- Grace VanderWaal performed on the Elkhorn Stage at the Railbird Festival in Lexington KY. She was a ball of energy and fun, holding her audience in the palm of her hand.
Apart from her new music and a few older favorites she performed two covers we haven’t heard before, plus Billy Joel’s Vienna that she first sang on Wednesday this week at the introduction of “Waste my Time”. And she even suggested we might not like it when she sings covers. Silly girl! There is no song so good that it can’t be made better by being sung by Grace!
One of these new covers was “Elenore” by the Turtles. Not that obscure to my generation, but apparently very much so to Grace’s.
The fun she’s having performing it is contagious.
Oh, and the style she chose for her performance… Oh là là!
Sorry for the shakes and the sometimes bad framing. I very much tried to enjoy her performance which sometimes interferes with handling of the camera.
So, yeah, I finally got to see Grace live for the first time. But certainly not for the last.
I may have some some improvement on the shakes when I’m home and have all my tools and speedy internet again.

One of the most notable things about an artist, of course, besides the fundamentals of vocal talent and other people, is her posture on stage, form and dynamics of the performance, and she does very well. The band has a very good melody and the music is excellent. Professionalism, dedication and commitment define this work, congratulations and "success always" !!!

I haven't watched this since shortly after you posted it. OMG what a great performance Grace gave - she was totally amped up and having so much fun! She looked beautiful and sounded great, and it was well worth the cross country trip to witness Grace's 2019 return to the big stage! Great video!

I hope no one resents and hate on Grace if she ever does a mistake. People painting a perfect image of someone in their mind and then expecting them to stay way forever is just terrible. Remember! Humans aren't perfect.

I loved the Turtles when I was a boy. I hear Tina informs Grace of things she's read or seen and there has been a number of people suggesting Grace look at old 60s songs (I believe old songs have kept Miley's career going in the last year) There have been lots of one hit wonders in the last 70 years but I believe the best ones came from Garage bands of the 60s and Grace has a bunch of them to explore if she wants to. I used to be so antsy for new songs that I was actually disappointed when Grace did a cover instead of showing us a new song but I've calmed down and realize it's a gift to watch her do anything

Cover more than one year ago. Her live show is a perfect prove for a
well seasoned artist.
I like to quote Grace herself from AGT audition time: I hope there is more to come.
I see "so much more than this", is coming from this new generation of talent I haven't see since the Monterey Pop festival on June, 16th., 17th., 1967', When I was18 years old. 2nd. Row When the Momma's and Poppa's were on. Grace has that happy innocence that Michelle Phillip's had back in the day. Of course I know that back then things were different. And Grace is the ultimate center of this concert, but people at or around my age can relate to the music of the past, as I am sure Grace proven this to my generation.

Somehow Mr Cowell & Col. agreed by contract (a bit strong head) when she insisted (otherwise she'll look for other companies willing) she'll have a bit free hand to her artistry (genius) + of course consensus. For now Its working. If she i believe, incredibly chose these Cover Songs she's an Enigma! I Hope she'll never be 'ruined' (listen & hold to family) i gonna cry.. gosh!

That came out of nowhere. Hope she shares how she decided too cover these songs.
I love her willingness to publicly perform such a wide range of songs. It's too bad that what many of us like in her will frustrate some fans because they would rather she stay in a single genre.
People will always love her for one or two particular things while others will love everything she touches and that is what makes up our fan clubs. The one or two things people are usually the ones commenting on her sudden growth, lol. The diversity of fan clubs frustrating for some while others enjoy the different perspectives of the members. Even here away from the facebook and twitter groups people come to these videos to question someones opinion while others come to see another point of view or if they've missed something. I love her and this diversity
I think that is aimed at the likes of me. I don't mind seeing her perform a wide range of songs, but I should be allowed to say when a song, like Best Friend, is so bad not even her vocals can save it.
Also I’m really happy she released the brilliant Waste My Time now. I was afraid she would it would be Ul Get Bored which would have meant two poor songs in a row.
ikr.. how the process to select amongst.. Mils of songs in millenia. How deep is her Music Library? Or goes to a certain..tempo? We may never know but its just..incredible!
@@valleyem1 Sorry if my comment came across as criticism. It was meant simply as an observation and opinion. It reminds me of another band I like (and hate) and singer that will occasionally leave their fans scratching their heads: Faith No More and an awesome singer, Mike Patton.
Disagree violently about You'll Get Bored. That's Grace as she breathes and lives. Waste my Time OTOH, especially the way it was produced: Way too poppy for me. But it's still Grace singing it. And the lyrics have her spark.
But then, we all have or own boat to float.

In Vegas only a few kids recorded small snippets of Grace performing, thank God we got the One and Only song recording from that. Most of the videos we got from Vegas were people in the main lobby saying how much they loved Grace but they didn't video Grace once they got in to the show. In 2017 there were a few times we got very little from a Grace performance, the WE Days sometimes we just what Tina filmed. After that facebook and twitter asked people to video what they can from Grace's performances because of how little we got from that first year. People who went through the frustrations of nothing coming out of her shows back then appear to have more patience than some of the newer people here. Hopefully we won't get people saying to themselves "I'm not going to video this because it will probably look or sound like crap" then we will be back to were have nothing again

think about it the drums are right in front of the phones mic and the speakers for the microphone Grace is using are off to the side. Nothing can be done about that except film closer to the speakers.
I was there. She sounded great in person!
No one has yet to figure out how to mic/mix Grace live.
NOTE: Railbird had professional TV Cameras in towers opposite the Stage, and her image on Screens on each side of the Stage. I'm PRETTY sure we'll see a DVD/BluRay for sale eventually. And... I was there, on the left, in front, under the banner! Has Anyone NOTICED those COOL heels? They looked like little crystal balls.
Railbird would make a pretty cool TV Special, btw. The higher quality audio would be AWESOME.

