San Jose is dead last in attendance and players have difficulties living there because of the high cost of living.
Meruelo seems combative and politically incorrect, which was made apparent by his press conference with Bettman. A bully who just wants what he wants regardless of others. Example: the severance given to his employees when he has billions. Dude should spend some money on therapy or just take his money and retire.
This Murelo guy sounds like a real piece of work. Arizona and the NHL should allow the franchise to return only if this yahoo doesn't have a dollar invested in it.
@@thedailytalon9259 Incorrect, it is the other way around. He burned too many bridges beyond repair. No matter if you are a Governor, a mayor or an elected official, would you work with this guy? I know I would not if I were in their position.
The Coyotes by this April had, via a series of incompetent ownership groups, burned so many bridges that winning a land auction would end up being pretty much the last chance for that team to remain in Arizona. Losing the Tempe new arena referendum was still a heavy blow to the Yotes.
Am I the only one that saw the positive in the land departments statement? They canceled the auction because of THE applicant, not ONE OF the applicants. I take that to mean the Yotes were the only applicant and theoretically they should get the land if they pay up.
They canceled it because they want Alex Meruelo to acquire a Special Use Permit before going forward with an auction. The initial application was already approved by the Arizona Land Department. They requested this permit and Meruelo irrationally reacted to the cancellation.
My guess is that this is related to the “amusement park district” designation that Meruelo wanted - if I recall, that request came out AFTER the land-auction process began. And while many land-sales can have contingencies tied to it (typically obtaining a mortgage), an auction cannot. I always wondered what would happen if Meruelo bought the land and then couldn’t develop it. The cancellation is right, I think, but the timing is suspect. It’s also suspect that there are other potential bidders, but the ASLD doesn’t even acknowledge them. That said, with everything Meruelo has tried to do, I don’t think he’s being malicious, I think it’s just a matter of competence, or lack thereof. He has grand dreams, but doesn’t know how to execute them. And right now, he probably can’t afford to hire someone who can.
I love these conspiracy theories "fans" like you put out there. There would not have been any confirmed additional bidders until the DAY OF the auction. Not about the Arizona Land Department "acknowledging" them to you own disapproval. We can speculate all we want about why and when it was canceled, but that also does not matter. It was in the ASLD's right to do so. Yes, Meruelo has proven his competence has been completely lacking, but that does not mean he cannot afford to hire an attorney that specializes in these specific real estate dealings.
@@mreppen1 Quebec City population too small if I was nhl I would go to Houston and phoenix and also potentially New Orleans these just bigger markets from population to branding to increasing hockey popularity in the south and these cities already have multiple other sports teams so its not personal its just business it just makes sense to go to these cities
@@NHLCrazy2007 No conspiracy theory, and I recall some reporting that there were four expected bidders (might’ve been from Brodie’s earlier video, but I could be mistaken). I think the process that ASLD is imposing makes sense, I’m faulting Meruelo for not learning, anticipating, and following the process. Personally I have no stake in the game, I live in - and am a fan of the team in - the opposite corner of the country, New Jersey. I just feel for the fans in the Phoenix area who have been on this rollercoaster for years, lost their team, and are still on the ride.
I am confused on the process. They seem to say this requirement is for ONE applicant. Isn't this open to qualified bidders? this would then seem to favor one bidder, that would be their problem. I thought there were other bidders ready to apply. Also how can you get permit approval when you don't own the land? First thing on any applications in the planning review process is who is the LEGAL Owner of the property? Sounds like a lawsuit to me.
I go out to Arizona four times a year. One for a Diamondbacks 🐍game, then one for a Suns game, and one for a Cardinals game and then one other visit. In the past it was great to go to Glendale, to watch a Coyotes game and then the next day, go across the street to go and watch the cardinals game. However with the Coyotes going through several ownership changes and I could see why the ASLD is skeptical. My personal preference is for the Suns owner purchase the franchise from Mr. Meruelo and then renovate the footprint center for both basketball and hockey
Lol, doesn't want to get a true arena, not paying hotel tabs, underpass employees, no family travel..... wants a site for multiple attractions to try and avoid taxes and then gets shut down by the state..... this owner is looking for a cash grab and has zero interest in actually owning a sports team for the community and it's fans. I'd be absolutely pissed if I were an AZ Coyote fan. This man has destroyed this whole thing.
The only thing unprecedented is giving up your franchise and saying they will be back in 5 years. That is just something that doesn’t happen. The statement from the State says the door is still open. The COYOTE says it’s shut, we are never coming back. Hopefully this does end it all and the Coyotes “owner” doesn’t drag this on forever playing with the hearts of the fans in Phoenix. Maybe one day the first serious ownership group will start hockey in Phoenix.
He did not say there will be Coyotes 2.0 in 5 years. This is just the exclusive window he was granted by the league to actually get something done. Alex Meruelo needs to go and needs to RIGHT NOW.
As The Hockey Guy said yesterday - "This is why the team is now in Utah." Between ownership(s), various levels of government, court challenges, lawsuits, bankruptcies and what all else, it seems it's just been one goddam headache after another with that franchise from day one and the league finally ran out of patience. Took them 28 freakin' years but it finally happened.
Finally happened? It is not about moving the damn team. It is about THIS owner who failed deliver on his promise. All the other owners who preceded him do not matter at this point. It was what Alex Meruelo failed at doing is what led to the hockey assets being sold off. This is squarely on him, not the City of Phoenix, any Tempe officials or anyone from the Arizona Land Department. All of the blame is on Meruelo, no one else.
