Congrats on ur 300th episode! I've been watching for a while & learning a lot. Saving to get myself a boat & hopefully will be able to get on the water in a few years. I've seen that Prout Cat on Yacht World for ages & was wondering what the deal was, I could see it was in really bad shape but you pointed out a lot of things I would never have thought to notice, good content, thanks!
4:25 This boat was in Auction a year ago. Florida based. I was on west coast, so I never was able to visit it, and I think it went for about 4k - 6k. It was for sale by that damaged car auction site...'Copart' I can't prove it was the one that went for 6k, but the Cat was rough, and it was a Prout. I wish I could see the title, of when it sold last, or a HIN to run a check.
Congratulations on the 300th episode. An aspect that you didn't mention in today's episode are repaired boats, or perhaps I'd be better to say the dreamers. For example the first boat you discuss is the Prout (ridden hard and put away wet). She'll likely sell for a song and will become someone's project (sorry dream). They'll spend heaps of money, hundreds of hours of their time, all the while probably dreaming of coral atolls. And whilst some people do finish the job most never do. The reality of the challenges, whilst keeping down a job, bringing up a family etc can be daunting. And so the boat will eventually become another's project boat to finish. OK that's point 1. Point 2 is more subtle. Amateurs often don't fix things correctly. People who build boats professionally are trained professionals. They did apprenticeships, technical training. Even ongoing supplier training is common. And that may mean that down the track that Prout will look Bristol fashion but it' maybe superficial. The underlying repairs/improvements may be significantly sub par. (Even UA-cam offers a great number of bad techniques in doing such work. The blind leading the blind so to speak.) So point 2 is that in 3 or 4 years time, many of the storm damaged boats you see today will again come up for sale seemingly in great condition but riddled with problems of their subpar repairs for their future owner.
Just bitten by a huge sailboatitis bug with the Catalina. Definitely bigger and heavier than we were thinking about for our 10,000# lift and for our first serious cruiser/racing sailboat. Love your videos and subscribed today. Thanks for sharing your wealth of expertise.
@ Sorry for the confusion- I just really want it, especially with the positives it has going for it. We’re not ready for a boat that big just yet. We probably should stay around 27-28 feet. You just really had me super excited about it, especially since it’s so near to us. I definitely need to calm down and be more logical and practical about things. 😉
Your advice is invaluable, especially to a newbie like me. I bought my first boat this summer (1966 O’Day daysailer) and logged a hundred hours. Now I’m looking at a cruiser purchase next year ($40k budget) and your channel has been a BIG inspiration. Always thoughtful and honest advice. See you on the water soon! 😊
Best presentations on this subject matter on the internet!! Glad you have the time to keep up on this channel as you have GREATLY improved Practical Sailor’s content!!
I planned to head to Florida this winter to find a new boat to live on so I really appreciate this video. It would be great if you could dig deeper into this subject since so much of the current sailboat market found itself in the hurricane's path. Still plan to head to Florida but more nervous than ever about my ability to evaluate the situation. Congrats on 300. You're a gift to the sailing community.
Hey Tim, love your videos. My friend bought a brand new prout event in 94,had it shipped to Montreal. He then sailed it to here in Burlington ontario. I and various friends cruised it all the way through florida.i also crewed from Guatemala to Mexico, cuba then back to Florida. Unfortunately that one is in terrible condition including bogged outboard engine where a yanmar once was.a real shame Cheers from dundas.will check out the van build!
Tim, I’m holding you accountable for my depressed state. I have followed you for quite some time, but only weeks ago I binge watched your USA to Bahamas’ and return series. Fantastic. What would cheer me up, a Lady K does the Greek Island series…. I love the “Charlie the Truck series” but I need you back on the yacht ASAP. Stay upright & keep your powder dry. The Lone Ranger. PS I reposted as you didn't respond :-)
My 1996 Beneteau 42s7, which I've owned for over twelve years, is powered by a Perkins Prema 50 HP. A couple of years ago the high pressure fuel pump was professionally rebuilt and the engine performance greatly improved. The starter was replaced a few years ago; the raw water pump has been regularly serviced too. I would rather have the boat powered by a Yanmar (my two previous boat had Yanmars and I loved them) but with proper maintenance and care the Perkins continues to perform well (fingers crossed). Oddly, this engine did not come with an hour meter. This past April haulout I replaced the original 30MM propeller shaft with Aqua Met 22 grade stainless steel along with the cutlass bearing and a new three blade feathering propeller. To replace the shaft I had to pull the rudder; I took the opportunity to replace the lower bushing (the upper bushing was still in perfect condition). In June, I replaced the anchor windlass (along with the controller and footpads) after the original one gave up the ghost. Tomorrow I'm replacing the anchor windlass breaker. Oh, and in July the compressor for the frig crashed so I replaced the entire refrigeration system. So this has been a costly year to own a boat. But alas, I love sailing and my boat so I guess I'm stuck. Thanks for the video.....I enjoyed it.
I would be interested in your thoughts on the pros and cons of catamaran and a mono haul for sailing. Do they sail the same? Is it easy to single hand a thirty foot cat?
