THANK YOU for making this video! This validates every grievance I've had with CD jewel cases since before I can remember. In terms of accessible alternatives, I think paper sleeves that mimic the design of vinyl packaging are definitely a step-up from jewel cases. However, I wouldn't be opposed to the soft PPE cases becoming a second standard for CDs moving forward, considering that they're still popular enough to warrant entire departments in many big box stores.
I agree that those polypropylene cases seem like a universal step up from the jewel case, but the industry seems to answer more and more with digipaks, which are NOT an improvement but actually huge leaps in the backwards direction.
the dvd cases are called "eco cases". they...along with jewel cases, are a oil by product. thus when they're structurally thinner it cuts down on the amount of materials used to make them thus they cost less to make. its very hard to find the old style dvd cases we all used to get. what you call poly cases, they are or were meant for computer related items, promotions, library, etc...and are usually used in other countries (such as vcd's) that's why they don't have a removable tray and not clear transparent which are unattractive anyway. they can be ordered online but there's a minimum of course. i usually have new replacements on hand i get cheap off local ads, but i also pick up new or good clean used cd's from the thrift store for $1. and use those as replacements.
You and millions upon millions of others. It's like they are made so poorly so the consumer has to buy more of them. I do wonder what kind of recourse there is for consumers that are being ripped off by these pieces of garbage.
fYI the transparent plastic that jewel cases are traditionally made out of is polystyrene, which is the same stuff styrofoam is made out of but in a more compressed and transparent form.
This video great, thank you!!!! I am wanting to make digital copies of my music for friends and family and this had everything I needed. Jewel cases make me so dang angry.
It's not a weird obsession at all. It's very important and relatable. Lots of people have a collection of CD jewel cases full of cracks , and some with broken hinges, and they also have a collection of DVDs in their DVD cases that never got cracked. It's really strange. I don't know why they keep doing jewel cases. Those poly cases and paper/cardboard cases look really cool. I wish they were the industry standard. And environmental impact is an important factor for me. I want to help the environment where-ever possible. So thankyou for including that.
I have often wondered why these hard plastic cases are still be used to store cd's. The little tabs and hinges are always breaking and when a product is poorly designed it should be replaced with something that is better. There was a car called the Edsel that was so full of design flaws that it was discontinued after only about a year. These pieces of crap that hold my valuable cd's are a joke that need to go. Has the backlash against this garbage not been strong enough? I can't think of anything else that is a storage device that is so poorly suited for the job it is supposed to do but often doesn't in very short order because of how poorly designed and constructed it is.
I'm about to release a CD And i'm in a big drama right now Should i just release it digitally? Or it would be better to make it physical... i mean physical, jewel case is the only way right?
I think most people just stream music nowdays, but if your audience is large enough to support a physical release, I'd say go for it. The nice thing about physical, at least CDs, is that they use a fixed sample rate, so the audio quality is pretty much always guaranteed. Not that you can't have a high-quality digital release, but the most popular streaming and download services max out at 320kbps, so there are plenty of digital-only releases that can't be found in lossless, and that sucks. Maybe also consider a CD exclusive bonus track, or a free sticker/poster if you want to nudge people in that direction.
It's disappointing that these poly cases aren't as common as either DVD cases or jewel cases. Hell, even when Blu-Ray and 4K came out, they didn't bother to use these cases. I'm thinking about rectifying that by putting my media in the Poly cases and make covers for them.
Why couldn't the music companies distribute their CDs in dvd cases? Instead we still use those stupid jewel cases that makes u wanna crescent kick em into a trash can everytime the hinge snaps.
So simple, so compact and so accessible. I hope CDs never go out of production
CD forever
Optical media bad.

This is a question I had since dvd cases became prominent.

Why the voice sound like tjat
I just don't add too much pressure to the spindle and I don't move the disc until I get it out.
Super helpful
But where did you find the cases you spoke of at the end of the video?

Artists should always have physical media for sale as they make pennies off of streaming.

i have a green tinted ringo starr jewel case
all of this despite damaging the booklet 100% of the times...
you should've mentioned digipak tbh.
it never got better than the jewel case. dvds should have used jewel boxes instead of those ridiculous boxes. why fix it if it aint broken???
I don't know where you live but where I have lived for the last 66 years the jewel cases are crap that should have never been allowed onto the market.