So nice of Arizona to change things at the last minute. Seriously, so many people here are blaming Meruelo, when per Arizona's statement they initially *did not require* the permit to proceed with the auction in the beginning.
It's because the zoning was incorrect. It's talked about in the video, one Phoenix council member talked about how the Coyotes didn't even have a zoning lawyer.
The state didn't change the rules. Meruelo only wanted it to be zoned a a theme park district to avoid paying taxes on it, and didn't get a regular zoning permit. He didn't even hire a lawyer to look into it because he had already stated he wanted it zoned as a threme park. This is all on him.
Meruelo will never own another pro sports team. Whether that’s in Arizona or elsewhere. If the Coyotes ever come back it will be with a new ownership group.
Alex Meruelo is doing his best to bring back an expansion team to Phoenix Arizona. I wish the fans and the local media would get off his back. Show some respect to Alex Meruelo.
Also said it's because he refused to get a special use permit. If that's the reason it got canceled then he can't sue because he created the situation. His hands are unclean legally speaking.
Starting to think if the Coyotes return, Alex M won't be part of it. I feel like everything is happening for a reason. As others have said, I really don't feel this guy should be spearheading any of this.
Do yourself a favor and like we say to Alex Meruelo, GO AWAY. Coyotes fans have a right to want another team, just like Minnesota, just like Winnipeg, and just like potentially Atlanta. You may not want another team in Arizona, but your ignorant comment will not fly here.
@@NHLCrazy2007 I dont mean the fan base. I feel bad for you guys. I mean the government. It's like their shittin on you every step of the way. Like saying. They dont want a hockey team in their state.
Conspiracy theory: the NHL asked AZ to torpedo the auction so Meruelo can't bid on it and win so the five year window runs out and the the NHL can go back to Phoenix without him.
Better to cancel the auction now rather than proceed with the sale and deal with all the inevitable litigation over the theme park district zoning. Saves the state millions in litigation fees.
I have to wonder if Bettman's agreement was extended exclusively to Meruelo or open to other potential owners? The state land trust is seemingly specifically referring to a hockey arena. I also heard the Suns owner was to be one of the bidders. I also think that if he wanted the theme park district designation, and hadn't done it yet, he was already behind in the process.
The window of exclusivity has only been for Alex Meruelo. The only way it would be for other potential owners is if the league revokes it (which is possible) and acquires the inactive franchise's assets. And PHNX Sports' Gerald Bourguet (who covers the Suns) has already debunked that rumor about Mat Ishbia being one of the other bidders.
During the press conference bettman said it was exclusive to this dude but what that really means is the league needs to approve any change of ownership. This was probably the only way the league could get him to agree to the sale of the assets (players, coaches, etc) and knew he'd crap the bed.
This should be their Plan B. I say this because if the Coyotes won the auction, the team would resume play by the 2027-2028 season. However, that was if the auction was going to be 4 days from today. Now that it’s rescheduled, this could throw off everything and the arena might not be built in time by 2029, which is when the Coyotes will be folded. The Coyotes played at the footprint center before, and if all else fails, the Footprint center will become the Coyotes new home again.
In other words the state of Arizona wants to make even more money off the deal by requiring the coyotes to purchase a new " special permit" at, I'm sure, an increased and ballooned price. They know he is at a disadvantaged position and now they're going to take advantage of him got to love government.
Actually, Meruelo said (demanded) that the state zone it as a theme park district (Even Brody reported on that in April). Theme park districts are tax exempted from state, but the land owner can tax however he likes for going on the land, or patronizing an establishment on the land. Yeah, clearly he's the victim here.
Yeah - they better fucking pay if they want to be here. Theyve been here tax free coasting off taxpayer money, MAKING NO PROFIT for the organization NOR the city. Stop talking about crap you know nothing about. Unless you live in the City of Glendale and are familiar with all of the shit Glendale did for the team, your opinion is irrelevant
the nightmare is meruelo and what he did and is still doing to us fans. he is beyond incompetent and just refuses to work with the needed stakeholders for anything. he has more than pissed off the fans, the local media, coyotes employees, every politician he needs support from, and in general everyone that is needed to make a sports franchise work. as much as I am hurting from losing the team i love(d) and dying for return of yotes 2.0 I cant see anyway it can ever work if meruelo is involved.
This has been huge news in Arizona since the move, should maybe someone from the State office have helped them along with the correct permit/approvals?
This goes hand-in-hand with my comment on the previous video. ASLD, by REQUIRING a special use permit BEFORE the auction, all but guarantees the inability of collusion by those bidding. Low-balling a bid by participants, acting as independent entities when in actuality are partners and as such each profiting from similar development plans. Demanding a "pre-requisite" ensures the integrity of the bidding process. Not only for the good of the state, but for the actual participants without bias to each other. The only "blip" is...why do this now? So late in the process. The answer to me is quite clear, ASLD realized that those individual participants who have shown interest were previously linked in other endeavors bringing the entire integrity of the process into question.
Too much sensational conjecture here. If there were three other bidders and the state was opposed to an arena, they would just proceed with the auction, use Meruelo to drive up the price, then reject the arena bid for the lack of proper permits. It’s more likely that Meruelo is the only registered bidder and they are afraid of selling the land for the minimum bid thereby driving down the value of the balance of the state land. The postponement is a panic move to get more bidders involved.