Hi Tim, I hope you and your daughter are doing amazing. Just wanted to show you some love and tell you I am so grateful for all the tips you are giving so freely. And congrats on your 100K subscriber, I have been watching it like a hawk too. I am still shopping for my perfect sailing boat for next season in Quebec, Canada or close to Mtl. I have my eye on Champlain lake. We are a family of two adults and 4 kids (2x10 and 2x13 years old, budget of 50 000K CAD) if you have some tips for us for what kind of boat for weekend sailing and sleeping all 6 of us, it it sure welcome. Hunter maybe, maybe not?
I'm pretty sure that disclaimer is just a new legal protection for the broker that some are putting on all of their listings. I've seen it on tons of listings as of 2 months ago. Even on nice boats.
Going to look at a boat tomorrow morning the guy's only owned it for 4 years so this is one of the legendary covid pandemic boats coming back onto the market. I hope it looks as good as the pictures. I looked at the cape Dory last week the pictures were beautiful but then found out the boat never splashed this year and there was a quarter inch of diesel under the engine, what a shame
Lmfao I've been eyeing the very first boat you showed on several sites, and being a person that is new to the sailing world AND living in Cape Coral (not too far from where that boat is located) I thank you for the advice to steer clear!
If it’s selling cheap enough this can actually be a great time to get that dream boat you know you could never actually afford for one that is in Bristol fashion. You just need to know exactly what you’re buying. Boats that can be beaches or sitting on their encapsulated full keels could be very salvageable even though they were blow ashore in a hurricane now a six foot thin bolt on keel will likely damage the hull just sitting on a sandbar.
That Prout is not too far off the mark, likely get it down around 30 or so, but the issue isn't if it's a great buy. At 39 foot it's a biggish boat. The issue it's not a seagoing cat. It's designed for lakes, rivers, and close shore cruising. With some tender loving care, and slow updates, it would be a good liveaboard.
i got an 88 laguna 22with a crack in the cabin top about a foot from the mast base, how bad should i be worried. when i noticed it i just put a piece of flex tape over it ... i have sailed with it as is and dont know how foolish that is.
First? 😮 Had to. Several years out from buying a boat but love watching these videos and dreaming. If you ever get a chance, a review of a boat from Sirius Yachts would be great!
Sirius Yacht look like an amazing boat. That high saloon would be great at anchor. 35ds would be perfect for solo sailing or a couple. And that swing keel would be great for the shallow water or cleaning the haul. Is it a jewel made of glass or a strong safe reliable world cruiser?
Yachtworld has an IP 380 that’s been listed for sale since before the hurricane (I know, because I’ve kept my eye on that model for a while), but it’s located in Port Charlotte. Should I assume it’s probably not in the same shape it was in? The listing hasn’t changed at all.
"Take off the rose colored glasses" As someone who spends days daydreaming about sailing and even the occasional night spent at an imaginary helm, this is important for me. I'm desperate to sail, but I don't want to get into a bad situation because I got caught up in the fantasy of it.
Might be something for the future or your other job 🙃 but I'm in Colorado with an rya coastal skipper and am looking at buying a boat. The pacific looks nice and I've seen several youtubers do it in sub 40ft boats, but what boats are good for the pacific. Also alluring arctic has done Alaska and cold weather seems fun, how do I prep a boat or myself for cold weather sailing. Ain't no one expecting me to rock up in Halifax in November but I want to.
I would like something like a step by step guide of how to analyze a boat. Something like. First. Check this then this this this. And. Find red flags and how much that cost
Can you really trust a marine surveyor? I find the quality/knowledge varies quite a bit. The last one turned out to be a buddy of the broker who recommended him and we got screwed. Ask your broker who he recommends and then choose someone else....
We want Charlie. Winter is here and your boat is wrapped. No excuses anymore. It is time for tailgate sun sets, your favorite beverage, and a cheesy brat :)P
Interesting comment in Perkins/Yanmar. In Europe, Yanmar parts are very expensive. By comparison, Perkins parts are cheap. Later Perkins engines like the M92B are actually a Cat engine. Marinised by Perkins Sabre and painted Perkins blue, but white under the blue paint. If you don't like Perkins engines, then maybe that's because lots of the marinising was so bad. Like those done by Westerbeke. Awful aluminium mixed with cast iron and mild steel. Much like modern Yanmars. I have owned Yanmar engines and Perkins. The old Yanmar was a dog. The new yanmar was poor on fuel. Thr modern Perkins/ Cat is wonderful
This is a nightmare. lol I just can't pull the trigger and I'm not gregarious enough to befriend the local sailors and boating people, apparently. Everything I ask, seems too much trouble. Maybe I don't have the right shoes or watch. . . ( Sorry, context, I'm literally looking at a 2004 Oceanis 311 clipper)
I write very few comments, but you have to comment on this nonsense. You are entitled to your opinion, but you should only use your reach to disseminate facts. Sail boat ads by owner with pictures that clearly show no effort was made to do even a basic tidy up of personal items down below, let alone coil the algae stained ropes on deck is a kiss of death for me. The boat itself might be quite decent otherwise, but hey! Is this what you think of/how you maintain your boat? Wash your face in the morning? So glad I found your channel. 🫡✌️❤️🇨🇦
Just want to thank you all for the comments and love on the video. 300 is a BIG deal and I am so happy that you're here with me. Love you guys!

