Here's a short video about using an API KH test kit.
Take your number of drops and multiply it by 17.86 to give you a total ppm. This is how you can estimate how much carbonate is in your water.
Where did you get this number from? I was wondering how to get a more precise ppm number instead of "3 drops" which = 0-50ppm on the test result card...
@@TheGreatJustino1
One degree KH is equal to 17.9 mg/I (ppm) CaCO3. It's also measured in degrees. The degree symbol may be replaced with a d (ie. 2 dKH).
I have a different calcium test kit but I tried doing what these people were saying and I used 20 ml of aquarium water and then did the instructions normally and then I also tried doing 20 mL of water but then using four times the amount of reagent one and two before adding the drops of the third which turns the final color. When I did the test with 5 mL of water it took one drop to get the color changed (20ppm or less) when I did the test with 20 mL of water it took five drops with the first way and four drops with the second way so I'm wondering if my water actually has about 20ppm of calcium
Bro thank you so much cuz the instructions with the kit or mad confusing!
Very good and funny videos bring a great sense of entertainment!
Yes thank you my gh I was just adding a bunch never changed was super confused
Excellent job brother 👏
Thank you!
This is good to know. Thank you.
Thanks very helpful
Very helpful. Thank you!
Good video. 📺👍😎
Thanks
How much hardness should water be for discus fish?
What I want to know is where I can get that nail polish.
i put 4 drops in; water finally changed to pale yellow. How much hardness is in my water?
how much hardness should be in my water?
Is my water fine if one drop changed to the right color? We are not understanding this
It would indicate very low KH.
@@DanHiteshew-oneandonly so what do i add?
@@leenad.9784 You can add some crushed coral. this will increase yur KH and your GH. I keep my KH around 2 or 3 and that's enough. My water is still pretty soft. I put it in my filter tray.
If your GH is zero (no color change even after 40 drops), does this have any implications for planted tanks?
My tap water as well as my tank water comes back with the same results. Thanks.
you may need to add a bit of cal/mag.
Hey Dan.. So it took 6 drops in kH to turn yellow. Question : So that means it has a bit of stability ? Less likely to get pH swings ? Right !
Oh yeah. 6 dKH is pretty solid. Mine is usually between 2 and 4 dKH.
My KH test solution is orange, but when I add it to water, it doesn't turn blue, it just stays orange. Add more drops, still orange. My GH test solution is already blue/green and never turns orange/yellow. Is my test solution just bad? I ordered the test kit from Amazon and several people are complaining of bad batches in the reviews.
Take an antacid tablet and dissolve it in water. If the test does what you're describing, then it's bad. It should give clear color changes in water that has some hardness.
If your water is really soft, the test will do what you're describing. Indicating no hardness.
@@DanHiteshew-oneandonly Thanks! When I dumped the test tubes out in the sink with the water running, they changed colors, so I think they're fine. My results must just be 0 then for both GH and KH. The instructions say 0-3 for Discus, Cardinals, and live plants, which is what I have. So, I hope I'm okay.
2 drops KH, 14 drops GH, is this bad?
I might have to look at getting an RO filter or maybe rainwater.
Bottom feeders; cherry shrimp, khuli loaches, cory's, bristlenose catfish and mussels
If your fish are doing ok, I wouldn't worry too much. My KH is usually between 2 and 4.
Hey Dan. I'm keeping African Cichlids which of course means my GH and KH are both between 9 and 18 degrees approx. Is it necessary to do the test 1 drop at a time or if I know my levels are higher than 12 can I just start with 10 drops and add 1 or 2 at a time after that ?
Sure, as long as ten doesn't change the color.
So if the color changes it means it’s very soft? I thought the opposite for Gh?
Curious why one thumb painted
Look up "Polished man"
I'm glad I asked , I guess that how it works 👍
It's the nail polish that does it for me 😃❤️
I had 3 drops for the kh and 13 drops for the gh
I had 10 drops and it turned greenish yellow should I dose kalk or thats good enough for sps corals?
