Easy Walstad Betta Fish Tank Setup (Month 4) - No CO2, Liquid Fertilizer, Or Root Tabs!
Welcome back to our aquatic journey! In this detailed 4-month update, dive deep into the life and environment of my Walstad betta fish tank. Watch as I explore the health, habitat, and progress of Khuli, my charismatic betta fish, and his vibrant tank mates in our low-tech, budget-friendly setup. The Walstad method, which utilizes cheap top soil and gravel capped with sand alongside fast-growing plants for natural filtration, proves perfect for beginners looking for effective yet economical aquarium setups.
This video covers a range of topics, starting with a health check on Khuli, who had a rough start this month, raising concerns about fin rot or other infections. After consultations and observations, discover the intriguing changes in his coloration and health. Witness the stunning transformation compared to Stitch, another betta whose dramatic color change in just 5 weeks offers hope and excitement about Khuli's own changes.
Delve into the vibrant life within the tank, from the flourishing shrimp population, now in its multiple generations, to the mysterious activities of the zebra nerite snail and the ever-busy Amano shrimp. Learn about the specific feeding strategies employed to support the unique needs of the Walstad method, including the use of Fluval Bug Bites and NTLabs Nano Tropical foods, along with a treat of bloodworms, and how these choices influence the nutrient dynamics in the tank.
Further into the video, explore the lush plant life that forms the backbone of this ecosystem. From the trimming of Rotala Orange Juice, Rotala Rotundifolia, and Ludwigia mini super red, to the resilience and growth of the S Repens and the charming yellow tint of Eleocharis Pusilla, each plant tells a story of survival and adaptation. The video also highlights the explosive growth of Salvinia, emphasizing its role in nutrient absorption and its response to seasonal changes.
Maintenance tips are not left out as I discuss the routine care needed to keep the tank in prime condition, including trimming schedules, water topping, and monitoring with a TDS pen. Water parameters are crucial, and I provide insights into how ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates are maintained at optimal levels through natural plant filtration, thus reducing the need for frequent water changes.
Lastly, catch a glimpse of future plans as I discuss building a shrimp tank rack and experimenting with new lighting solutions, like the SEAOURA light, which promises efficiency and budget-friendliness for fellow Walstad method enthusiasts.
Join us for this immersive update packed with tips, observations, and a true passion for natural aquarium keeping. Whether you are a seasoned aquarist or just starting, this video will provide valuable insights and inspiration to enhance your own aquatic endeavors. Thank you for watching, and I look forward to sharing more of this wonderful aquatic world with you. Enjoy and have a fantastic day!

My veiltail betta's fins get raggedy too. The parameters are fine so I have doubts that it's rot. I just keep an eye on them if they might get out of hand; maybe treating him with meds but I'd rather not. Glad your guy doesn't have fin rot.
Seems like the biggest issue people bring up is water parameters in dirted tanks. Bet your stems are doing the trick to eliminate anything developing. How's the PH in that tank? I was thinking the use of root tabs temporarily with the low level plants might help til they reach the nutrients but hasn't taken too much time so maybe not worth the effort!

      Cheers mate :).
Yea I have meds in my supply stash incase rot sets in but I watch him every day, I think its just one of those things where i'm paranoid so I see things that arnt there.
The pH of that tank was holding at around 6.8 but I havent been checking much recently in all honesty as it was so consistent.
