*DISCLAIMER* - By doing this video, I am not sponsored or paid by nor am I in any way affiliated with the MTV Viacom company. These are simply my personal experiences with a show I love and hope to find others in the heavy metal community who want to share their memories and experiences as well. Thank you.
*DISCLAIMER #2* I got the information wrong on how or why the show ended. It wasn't because of Scott Weiland or STP. In fact, the whole thing with Scott Weiland was resolved when Riki called him and apologized for the small thing he said on air (and it was, indeed, small). The reason the show ended was because of something to do with Viewer Mail. Riki answered it honestly, he got a number wrong and the mail came back to MTV. When they read the mail, they were pissed, and unceremoniously ended the show. For the truth on that, watch the Bonus Special linked down below.
This week, I give you my memories of watching Headbangers Ball on Saturday Nights. I also tell you about how it ended and how I and other fans felt when it ended. Join me as we slip into the time machine of my Gen X teenage rock years and let me tell you about Saturday Nights with "THE BALL"!!!

48y/o here and Headbanger’s Ball was the best thing going for metalheads back then. I recorded it if I couldn’t watch it. I still have those VHS tapes! 😅
I'm 47, so I think that's amazing! It was such a fun time to get some snacks (chips, Coke/Pepsi, and Slim Jims for my friend and me) and rock out to our favorite genre. We didn't know what to think when they took the show away from us so suddenly and unceremoniously.
I'm glad there are clips and episodes here on UA-cam to look back on. I'm also glad that many like you have documented the show and held on to it. Thank you so much for commenting!
I watched headbangers ball from '88-92 when I was in high school. That was the only place to see the videos of the heavier bands at the time. I seem to remember that the first part of the show was more glam/hair oriented with the heavier stuff toward the middle and end. If you wanted to see Anthrax, Metal Church, Testament, Iron Maiden etc., Headbangers Ball was the only way to do it on TV. That was also my first introduction to bands like Kreator and Nuclear Assault. I still remember those days in my room with the lights out watching HBB on my 13" TV.
Good memory. That was how I remembered the layout of the show, too. It was how I discovered Danzig, Type O Negative, Pantera, and a few others I can't even think about right now.
I miss the show still to this day
It really was a great show. When VH1 yanked "That Metal Show" off the air, I lost hope for us having any kind of show that showcased our kind of music.
I miss headbangers ball so much !! I am hard rock and heavy metal 🎸 fan. !! So it was paradise to me to have a channel for fans.
I hated it when they took that away from us. Now, they don't have any music at all. That's why I watch MTV Classic, now.
I used to Watch The Head Bangers Ball, from 1987 to 1993. it was awesome I discovered many Bands from it.
I did a Video on the Head bangers Ball also. and even recorded it on Cassette Tape 88 to 92. and had 14 VHS Tapes of it.
Nice! It was definitely an event for us metal heads.
Headbangers ball on Saturday and 120 minutes on Sunday
Yep! I loved both shows. I hated it when they tried to replace Headbangers Ball with Superock. That sucked so hard!
I would stay up in front of my VCR recording my favorite videos. I remember Adam Curry and Ricky Rachman. I loved making VHS mix tapes. I really wish I still had them.
My best friend at the time had so many recorded episodes. We'd "pregame" with the older episodes before watching the newer ones that same night.
It was an Event I wish still happened and remember WHEN it existed you never knew WHO was gonna be on there😊
Yes. I adored it!
Back when the "M" still stood for music television.
I say that all the time.
When MTV was still music television headbangers ball and closet classics
Yes! I miss it so much!
Yeagh, set the VCR and get ready to record! Check out the 20th anniversary special with all the past hosts!
Oh wow! I have to check that out. Thanks for the heads up, hon!
@@Gen_X_Rosey Hey, nice, it's a awesome episode, enjoy! {;o)
My first time hearing TooL was on HBB we lived for HBB in the 90s🤟
Yes! That was how I heard them, too! We were introduced to some of the best music in HBB.
@RunninMom76 Absolutely. I may be biased, but I truly believe the 90s was the best time for music. Thanks for the video🤟
@@michaelmyers7425 No problem! Thank you for watching it!
I saw White Zombie with the original lineup at rickey's cat house I think they might have been filming for a video
That's pretty cool! I loved when they filmed the show at Riki's house. That was pretty cool. Thank you for commenting so much!
With the Ca-ball
All these old MTV video shows have become iconic in their own right. So much classic footage.
I wholeheartedly agree. We definitely had some of the best stuff to watch back then.
For me HBB eclipsed anything else to do on a Sat. night
Absolutely! Totally agree!
it was nothing but crap most of the time. I remember almost every week they'd play Signs by Tesla. That is like, the most un-metal song ever. Once grunge really took off they'd play stuff like Pearl Jam... also not metal. Occasionally you'd get something like Morbid Angel or Slayer but that was rare. But I gotta give HBB credit for showing me some bands I probably would have found anyway.
Some folks consider it crap, and some don't. It's really relative, depending on who ya ask. I didn't agree with some of it (their music choices), but I still listen to Corrosion of Conformity's "Dance of the Dead" because HBB played it so damned much, it feels weird NOT to hear it. Even all these years later! Thanks for hangin' out and interacting, hon!
Adam curry was the worst
Yeah, I wasn't crazy about him either. But he hated Riki for "stealing" his job.