I have no idea about corals, sorry. i only do freshwater.
Is the first drop counted ?
My water treatment guy says he does. If the first drop turns it yellow, he calls it 1 degree, I call it zero, and he said that's fine too. 0-1 dGH is fine to say.
Are we supposed to add the number of drops from both tests, and then use total drops as the measurement? I ask because instructions included with the test kit are so ambiguous. (and fine print that is too small to read)
What do you mean "both tests"? Just count the number of drops it takes to change color. You don't have to repeat the test.
@@DanHiteshew-oneandonly I answered my own question by watching a different tutorial. "Both" tests means exactly what I said: two tests. These are KH and GH.
Hi, the moment I put in the KH - the first drop turns my water to orange/yellow. Is this bad?
Probably just means you have zero degrees hardness.
i think my ponds ph and kh have crashed, on the first drop for my kh test the water turns light yellow any idea if this is a crash? the tests are new and ive done about 800 gallon water changes my pond is 2000 gallons
That seems like little or no Kh
@@DanHiteshew-oneandonly yea ive added microbe lifts kh booster but now one of my butterfly koi are showing reddness in its tail fin so i assume its stress but not sure
@@anthonybeneventano3077 Are you sure it's not hemorrhagic septicemia?
I get how to use it, ….BUT when do we panic? After one drop, two, etc.?
Is 7, 14, drops of either tester bad or normal - that what I want to know….when do we know we have change the parameters.?
That depends on the fish you keep.
How would it be a zero degree?
call it one if you want. It's got zero Ca or Mg, so I say it's 0 degrees.
So I did this to my rodi water, and the took 1 drop and gh took 1 drop. But my ph is around 7.6-7.8 why is that?
You can have low GH but still have KH. I'm not sure why RODI water would have any carbonates in though. Are your RO filters in need of replacement?
@@DanHiteshew-oneandonly I just purchased the unit, so that shouldn’t be the case.
I’m reading 0-1 ppm tds so I’m very confused lol
So I let the water sit over night and tested the ph today, it’s now around 6.8 ph
@@MK_Aquatics Yeah, that's a bit of a puzzler, for sure. Pure water is neutral, and the CO2 from the atmosphere lowers it a bit. RO water is usually around 6.5
Mine does not change at all is this good thing or bad I’ve got up to 3 drops and it’s the faintest tint off yellow is this good or bad thing please help.
You may not have any Kh at all. When I test it, I get a weird yellowy color that never changes, no matter how many drops I use.
@@DanHiteshew-oneandonly so is that good or bad thing that a don’t have any kh in my fish tank.
@@wayneclark2458 Your pH may swing without any Kh to buffer it. There's products you can buy, or put calcium carbonate, or calcium based rocks or substrate.
my tap water has 13 gH and 16 KH lmao, i need RO water for my fish tanks
Cute nails
Mine took like 8-9 drops is that ok?
It depends on the fish you keep. I'm guessing your pH is close to 8 or above?
@@DanHiteshew-oneandonly yea it’s around 8.3 I keep 2 clowns a lawnmower blenny a yellow wrass 2 bi color damsels and a cardinal fish
why does mine changes to yellow on the 1st drop?
I'm not sure sure what colors it's supposed to turn, but I'd guess you have no KH. I get funny results when I test water that has zero KH. (same with GH)
is it good or bad for fish n shrimp?
@@mraboo2903 I don't know. It depends on the tank and the animals.
I want saltwater fish , it turns yellow after 14 drops , is that good?
If you want saltwater fish, you need to start with RODI (pure water) water and add marine salts to it.
Invert it and bang!!! 🤣🤣🤣
this 'Everyday Fishkeeping' is a joke! You don't answer questions!
I just got to them.
Read the instructions on the test kit.
Discus can be in moderately hard water.
Why are your fingernails painted? That's so weird and unnatural, yuck 🤮
Look up "polished Man".
Shaving and using soap is also unnatural but I still do it.
