Oakland Mayor "hiding from nothing" says Sheng Thao's attorney

Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao through her attorney on Friday said she was unaware of any investigation until the FBI searched her home.
The statement comes a day after federal agents searched the mayor's home, along with several properties owned by men linked to a recycling company that contracts with the city.
"Mayor Thao is ready, willing and able to cooperate fully with federal investigators. She has nothing to hide," said Tony Brass, a lawyer representing Thao. "It’s unfortunate that she has had to endure the bad optics of having this search warrant executed on her home. She would have cooperated with this investigation without the need for this search. She will continue to do the work Oakland expects from their mayor and provide the federal government with whatever information they are seeking. We have no information that she is or will be the target of this or any investigation."

She's drawing a salary. The taxpayers have a right to expect her to show up for work. For most employees, an unapproved absence from work for more than three days is grounds for dismissal.
She is probably using sick, vacation, management leave, or PTO. Likely she has made City HR aware. A simple email or even a text is all that is required.
As a local government employee myself, that is all that is required.

@@shelbynamels7948 She is likely on sick, vacation , or executive management leave in which you can take in minute increments or up to whatever time you have available.
I reported to an elected official here in Oakland and it pretty much works the same as civil employees. He would call in sick just like they rest and get paid from sick time. If she plans to take an extended leave not matter the type of time used, it should be announced publicly as a courtesy to the but it's not mandatory. Elected officials have rights as well and privacy laws especially medically related can be kept 100% private. I would lean more on her being on sick time vs. any other as she will resign taking any vacation or management days awarded in pay where sick is not paid out when she vacates.
The silence has gone on too long for her to recover. She should have held a conference immediately.

Discretionary Time Off: Any time off taken by the Mayor is generally at their discretion. They are expected to manage their schedule and ensure that their duties and responsibilities are covered, either by delegating tasks to deputy mayors or other city officials.
Public Accountability: Unlike regular employees, elected officials are accountable to the public and must be transparent about their activities, including any time they take off.
Continuity of Governance: Even when the Mayor takes time off, the functioning of the city government continues. Deputy mayors and other staff can handle day-to-day operations in the Mayor's absence.
While the Mayor can take time off, it is generally managed in a way that does not disrupt the governance and administration of the city.

Mayor Thao is a mover and a shaker. The independent audit recommended she fire chief Armstrong for his abysmal performance on crime and his mishandling of police misconduct and corruption. Brenda Harbin-Forte was removed from the police Commission so now both are retaliating. The mayor has the right to hire a more competent police chief and commissioner.
If she’s hiding from nothing, then she should be addressing the citizens of Oakland about the incident that happened at the Juneteenth festival. She should have most definitely been at the press conference along with a brand new police chief. She’s been too busy scraping up a lawyer, and hiding from the press. There’s a cover up happening because several citizens are reporting multiple fatalities at the festival when the media and police dept. are only reporting injuries 😮 uh uh people died and they’re not reporting it. Not to mention the $17 million grant to fight crime that the city lost because they didn’t fill out the paperwork in time. If you have done nothing wrong…you don’t need a lawyer. No more excuses she needs to resign immediately.

For a whole host of reasons, anyone who finds themselves under some kind of legal investigation is going to get a lawyer. It is asinine to suggest that the mayor should not have one here. The investigators want to close a case, whether or not the parties under investigation are innocent. They’re human; they’ll do whatever they can get away with. The lawyer is there to ensure no one’s civil rights are violated, and that the FBI stay within the bounds of their warrant.

Oakland is actually one of the most beautiful locations in the Bay Area, outside of SF and Berkeley. Once we can get a DA in office who actually cares about its citizens and communities affected by crime, only then can we rid our streets of filth.