@@HotelPapa100 That's a very good recording... But I want people here to understand that LIVE does not have the Vocals dropping out or being attenuated! It sounded perfect. I finally got my videos off my cell... and I'll consider sharing if I think it contributes. I used a BLU phone, not as good as an i10, but I was a bit surprised the audio did not drop out as much as expected. It's not as good as the others, including yours. But I do have on video her going stage right to be greeted by her group with her, at the end of the show. Maybe we can figure out who they are. I was in the 1st row on the left, with my Autistic Sister standing under the Tall Speakers.
I do want to share a Panorama of Railbirds in the Parking Area, or anything relevant. I'll post later on Grace Vanderwaal News fansite on Facebook, when I can. There is also some pre-show pics from the grove on the extreme left that show the growing crowd. It might be important for the archives. I'll look on whether strangers are too exposed or not. I'm more worried about the Rules of Railbird, however, than Grace's people.

But I generally don't like the sound mix too well they use on her live music.

It's also about my position in the crowd. I was a Railbird, close up, and near a bass woofer, with mediocre recording equipment. I got the impression that many of the more recent indoor gigs had better sound mix, especially for positions more typical for the majority of the crowd. Houston, Austin, El Rey sounded decent.
@@HotelPapa100 I will be honest with you, Grace's more recent songs, which due to their arrangements demand more aural attention are virtually unintelligible due to the naff sound. In most cases the drum-kit is drowning her out. Worse those delicate nuances of her vocals we all love are grunged, else trailed off. The nd result of all this is that as far as the live - the reason we love Grace -performances are concerned it is not worth listening to them. The VEVO offerings do not really do her justice. The initial impact she had on all of us has been relinquished to mediocre coverage. No one is going to like me saying this, but that band around her is totally wrong for what she is doing. They are neither one thing nor the other, and seem to lack the subtlety Grace and her music desperately needs.
@@strongangel Wow. That's harsh. But you do have a point there. It hit home when I read the raving comments on Grace's finale on 'Broke'; where she sings a cappella. Everyone raved about that. It doesn't get any more voice-centric than that.
Now Grace LIKES a somewhat more arranged sound to her music. Let's hope they develop a middle ground in the future.
I have also noticed that the more recent concerts, starting with Austin, seemed to show more care to mixing.
@@HotelPapa100 I didn't mean for it to sound harsh, it is just for my money Grace is too much now a bit part in her own set up. The band are good people I know, but there is something going on in s much as the mystery and beauty of Grace's songs, and her delivery of them are becoming second best to a formulaic way of gigging them. An example is the drumming, which in imho is not in the right style, being far to clunky and rockish. The kit needs leverage, with more emphasis on percussive touches; thhe sound is far too metallic and is clashing with Grace's sweet tones, some congo/bongo type sounds would be far more appropriate, else the type of thing going on in some of Billie Eilish's songs, which use less intrusive sounds to create a wall of rhythm, as opposed to a driving beat.
Her Mic should have been higher. Can't barely hear her over the band.

Actually no. It was a decent point-and-shoot camera. But the mike IS pretty crappy, and I wasn't positioned for good audio.

I know it Grace, I was there when it FIRST came out. I loved the Turtles, they were so good with songs that had beautiful melodies. I don't think they are given their due, they came along at the wrong time. A year earlier and they might have been huge. I went from these guys to The Allman Bros Band. Your mic should have been turned up, but I also think it is the phone, all phones, not specifically this particular one. They all seem to have problems getting human voices to be loud enough.

Seems like I often see a person on stage, and sometimes another in the audience area, recording Grace with professional video equipment but then I never see those videos anywhere. Wonder what that's all about? Not to knock this video, it is excellent quality and I realize you have problems with the sound that are beyond your control.
Yeah, it's a pity. In the organizers Mashup/Report on the festival, Grace got all of one second, split in two clips.
She is just GREAT to see and hear. I can listen to her all day.

Yes the sounds not great, it's recorded on a phone close to the front of the stage in front of the drums. To get better audio you need to stand further back , usually nearer the mixing desk, or to the side in front of the speaker stacks. Great song choice grace.
I have heard that recommendation before, to get a listening spot close to the mixing desk.
If I ever get to do this again, I will definitely follow along for a few concerts for different roles. (Good audio, good video, and most importantly *enjoy Grace undiluted.*
BTW: That wasn't a phone. I used a Panasonic Lumix vz 202; but its built in mic is pretty crappy, too, though others have commented that it does less of the dynamic compensation that often happens with phone audio.
That I added a makeshift wind sound suppressor probably didn't help either.
@@HotelPapa100 Don't know the camera, but zooming in on the picture will usually zoom in on the sound as well. Sounded like you wanted to be nearer the sides to get some of the mid range and treble.
@@trevorwhiteman8056 It's a simple point and shoot with a decent zoom and two individual small mics for stereo. Don't think there's any zooming of sound going on, unless they can do that with some processing gimmikry of the two data streams.
As for positioning: you take what you get, if you still want to be a railbird, while at the same time giving the kids present a good spot.

She is so great, but the quality of the videos is not good at all. It's a tragic loss.

I'm afraid you're out of luck if tattoos are a problem for you. Grace has tattoos. You can even see the elephant tattoo she has on her right arm in this video.
@@HotelPapa100 I would have left him alone thinking that Grace is this good girl. I've been asked for years to draw things for friends tattoo and I won't do it because I think most art looks like crap on the arm or back. My daughter has some and they look terrible

@@Calers-gu1ib having tattoos doesn't make Grace not a "good girl", but I suppose some people might think differently. As for the art not looking good, that might be true for some things, but Grace's tattoos so far have been tasteful
