Looking good friend, a nice tip for increasing a little space is to cut the bottom off the whistle and put something inside, your still able to use it by placing a finger on the bottom.
Nice video! Just subscribed. I did wonder however if dipping just the tip of a match in wax would be sufficient to make it waterproof. It seems too me that if ANY part of a paper or wooden match comes into contact with water, then the entire match, including the head, is liable to get wet because the moisture will wick its way up inside the wax. Better perhaps to melt some wax in a pot and soak each one completely.
Thanks for your response. I was thinking about water and couldn't see how you could boil it with branches, but a grill makes perfect sense. If you use hickory or mesquite branches for your grill it might add some nice flavor too.:)
The Altoids tin is a good mental exercise in survival preparedness, but how practical is it to limit your survival to a 3-13/16" x 2-7/16" x 3/4" space? Have you tested it out to see if you can survive with only whats in that tin? If you plan on using the tin as a container to cook in maybe rivet a folding type handle to the outside and spray paint the bottom with a high heat black paint. A folding knife would be a better choice as there is almost no handle/blade on that CRKT.
Be sure and check to make sure that Nanolight works. I got one and it just stopped working after a couple months, even with new batteries. Otherwise, awesome kit. Thanks for sharing.
Hahaha! Yeah, I was looking for my $20 bill that I usually keep in it but I couldn't find it in time for filming [I musta spent it... I had a credit card that lost it's static]. I might put some quarters and some $1 bills in there too...
Thanks for your comments! I plan on doing bushcrafting type videos of my survival kits in action but I'm waiting on a nice camera with auto-focus and more free time. No I don't plan on purifying water in the tinfoil, it's primary purpose is cooking. The coffee filter coupled with the purification tablets and MRE beverage bag are my primary water purification methods. To cook with branches one could simply lay out the wood in a pattern similar to that of a grill. Any other questions/comments? :)
True you wouldn't want to baton a folding knife, but I doubt you could baton the RSK MK5 either (would make a good video to prove me wrong). Using the tin to purify water is as practical as using an easy bake oven to make one cookie. The foil might do a couple boilings of water but will eventually fail, while a tin sprayed with high heat paint will last considerably longer. How can you use branches as a container to cook (would also make a good video)?
Thanks for your questions! These are commonly asked questions for this type of kit, some of which I answered in the video. A creative/trained person can survive on nothing but the trash they come across so yes this tin greatly aids in survival. No, it would be pointless to cook in this tin; I would use either the tin foil or branches. No, a folding knife is the worst choice for a survival knife, the locking mechanism could fail when batoning wood, the handle can be extended with cordage. Thanks!
I reckon you could make a wrap of waxed paper (ie Warburtons Bread wrapper for example) before applying the gaffer tape mesel :o)~ just tension it right for ..... erm ..... slideability .... simples