Meruelo really doesn’t seem like someone people what to do business with. I don’t see how he got this far without all the ducks in a row? If he needs a permit why isn’t he working on that instead of going into legal options that will take longer. I mean is applying for a permit not the quicker of the two options?
Alex Meruelo no longer has enough if any left that want to work with him. This is a fact. And as I said to you earlier, his incompetence and arrogance has led him to a point now that he really has no real favorable path to solve the arena issue. He lost the team. He has alienated himself beyond return after he put out that response to the auction cancelation. He needs to go and needs to now.
Alex Murelo needs to be jail for complete hoodwinking the team staff and fanbase. He's the reason why the Coyotes were in this mess they're in. I really hope that the Coyotes can come back to the NHL but not under any circumstances have Murelo's name in the team. His actions show that he is NOT fit to run this business due to his incompetent.
@BrodieBrazil Thanks again for the video. The deteriorating trust of Alex Meruelo is completely why everything has gotten to this point. Losing the team and now this. The sooner the NHL tells Meruelo to take his $1 billion and walk, the better chance a new ownership group can make Coyotes 2.0 a reality.
I'm cynical enough to believe that Murello is either relieved because he can keep his billion or he was partly behind it, so now that it fails and no more Coyotes, he can claim he gave it his best, but out of his control.
@@NHLCrazy2007 very possible, but we are also dealing with government as well so the chance of mr x in some AZ gov position has a buddy named mr z who wants the land for something else and greased the palm of mr x in which mr x tells ASLD "oh they need special permits for this" prompting ASLD to cancel thus giving mr x a better chance at getting the land. @@Dratchev241 I'm really sorry to say this, but Alex Meruelo has done so much more harm than any good regarding his ownership. The guy screwed up getting the Tempe proposal approved by the voters. LOST THE TEAM. Now this about not having a zoning lawyer to cover his rear end in the event that more requirements needed to be met like, I don't know... a zoning permit for a 17,000-seat arena? C'mon. Then how he just treated the remaining employees left behind after the hockey assets were sold off. His reputation is really bad at this point and it would be best to find new ownership that wants to bring back the Coyotes.
Why would they cancel the land auction if they had more bidders with everything sorted out? Seems like there was only one bidder. A lot of distrust going on with this whole thing. Meruelo related to Fisher somehow? 😂😂
The initial media reports indicated the land auction had other bidders, so why was it canceled? If one bidder didn't follow the rules, simply reject the bid and proceed with the other bidders. Furthermore, how does someone obtain a land use permit for land they don't even own? The impression I get, is that either the reports of additional bidders were false, or someone wants to manipulate the process to give a certain bidder an advantage. If other bidders existed, then I would think they would have grounds for a legal challenge to the canceled land auction. The Coyotees owner may not be very good, but the politicians in AZ are not entirely blameless either.
good summary brodie , but you are wrong ,saying sports teams are not developers @10:12 , when coyotes owner meruelo has developed , built and owns casinos , resorts , and other commercial buildings ,, fraud and liar meruelo is a developer first and foremost , and his #1 agenda in arizona has always been building a casino ,resort and luxury apartment complex , hockey was an excuse for him to develop more buildings in phoenix metro area. he knows full well proper permits are required to develop land anywhere , he should have had his bevy of lawyers read " REZONING FOR DUMMIES .. before threatening to sue the city for his incompetence .
This is now giving me horrible flashbacks to my days as an A’s fan as this ownership has no clue what they’re doing, taking their aggression out on the city while burning its bridges at the same time and upsetting fans left right and center, I can see why Coyotes fans want Merulo out as I don’t think I could have carried on being an A’s if Fisher was still in charge and we got Howard Terminal
This is so strange. The statement from ASLD makes it seem like they are only dealing with one applicant and the auction itself is a sham. That bothered me. I think the Coyotes may have thought the land was already zoned for the type of arena they want to build and the misread is on their side. The timing makes sense that it would come this late because it likely would have been incumbent on the bidders to have the proper permits on file prior to bidding. Why should they be allowed to bid without assuring the ASLD that what they want to use the land for is permittable. I also dont see why the seller has to make sure any earlier than now that the application is in order. What i would have expected was their bid to simply be declared invalid and the auction proceed since there are other bids. At least if the fix isnt in and it's a sham. This is so weird. Everything about this situation is weird
Typical NHL shit show. This is also on Bettman for having allowed multiple slime ball owners in Arizona. That market should be a home run for the league. Hard to believe Meruelo made his money in RE development. On a side note the drawings have been out for a few months. Did anyone in local government reach out to the clueless owner and advise of a potential zoning issue?
Meruelo doesn’t know what he is doing and refuses to listen to what others tell him he needs to do. As soon as he applied to for the land he should have hired lawyers to make sure he had all his Yotes in a row. You can’t just hope that things will go your way.
