He had a really bad infection he caught on their Tour through south america a few years ago, wich also damaged his lungs. He almost died. So I think that is why he does not sound as good theese days.

Look at the song name, the album covers, lucifer incestus and pestocalypse, it is definitely joke and mockery laden, the delivery is dry and serious. That's part of the theme. They ultimately want it to be musically serious (compared to the theme), and it's no different with abbath.
