VW will almost never set a check engine light on older models, only if it will not run at all. you can have all plugs misfiring, the engine running barely, but till it finally either has a severe knock or does not run, that light will stay off. Did make a bet on the misfire being plug leads, there is a reason they are the best selling VW part, and I normally would change them every second plug change, simply because they are so well known to fail. Silicone grease inside the boots both sides recommended, as other wise wet weather will make them misfire and arc over, and it does not take long for that arc over to damage them as well.

Kt seems you need to replace rings and/or valve stem seals if oil is getting into the combustion chambers and killing the plug.