I think we are overcomplicating this. The simple truth is Arizona does not trust Meruelo to pay up and they do not want to be stuck with the bill. Bodie covered this on another video but looking closer at the amusement park designation details, I feel like ASLD was not fully on board with that. In my opinion, the NHL left Phoenix begrudgingly because of the market size. Phoenix is one of the 10 biggest metro areas in the country whereas SLC does not even rank in the top 50. Phoenix is 4x the size and I don't think the NHL wanted to give up that big of a market like they had to with Atlanta without a fight. But sometimes, you just have to wave the white flag. And I think that's exactly what's happening here. NHL saw no end in sight playing in that silly college arena plus, this was likely just insurance incase the Utah team can't get out of the Jazz arena in a few years. Bottom line, I think hockey in Phoenix is done and hockey in Salt Lake City is here to stay
In Marelo's presser with Gary Bettman you could see how defensive he was when questioned by the press. I knew this guy would never get it done. Goodbye Coyotes and good riddance.
As someone who lives down here, this isn't surprising at all. This is par for the course in Arizona. Not only the state of Arizona, but the Coyotes franchise to boot. When the Coyotes came here from Winnipeg, it was proof positive that hockey can, and does, work in Arizona. Since then, ownership and management changes have come at a huge cost to the fanbase out here. They abused the goodwill so bad, fans just gave up. I know, as I had center ice season tickets for 8 years after moving out from San Jose. There is no commitment to improving the team. It's a money grab for ownership. Remember when the Coyotes had their first 'white out' playoff appearance about 12 years ago? It was essentially the Moneyball strategy, something that has become the status quo because there is no desire to win. The advertising and community involvement was sparse. When it was there, it was terrible. As for the state? The City of Glendale got a whole new entertainment district with the involvement of the Cardinals and the Coyotes. Once they got their claws into the big money Cardinals, the Coyotes became the punching bag of the city. With the constant threat of relocation for over a decade, fans finally tapped out. Myself included.
@@DANZIG138 They packed the building every night when they were in Downtown Phoenix. Did it house 16,000? No. Once they moved to a bigger buillding, it was moneyball time. The Oakland A's are a mirror reflection of the Coyotes. Get some class.
The City of Phoenix did not want to compete with another arena. They own Footprint center and make a fortune on it. Another entertainment district in Phoenix means less earnings for the city. As much as the Coyotes ownership is to blame for the situation, we can't pretend like local politics isn't a contributing factor. Cities are more interested in the bottom line than supporting teams, especially the Coyotes. Lack of local support has been an issue since the Yotes came to the valley and is a part of their departure.
Is it legal to apply for a permit on land you don’t own? Is the state going to apply for the permit on behalf of the team? Will other bidders need to have an approved permit in hand? This is convoluted.
Having land for your sports ball team isn’t a human right, Alex. The Coyotes have been a complete and utter failure for three decades. Like Atlanta, this area should be on the “DO NOT GIVE A TEAM TO THIS AREA” list.
Phoenix should now be happy being part of the Golden Knights TV territory. And Utah games will be shown also. Phoenix should embrace college hockey. Teams like Air Force, Denver, and Michigan will thrill us.
Brodie, absolutely love your reporting, been a fan for awhile now, but need to make a request of you my friend. Please do not continue to refer to the Coyotes as "his" team. The Coyotes are "OUR" team. As I'm sure you saw yesterday, reported in the Arizona Republic, this billionaire, genius businessman hadn't even consulted a zoning lawyer. Then threatened a lawsuit instead of simply admitting a mistake, and apologizing to the fans. Unforgivable. This is OUR PACK. Clearly he's the stray that we let in thinking he'd help us all. He hasn't.
i'm picking up what you're putting down. only meant it in terms of: he holds all the cards for a return, right now. but... totally understand the feelings. thanks for sharing.
Weren’t there 3 other bidders? I don’t see why they didn’t auction to them if their plans for the land didn’t require permits. Does this bode well if they want to give the Coyotes a chance? 🤷♂️
15 years from now with a new owner, I have no doubts that Arizona has a chance to come back. At this point though, I think the new team should have a different identity.
No one will waste their time and money trying to jump through the political hoops in Arizona’s corrupt bureaucracy. These events are the death of NHL in Arizona.
12/31/2027. Arena construction needs to be (at least) 50% complete by that date. If that benchmark is missed then I believe the NHL can persue other ownership groups for AZ without legal repercussions iirc.
Great news! The NHL will come back, just maybe not as soon as hoped, but they'll come back and it WON'T be with this effin' loser in charge. That's all we care about here... NO Meruelos.
False. In five years, it will cost $2 billion or more for a team and twice as much for the land and an arena. Nobody will waste their time and resources trying to get an arena and team in that state, when the politics are so corrupt and impossible to work with. This is the end of the Coyotes and the end of NHL in Arizona forever.
The Phoenix metro area is oversaturated with NFL, MLB, NBA and college sports. Not enough people here and in the state give a crap about hockey. It doesn't matter if the state gets a hockey team or not because it'll never be profitable.
Just saw that Meruello has “walked away” from Coyotes ownership. If Coyotes 2.0 happens, it won’t be with Meruello. This news was released just after a great SCF Game 7. All time news dump
For the ASLD to cancel less than a week before the auction is odd. The land can be sold before any permitting. This has happened many times before. If they cancelled months ago for this reason OK. But the timing here is very suspect by the ASLD. I know Meruelo is not easy to work with, but this looks strange.
I don't know why Meruello didn't hire Real Estate Lawyers. And also hire lobbyists to talk to local government. Either he doesn't get or not effort liquid assets. He about to lose a second hockey team.
Why didn’t the SLD require the special use permit to begin with? Could it be that the rich folks in Scottsdale with political connections are doing everything to keep the Coyotes from getting this site? I don’t blame the Coyotes for being pissed. I don’t see the Coyotes coming back. NHL should a have given Muerello the option to selling his right to build an arena and get a team back.

