Singer-Songwriter Grace VanderWaal rocks students at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo (a polytechnic college) on May 31, 2019 in California's central coast, with an end-of-semister free concert! Grace performed 15 songs in less than an hour (12 originals and 3 covers) and including two of her stunningly beautiful brand new unreleased originals!! This is Grace at her best. Her unique vocals and effervescent personality are only matched by her unparalleled writing abilities.

oh my, my, contemporary jazz with the Grace touch of originality Carly Simon, Carol King, Sarah McLaughlin, Karen Carpenter, Ella oh my God completely different level of writing and melody, impressive at fifteen let alone any age. Kudos to her family and handlers for applying the Jake brake to her career ( no radio promo and limited releases) allowing her to grow and cultivate her talents naturally the world might not know it yet but this kid is a generational talent being quietly honed and matured LOL it is kind of scary.

Even though Grace reminds me of other artists like Amy Winehouse and on this song Gwen Stefani she’s also just herself, too. It appears she’s resisting the music industry to funnel her into their vision of how to make her into a hit maker to fill their pockets. I see a lot of criticism without thinking. This old roadie sees some problems with sound but remember this is outside and the song she is singing is really a night club over the piano kind of song. she is a crazy good lyricist considering her age. love it!
Your right did you see the Slipper Club Video of this song ? (although the sound was a problem there also) I've seen Grace live twice , including her opening for Florence + the Machine the other night , video's do her no justice .
Definitely sound problem, voice doesn't seem very strong tho

The song is a wonderful piece of Grace writing. Loved hearing it. But... I don't know if this is a fact of life of this type of recording, but the drums and keyboard were overpowering. Did it sound like that in the crowd? This is such a chanteuse type of song - that's the way Grace wrote it and sings it. But she lets in too much percussion and keyboard. I bet if she went back to the way she did Light the Sky on AGT, with that very minimal drum set and soft keyboard, her voice would come through a lot better.
Anyone agree?
When the song finally gets published, that will be the definitive statement of what the vibe of this song is intended to be. A wonderful word -- chanteuse. I think it is spot on.
@@thebeanpot- I'm glad the word chanteuse exists. And we see that Grace has a mastery of so many styles. Here and when she sings Valerie she shows as a chanteuse. But she's certainly not one when singing Escape My Mind!
It is very difficult to balance vocals with instruments on a live stage. The Acoustics are horrible. Also keep in mind it was recorded with a cell phone. I also believe since this song has not been published there is no backtrack to give it a fuller and professional sound. We just have to wait for the studio version.
@@edreyes5500 Thanks. Makes sense, especially for an outdoor stage. Grace's 2016 cover of One and Only had a great balance of instruments and vocals, but that was on a Las Vegas stage, with the top-level sound crew who knew the venue expertly.
@@edreyes5500 Yes, some things to consider: (1) I was not plugged into the audio mixer, I was recording with a mic between and below the various speakers; (2) the audio compression in the camera attenuates the overall sound to prevent overloading and clipping, as the volume was VERY loud; (3) the acoustics and available equipment for a show like this are limiting, as it not intended to be a recording session, just a fun jam, which it definitely was. This song is going to be stunning once released, I have no doubt.

How did the crowd reacted to Grace there? Seems almost all were students about 18-20 something yo, in a range we could say is not usual for Grace. Were everybody enjoying it as much as it seems to be captured in your recording?
I could not judge the back of the crowd but everyone around me was really into it and making glowing comments, singing along, etc.

@@ericmichaels9659 yes, absolutely right, what you say'ed about the great Song and Grace's talent and skills she got by nature. I am a Musician since 1987 and wrote a hand full "better" songs. So she makes me feel like a less/bad talented Songwriter :-D . And cause I don't speak English very well, (I am from Germany) its not that easy with good English Lyrics for me. what I mean is, Grace grow up, luckily, with the "right" language, so that she can spreed her talent easily over the hole world. And that's more than good and important. We need more hand made music from young talented people to inspire children and teenagers. So maybe they can experience, how great it is to play an instrument. Grace is a phenomenon, especially for her age in many ways.

about the chords: Here again, thank you for your professional analysis and thoughts concerning the chords and chord order. I agree with that. it's done so well :-) . - PS: The version I wrote down is just to lead back to the Event at the Slipperroom NY 2.21.19. At least as far as the chords are concerned. Of course, I can compromise, as speed, added fill ins, and minor chord changes have changed in subsequent performances. The version from the Slipperroom Event, in my opinion, is more beautiful (no fill ins, and from my point of view the nicer end). PS: I hope Grace will release a final version for us. Which can then be finally written down ^^.

Not a reintroduction in any sense, and not a "stage". It was a free open air performance at a school quad. Wail till the song is released, or check out her shows with Florence and the Machine.

@@RunUphillBackwards Fredee it is not the song, it is the production. I have just got here from Billy Eilish doing Bellyache ( a million + views on a similar stage says it all). There is no way it is a better song than this... or Billie a better performer, but the difference was the production. The drum arrangements in BE's songs are better, sparser touches and more interesting for that; the guitar work the same. Grace is surrounded by people who are IMHO not on the right wave length for what Grace is writing and singing. Admittedly BE's brother is the genius behind her material, but Grace deserves a more credible backing than she is getting this past year and a half. I am a percussionist btw, speciality bongos (west style). Grace first interested me because her songs were a percussionists dream. They are not drum kit songs for the most part.

What sucks is fans who can't handle the idea of Grace maturing and moving on past the ukulele. This song is jazzier but by no means do I expect she will get bogged down in that style. She just is expanding her horizons and doing it her way.
This is not jazz. It is still pop with a swing and some musically slightly changed chord arrangement. But I would never call this even light jazz or jazz of any kind. It is still pop. Maybe soft pop?
