look into this movie Fire Birds seems like some Top Gun Rip-off only starring Nicholas Cage and it's with helicopters instead of jets.
A really great movie, the guy who got his leg blown off and re-enlisted in the paras with a prosthetic leg is one tough mental lad.

"We need a helo with a hoist."
"Roger, here's a helo with a ramp."
"What part of HOIST did you not understand?"

I remember this well, I remember this real well
Excellent....as always....a searing honest account of a brutal conflict....cheers, Johnny....E
Thanks E! Happy Halloween from Canada.
This was a great movie but man was it hard to watch. Good review as always.

Hello jonny
When can we expect madras cafe????
Good movie. The way the soldiers act around each other, the kit etc all very authentic.
Excellent film, And nostalgic for my childhood in a weird way growing up with this war constantly on the news, and leaving school the same year British troops pulled out.
Wow that cat has such a nice voice

Yup. These are must watch for people considering joining the army. I'm not saying don't. It's just good to know what war is.
You fully understand the genre at its most complete my friend. You're spot on

@@JohnnyJohnsonHistory Woah, we just got some crazy backstory for Johnny haha.
Ah my Military experience is pretty limited. My war movie viewing hours greatly outweigh any training lol

I'm a Canadian, but I was born in England and lived there for about 10 years.

Another great movie is ‘the Beast’ from 1988, also set in Afghanistan, starring Jason Patric.
Some Americans might need subtotals. Although to be honest the dialects aren't too bad for anyone who is used to realistic British films.
This movie was devastating to watch and is part of the reason I left the military
I would love to see you do a review over generation kill hbo series
Can also say that's another possibility.
Along with well could look into the vehicles and aircraft or helicopters of this movie noticed a Chinook helicopter there could look into a video on that in a future part or a military hummer is another.
Great realistic soldiers movie. Although I did think that an American audience would need subtitles for the accents :)
Hello jonny waiting for madras cafe
The movie honours the soldiers. Some of those accents cannot be understood.
I used to be in the British territorials. I couldn't always understand the English coming from about a 5th of the native speakers lol. But it's half the fun.
I really did like this movie, although i did need the subtitles on.
Hello 🙋♂️jonny hope u remember about madras cafe
If you're looking for a more light hearted take on the war in Afghanistan, check out the BBC comedy series Bluestone 42.
Cat cleaning cat Part 2