Quebec City built a beautiful new arena and still has no NHL team. But Bettman hates Canada.

@@NHLCrazy2007 No conspiracy theory, and I recall some reporting that there were four expected bidders (might’ve been from Brodie’s earlier video, but I could be mistaken). Personally I have no stake in the game, I live in - and am a fan of the team in - the opposite corner of the country, New Jersey. I just feel for the fans in the Phoenix area who have been on this rollercoaster for years, lost their team, and are still on the ride.

Aw, come on Alex.
The state has paid for 2 arenas for the Yotes already... why would they give tax free Theme Park status just to lose more.
My personal preference is for the Suns owner purchase the franchise from
Mr.
Just wanted to say I love this channel. Very good unbiased coverage of hockey. Keep it up!
A 3x3 hockey team is coming.

Absolute dumpster fire 🔥of an owner. The nhl was so lucky to get that team out smoothly
So nice of Arizona to change things at the last minute.
Seriously, so many people here are blaming Meruelo, when per Arizona's statement they initially *did not require* the permit to proceed with the auction in the beginning.
Meruelo sucked as a owner. Needs to go away.
Exactly.
Alex Meruelo is doing his best to bring back an expansion team to Phoenix Arizona. I wish the fans and the local media would get off his back. Show some respect to Alex Meruelo.

