  • Well. You asked for so I finally did it. This is a quick and dirty comparison and mild review of the complete set of WeatherTech window covers for 5the Gen 4Runners. I compare them to my self-made Reflectix covers and decide if they are worth the price or if I just wasted my money.
Spoiler...I didn't waste my money. If you're' considering these WeatherTech covers for your 4Runner (or other vehicle) this is especially for you.
I purchased mine from CarID. These are the EXACT covers from the video

Thanks so much, very helpful information on these window covers. I just watched the video from the guy in Florida and your video was recommended. Subbed to your channel to get ideas for camping out of 4Runner. I just placed my order and went with Carid as will receive in 4 days verses Amazon and Weathertech out two weeks. I made my last window covers too but they were a PITA to make.

Hey Tina, really glad to have you here and funny you comment this because I've been meaning to pin an update on the covers for the past few weeks now. Before I say anything else, I am sure you're going to be happy with the Weather-Techs as I was/am. There have been a few hiccups but both CarID and WT have been ridiculously helpful. Really the big problem was a delamination with the surface materials but nothing that actually hindered the functionality of the covers. Now that I think about it, maybe I should just do an update episode because even typing this out makes me feel like I'm leaving out a lot of information. Regardless, if I can answer any real-world question you might have about the 5th Gen living situation let me know. Leia and I are coming up on a year of full-time dwelling in the build which seems unreal.

Thanks for this video! Landscape photographer here that does some occasional long weekend trips out of the 4Runner and I'd been trying to decide if the WeatherTech's were worth it! Sounds like they are - here's hoping for some Christms money! Been enjoying the channel!

Hey Jeff, glad this little video helped make your decision a bit less painful. I'm actually sitting in the 4Runner as we speak and ended up taking one of the window covers out just so my dog could see out the window for a while and then put it back in...SO MUCH EASIER than my old covers which, sadly, I went ahead and threw away today....

Thanks for the video very helpful! I'm just about to order mine, was wondering how they held up? And what is the ceiling net you'e using? I'm looking to get one of those too!

Glad you got some use from the review! I've actually got an entire update review filmed on these covers that I'm going to be posting here on this channel and my newly created channel dedicated to nothing but my 4Runner living situation called @4Runner_Nomad. In short, I ran into some delamination issues with the covers. I can't totally recommend them but WeatherTech customer service was great. I've essentially had three replacement sets of covers sent to me.
I'm EXTREMELY behind on my episode postings but I swear that review is coming. I've just promised a lot of people another gigantic (unrelated) episode will post before anything else. I'm hoping to have it all finished and posted by next weekend. So if you can wait a bit I think you'll find the update review useful prior to purchase.
As for the cargo net, what I'm currently using is this one from Amazon amzn.to/3xDjHaj
The one in the video was sagging quite a bit and I went with this one that had the those reinforced webbing. It's performed much better and I've had it in constant use for nearly a year.

I just want to say how much I appreciate the review. While I understand it's fresh, it gives me a perspective I just can't find anywhere else. I've seen many saying how great they are, but not comparing the two side by side like this. I see convenience being a big winner here for sure. I noticed in your steak and cactus video they aren't as tucked in, but I assume that's because the vehicle is more lived in, and it's just "life". Not any example of them falling apart or wearing out over the past couple of weeks already. Now it is just a matter of battling the cost. Determining if the cost of the covers outweighs the cost of time, or an additional layer of insulation for sleeping, heating blanket (that would suck the life out of batter supply), etc. If/when I do decide I'll make sure to use your link to give some token of appreciation for what it might do to help. It's now getting into the sub '30s up in the North East, and also the urgency of needing the Window protection is going to be paramount, also the quick convenience, in the frigid scenarios is something I see being likely it paying for themselves within a couple weeks. On a few super chilly nights, when I just need to get set up, sealed up, and settled in, those precious few minutes or even 10 minutes could mean the difference between hell and heaven. Again thanks for the video, mucho appreciated.