I love the name on the hurricane damaged boat “Blown Away”. 😂
Episode 300!!! I've been enjoying every single one of these videos and I can't wait for more!
Thanks so much!
I really appreciate this video. I'm constantly trying to learn more so I can enjoy my first boat
Thanks for the video Tim. Will be reaching out to you soon, looking to buy something next fall to cruise the Caribbean for a couple of years. Cheers.

I have a Catalina 25 in Pacific NW/Seattle. Really like the 320 and it would perfect for my next boat.
As always, another great video,. The matching numbers restoration of the 8,000 K Car had me in fits!

@@LadyKSailing You’re more than welcome! Thank you for all the efforts!!
I live in Pinellas county Florida. cant wait to see the boat market this year.
good advice to stay based if you get bitten with sailboatitis
Good looking out. I’ve been looking online at this very same Prout and missed quite a bit of what you just described. Thanks for all you do.

Great reference video. Should be watched each time you leave the house to look at a boat.
Love the K car jab! That is 100% True👍

Yes the 2016 boats in the Caribbean are all ex-charter
ex-hurricane boats. Do a show on the pro/con of buying one.
I'll repower that Catalina with likely a reconditioned engine. Thanks Tim.⚓
Quick question. Have you an opinion or an episode on the O'Day 37 from around the late 70's?
0:36 LOL "Blown Away"🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
You're looking trim and fit Lady K, keep it up man!
how to inspect the boat? Could you please refer to the video? Thank you!
Good advice.

Loved the k-car reference…. 😎
I was tracking this boat myself and was surprised to see it re-listed. 40k is very very high for the condition.

Great job Tim!!
I’m looking at a 1972 Gulfstar 36 on the hard in Florida.
What price range should I be thinking?
No more than 40k in great shape… I almost bought one few months ago for 25k is ready to sail condition.
can't compare cats to monos and lady driven usually means the oil and maintenance was never done but it's pretty to look at

Its 34’ not 39’ and Prouts are among the most sturdy well built cats ever built, more have circumnavigated than any other cat.
i got an 88 laguna 22with a crack in the cabin top about a foot from the mast base, how bad should i be worried. when i noticed it i just put a piece of flex tape over it ... i have sailed with it as is and dont know how foolish that is.

I think I need a shower after seeing that catamaran. All kidding aside, another great video!

Something is only worth what someone else is willing to pay.
The Prout…maybe offer $9,000?
People that buy basket cases thing they are getting a bargain.
8,000th K car. What a crack! :-)

You don't have to be an expert to recognize that this boat is done.
K car comment bawhhaha 😂
'Prout' in French is a childish way of saying 'fart'. Just thought people needed to know that.