Better to cancel the auction now rather than proceed with the sale and deal with all the inevitable litigation over the theme park district zoning. Saves the state millions in litigation fees.

I've come to that conclusion myself... if not the state, then DEFINITELY the large majority of Phoenix does not want an NHL hockey team
@@CubeInspector Correct.
Even if the bid for the land fails, Bettman will push for redeveloping the Footprint Center in a last ditch attempt to bring the Coyotes back.

This has been huge news in Arizona since the move, should maybe someone from the State office have helped them along with the correct permit/approvals?
Meruello is trying to sabotage the whole thing.
Guarantee he is
He already has.
He doesn't want the permit, he wants it with theme park status to avoid paying taxes
Alex Murelo needs to be jail for complete hoodwinking the team staff and fanbase. He's the reason why the Coyotes were in this mess they're in. His actions show that he is NOT fit to run this business due to his incompetent.
@BrodieBrazil Thanks again for the video. The deteriorating trust of Alex Meruelo is completely why everything has gotten to this point. Losing the team and now this. The sooner the NHL tells Meruelo to take his $1 billion and walk, the better chance a new ownership group can make Coyotes 2.0 a reality.
haha i thought yotes weren't going anywhere? it must suck to be so super demented fkn stupid.
I'm cynical enough to believe that Murello is either relieved because he can keep his billion or he was partly behind it, so now that it fails and no more Coyotes, he can claim he gave it his best, but out of his control.
OR that maybe just maybe he is just that grossly incompetent that he screwed it up without thinking he should sabotage the existence of a franchise.

Get a land use attorney, not a litigator.

Not surprised at all!
Him and fisher are probably friends 😂
Good luck getting anything from the City or the State at this time.
Do a small interview with the Land Trust do we all know how it operates on a project like this
As someone who lives down here, this isn't surprising at all.
It never worked and it will never work. Never averaged over 16,000 fans in 27 years. Get a grip
@@DANZIG138 They packed the building every night when they were in Downtown Phoenix. Did it house 16,000? No. Once they moved to a bigger buillding, it was moneyball time. The Oakland A's are a mirror reflection of the Coyotes. Get some class.

Wait, what about the team in Tucson??? He's still owning that tram right??? I feel that he wants to move it to Reno where his real estate are...
Gotta move the Yotes to downtown Phoenix kids. Otherwise nothing will change.
@@noahmartin9340 Then why couldn't they stay in the Suns arena?

For the ASLD to cancel less than a week before the auction is odd. The land can be sold before any permitting. This has happened many times before. If they cancelled months ago for this reason OK. But the timing here is very suspect by the ASLD. I know Meruelo is not easy to work with, but this looks strange.
