Great video Skyler! Thanks for getting out so much information. The video you shot looks awesome and it really helps give us an idea of what is possible. It motivated me to set up a node and check out this aspect of the hobby. And play with a Rasberry Pi. Woo hoo!
@KD0WHB @SkylerF at about 2 minutes and 30 seconds into this video or so you show a portable full duplex kit that you built using two low-cost radios and a Raspberry Pi and a few other items... can you please elaborate on how you built this kit or send instructions? I would really like to build a similar setup using two inexpensive radios and a Raspberry Pi and whatever else is needed and join the AllStar link network. Really cool video, thank you for making this and sharing it with all of us! Thumbs up! 73s W3TCP
Thanks for this video! Great Job! I just got my HAM license recently and this helped me understand how to use DTMF tones on echolink enabled repeaters.
Thank you for posting this video, it was helpful. Unfortunately there's not very much reliable information out there and if you don't have someone to help you that understands it, it can be quite daunting. If you know of any 'MUST READ' sites please send me a link and again thanks for making these videos, your work is appreciated. ac0v
Unfortunately I don’t. I built this many years ago and did it mostly just by trial and error when I was picking resistor values etc. I would recommend the hamvoip website with some of their baofeng guides as a starting place
How long does an Allstar node stay connected till it times out? Or, can you leave an AllStar node connected permanently? Is there a way to connect to a group of nodes? Are there the equivalent of YSF, DMR, and D-Star Reflectors that you can connect to using the AllStar system? Can you set up your own AllStar Reflector, if that a Reflector exists in the AllStar system?
It shouldn’t time out, but sometimes if the connection is unstable it will disconnect. Try a permalink. Look in your rpt.conf for what DTMF does cop 13 and cop 11. 13 permanently links and 11 disconnects your perma link
Edit: Replace cop,13 with ilink,13. Oops!... Edit2: You can use ilink,11 to unlink. (See 'functions' section of /etc/asterisk/rpt.conf.) Yes, you can link two nodes together permanently using ilink,13. Have a look at /etc/asterisk/rpt.conf in the 'functions' section. 73, Jeremy [W0JRL] (Developer of RasLink)
Skyler F Could you make a vid on the full duplex setup. If i think on full duplex , im thinking on a duplex filter 2 radios , and big shift. Kinda like a repeater system.
Im trying to connect a second node, and it wont connect to any hubs that i normally use, it comes up as the same ip address as my previous one, is possible thats I need to assign it a static ip? And if so how do i doi that? Im using allstar 1.5 obviously.
Yes, you do need a USB sound card. It doesn't matter whether you buy a professionally made one, or you build one yourself. Unfortunately, AllStar cannot drive internal sound chips such as realtek. It has to be a CMedia branded chip. You can use either the CMedia-108 (both A and B variants) or the CMedia-119 (both A and B variance). 73, Jeremy [W0JRL] (RasLink developer)
Skyler F Just got a box out of china with some usb cm108 fobs and a bunch of bf888s. the mods (bf888s rf reduced to 40 mw & cm108 wiring to chip) has been done, now it is just the setup configuration of the Doug Crompton v1.5 image.
Yes easily! You can create command macros or shortcuts under the macros section of the rpt.conf file. You can run a string of DTMF, bash commands and more using macros.
Why don't they make an Anrdoid client so people can connect to AllStar without having to carry a radio with them and be near a node? If everyone used Android clients we wouldn't need radio at all... and we can call it Skype ;)
They don't make an app for it, but you can use the Zoiper app to connect via Iax to an AllStar node. You can also use the EchoLink app if you setup your AllStar node with EchoLink. I'm all for mixing computers / internet, (unlike the IRLP project) but taking the RF out of it completely would take the fun out of it ;)
My opening comment had a degree of sarcasm in it. IMO, the fan has already been taken away by AllStar. If I want to speak to a radio amateur in Australia I can join an Australia ham group in Facebook and chat to them or arrange to Skype them. The fun of radio is the achievement of actually reaching Australia with your own equipment, not the Internet.
gee gang.. i talked with jim in tennessee ralph in california and tom in texas and herman in virgina and francesco in italy on my cell phone..... didnt need no radio... so what is the big deal with this junk........
Sure... Yes, you can do a lot with a cellphone... but also, you can't randomly meet retired engineers and professionals, and get started in a career just by talking on a cellphone dialing random numbers. I don't mess with this Voip linking over amateur radio as much anymore, but thanks to my interest in high school, I got internships at White sands, lockheed martin, and have had other radio jobs and have not even graduated college yet.

Great video ! The shack-on-a-bike is awesome!. I hope you have an old school generator on your wheel.. For DC charging. --... ...--
Great video Skyler! Best one I've found describing allstar for the beginner.

Do you have parts list and plans for the dual baofeng model you built in a can? I like the look and want to build one of these. Thank you in advance!

I would like to build this is there any way u can show me how or have a parts list

can anyone tell me if two local repeaters can be linked using Allstar in permanent mode??

Greetings from Costa Rica.. how You program. The Baofeng yo allstar commands?
Skyler F Could you make a vid on the full duplex setup. If i think on full duplex , im thinking on a duplex filter 2 radios , and big shift. Kinda like a repeater system.
Great job! I'm going to share this Skyler- 73
Dou you have video how you make it?
how many people build and sell these to other hams?
for a resonable price i see one on ebay right now for about 450.
Im trying to connect a second node, and it wont connect to any hubs that i normally use, it comes up as the same ip address as my previous one, is possible thats I need to assign it a static ip? And if so how do i doi that? Im using allstar 1.5 obviously.
I just to happen to have the pakratt232 (gifted to me) is there a modern use for this?
Interesting Video... 73's From N1WCO Cape Cod Ma...
if I'm running it on a laptop and it has the mic in can sound out do I need the USB sound card my HT has vox

Does AllStar link support digital modes or would these modes cause collisions with established commands?
yes, you can cross link digi with AllStar. I am doing it now. Skyhublink.com
Thank you!
can i use Yaesu radio's for a allstar node , like the FT 1900,2900,7900 etc.
yes, just need to get the audio pins wired correctly

tried the comand *33 then echolink number didnt work here I guess node needs to be associated in advance with echolink
Yeah, echolink.conf needs to be setup first. Commands are outdated too, the new image changed things up. *33 is the same in the new image though
can we programm "short cut" ? if we dont remember the node remember but we can programm short dtmf code?

Thanks ,i may try AllStar with the new board i just saw

What board is it? I haven't heard of an AllStar board
www.repeater-builder.com/products/usb-rim-lite.html
Ok now I understand, yeah I have heard of the rim-lite, cheaper then a URI but you don't have to build it like a modified sound card
i know that w0jrl i've talked to him a few times. he cool dude..
gonna have a allstar here soon :)

+Scott Edick Awesome! Please stop by my node when you get it up 40764
Im trying to
*10 disconnects the last node you connected to, much quicker that the way you describe
Nice un-attended transmissions
Love your vids 🙏 subscribed 🤞 73 2E0FNM
Nice job.. Keep making more..

Now they do have Android & Smart phone APPS 2018
rbtx99 thanks for telling me how I can have fun. Didn't realise I was doing it wrong all this time.
@@mikepansini4904 but do you need your own (home) node? or can you (just) use the android app to connect to allstar?
great stuff, but it's the internet nothing more nothing less.
Very true