Hey no problem at all, man. Glad it helped you out. And so far still so good. I've come to the conclusion that the rear cover that was slightly loose just needs some more careful adjustment because I was able to press it in and it's been fine ever since. Temps dipped down to 10F outside of Gallup, New Mexico the other night ambient temps in the car were around 35F. I'm back in Tennessee now and temps will be in single digits so I've got a hold of a tiny 500w heater from Amazon that is INSANE for it's size. I could technically run it for around 2.5 hours on my house battery but I figure it won't take around ten minutes before it gets the interior of the vehicle roasting and then that should be enough ambient heat to linger till morning before I fire it up again.
If you do end up going with the WeatherTechs let me know what you think.
Random but last night I stumbled across some hand made straw window covers (I'm serious) for the 5th gens but they are upwards of $1K.....
And no worries about the CarID link, man. It's not even an affiliate but if you go the Amazon route I'll receive a small %.

@@AdamWelch am I reading this right, straw window covers? Wow. Also that is pretty good data to hear that at 10 degrees outdoors and indoors you were at around 35 degrees F. I’d wager to think if you hung like a insulated blackout curtain between you and the front seats it’d be even warmer. As for that little heater yeah. From everything I’m reading and seeing is that, there is just no way around it, unless you go diesel and have proper ventilation, your going to burn through even the best beefiest batteries on the market to keep a space heated over the night. One tip someone told me I thought was smart was heating up rocks on a cast iron just before you tuck in for the night and they would emit just enough heat to keep things safe. Please keep us (me) posted as you manage through these colder times. I’ll be very interested to see how things go.

@@ableandrew Sorry man I don't know how I missed this. So far so good with the window covers. Still working great and I finally got the fitment in the rear remedied. Not really sure what was wrong but it finally stayed put so I'm not messing with it.
Something to add which I've noticed in the long term use of the covers (or any cover really) is that they kill cell single. I can have full bars outside the vehicle and 1-2 bars inside. I had the same problem with the Reflectix. It might be an issue for some, especially with metal topped vehicles like the 4Runner. I've actually just received a WeBoost for Christmas so hopefully after I get that mounted up it will solve that issue.
Hahaha and yeah I'm completely serious about the straw covers.... strawfoothandmade.com/products/window-covers-toyota-4runner-5th-gen-2010-current?variant=42618996490400
And no joke, just realized they're located in Santa Cruz. I was just through there a couple weeks ago. If would had known I would have stopped in there. Happy Holidays to you man and have a great New Year.

@@AdamWelch no worries. I appreciate the feedback, and wow I looked at those strawfoothandmades and a few videeos on them. While they do look like great quality, for that price tag they better have built in heaters powerd by solar threads too.
Also another very important piece of info actually on that, with the cell signal. That is something I would have never thought of, and really important to know about. I've ben wondering if those WeBoosts work, on my list of things. However these window covers are first priority. I hope you're new year is off to an amazing start by time you see this and I look forward to the next post.. A wealth of info you have really helped with.
      Thank you so much.

@@ableandrew You as well, man! I'm behind on comments again as usual. You're most welcome and I'm glad it helped out a bit.
BTW, this WeBoost is INSANE. Much more efficient than I thought. It takes me from 1-2 bars inside to full signal. I have the OTR Drive Reach and even it only draws about max 10 watts.

Weathertech is too expensive. I bought one of their wind deflectors for my Lexus and it doesn't fit right. Seriously doubt I'll sink money into their window coverings.
I like the idea of using that black coating on the back side that you mentioned.

I'm about to film a long terms review episode on these covers in the next few days most likely. It's been a very interesting experience but what I can say is Weathertechs customer service has been PHENOMENAL. I hope you got in touch with them about the issue with your fitment?

How do you get any ventilation?

    • @AdamWelch
      @AdamWelch  Рік тому +1

As unlikely as it sounds it's never been an issue until the summer months. In the winter I actually shut off all the vents to help keep as much warm air in as possible. I still have three fans rigged up inside to circulate the air if needed but generally when it warms up (like now) I take down the two passenger covers off and slide on some black window screens I got off Amazon. They let in a ton of air, keeps the bugs out, and have held up surprisingly well for nearly a year now. They offer a lot of privacy as well even when I have the interior lights on at night.
