What a summer it has been! As usual, it flew by far too fast. But, one of the good things about adding on a side project to our already jam packed summer is that we were able to get up to Ash River 5 times to complete a little mini kitchen renovation at the cabin. It was mostly work, but we certainly made time to play as well! We're going to call this kitchen "done for now" as there are always a thousand ideas running through our heads on what else we can do!
It was forecasted to be a beautiful weather weekend, but we only had 1 day up there, so we finished up the kitchen as fast as humanly possible and got out on the lake to enjoy essentially our last day of summer vacation. We had a ton of fun on the water exploring some of our favorite islands, cliff jumping, cooking up delicious food, eating dinner in the middle of Kabetogama watching the sunset and the moonrise, and just having lots of fun and lots of laughs! A perfect way to end our summer 2024.

Love how everything turned out. The clock is so cute, love the color. Your cabin reminds me of a place in Michigan where my family would go on vacation. It was on a lake and the cabins were built on stilts with no insulation. You could see outside from the knots in the wood. It was heated by a wood burning fireplace. The scenery was beautiful with lots of trees that shaded the screened in porch.

As a loyal cone and nutty needle, I thought I'd drop in and see what you're doin' today 🌲 Hi Jenna and Ted, great to see you. I enjoyed very much seeing the whole family together having fun and playing and also working on the family cabin. I am not at all a fan of painting, especially ceilings. It made a big difference with the white ceiling; visually opened the area up quite a bit. It looks great, you both did an excellent job!! Jenna, you are always so creative and your projects (clock, light and frames) are perfect finishing touches. With these videos, time and again I am reminded how absolutely beautiful that area is, just stunning. It was fun seeing Ted and the kids on the rope swing and the kids out enjoying themselves in their boats. Finley is a character and a real cutie, she's a charmer 😉 I assume CJ is done with his job as school has started up again. God has richly blessed you guys with a beautiful, loving family and an area rich in beauty and benefits. I got the impression that Finley may not be aware but she shows signs of being way more in touch with life than others. Like sitting in the boat reading. She may not being doing it consciously but I got the feeling she was there because of the memories she's making. Times on the boats, family bonding and enjoying nature are lost on many her age. She seems aware that this is a special part of life that will be with her forever. I sincerely hope you and she take this as a compliment but there aren't many that will hang out with the "Rents and be helpful when they are her age. She's going places, maybe not publicly but she's going where she will thrive or maybe she will stay since she's thriving there.
She is wise beyond her years! ❤️ At 13, she goes above and beyond with helping our family! She’s definitely going places! ❤️

Hey guys! It looks so amazing! My favorite part is how much fun you have together. That white ceiling was a perfect touch and really lightened the room up. We have a love hate relationship with paint. I love how clean a freshly painted room looks but the prep and cleaning can be mind numbing. My favorite part is peeling the tape off! So happy to see you guys relax, know CJ and Finley will keep to busy with sports, I remember those days. Now l keep busy with my nieces two boys as their Uncle JoJo now that Liam is 10 and Sawyer just turned 5 yesterday. And now they will have a new little kiddo come next March and I get to start over with a newborn. I was impressed by the way the ceiling turned out as much as l would not have painted over knotty pine my Aunts home had it in there finished basement and we kept it the same when we moved in the house after my dad passed and we inherited it great childhood memories in Chicago. But l do understand your reasoning with the bare wood and matching great decorating skills Jenna. You guys also Bring back memories of the rope swing mine was on the Kankakee river at my Aunts place until the river took it away when the river flooded. Sad loss but the memories never fade. I laughed so hard with Ted and his hat and ears at the end. I see your family always laughing and having fun, that’s what is always enjoyable about your videos. See you now the next one. The patch jobs and unfinished wood just wouldn’t have looked right trying to match the stain. We love how much light it brought into that space though! 🤍

Wow, the map of Lake Kabtogama really brings back memories. I have sailed and flown out of that lake in the 80's. Even had my girlfriend's mother get bitten by a Muskie on that lake. It is such fun and such a beautiful place. Also brings back memories of Crow Wing Scout Reservation and summer camps.

@@TheLiFeInPines don't be afraid it is amazing to watch them spread their wings and grow. I so blessed to see them independent and on their own. I know I taught them the essential cooking cleaning and seperating laundry before washing 😆 🤣 It is a little harder now that my daughter just gave me my first grandbaby and I am not right there but if it is in the cards the will be closer.

Can I ask why you're painting that beautiful wood? Yes, I love wood so I have an issue with it but I just wanna know it's your decision
We knew that we would get some grief for painting the wood. 🫣 But, we tore down a chimney and had to patch in the ceiling with unfinished wood (and there was unfinished wood underneath a heat shield from the old propane lights) We knew it would be almost impossible to match the original stain. So paint just made it easier.
For such a small space there was just too much wood and it felt dark and enclosed. The white helped to brighten the area and tone down the wood just a bit! 🤍

As a carpenter, why do people paint stained wood?
Good question… and normally we wouldn’t. However, we removed a chimney which required patching the wood ceiling with raw pieces and there were also raw wood patches where heat resistant panels used to be (for propane lights) and with the natural aging of the sealer, it would’ve been impossible to match it perfectly without sanding down the entire ceiling and restaining and sealing it. We kept everything else we could, though!
