Tom my song has a popularity score of 22% and it only got a small push on RR, 50 streams in the whole week :( Why is this? Your supposed to get big spikes if ur song is over 20% popularity score... right? I’m so dissapointed 😭
We tried this strategy with our last release and copied the ad set from the ongoing campaign to use in the new campaign, and BOTH ad sets went up on release day! So, I think you have to make sure your ad sets are not connected in any way, like don't duplicate the ad set or use the exact same audience. The one campaign seemed to be influencing the learning of the other one even though I didn't touch it.
Hi Tom ! One thing I don’t understand, My music distributor is distrokid how do you get a your spotify link before the release. For example : if you wanna release a new song on Friday at 00:00 and want your ad to start at the same time you need to prepare your ad before and schedule it at 00:00 but how do you get the spotify link of that song to put on your smart link or whatever before that same song is released. Thanks, Ben.
There's a little workaround where you can grab that link on Spotify for Artists the Thursday before release. If the release goes live by timezone, it will appear in the profile tab in SFA. You can click the three dots and select "View on Spotify". The song will be greyed out when you get there, so you can't listen to it, but you can grab the link and switch it out in your campaign before it goes live.
"The lion's share" made me crack up hahaha I could tell it came spontaneously, too. This was a great video, thanks for sharing. I have a question, Tom. I do keep a spreadsheet with some information from both the FB Ads side and the Spotify side of things, but it's not as highly developed or detailed as yours. Is there a chance you could share a blank template of the spreadsheet you use, so a guy like me can bump up his game? Thanks!
Hey dude of course! I included the link to download my template in a video a few months back but I will add it to the video description to make things easy!
One question: are you using only stories placements or are you using also facebook and instagram feeds and explore? I used to have only stories and recently started using feeds/explore but I get mixed feelings: sometimes the conversions are cheaper but I am not sure if they translate well in the spotify streams... Also I get a lot more clicks but the percentage of people that actually convert is less. I was never able to get 0.09 conversions, my last song is doing pretty bad, some days it's like 0.25 or even more.
Since i edited my release with distrokid my Things are weird my Song does not appear on new song it appears on releases and the streams do not get added on UA-cam to the youtube greated page. It was a collaboration but i changed it to a Feature
Well I have NO IDEA how it happened but I've got one of my tunes on Discover Weekly this Monday just gone! I just looked at my Spotify for Artists page now! Yay! But I've done no FB advertising, my popularity score has been dropping overall as an artist to 8(eek!), and it's a tune I've had out for over a year - what the actual heck?! So I wonder how this happened - chuffed but baffled! Your videos are AWESOME and inspiring btw. I think you might be able to tell I am seriously brewing up for some FB Ad fun but thought I'd share my news with you but I'm slightly incredulous and wondered what you thought caused that?!!!!
Do you have to view Spotify for artists on a computer to see a lot of this information? I have the mobile app and compared to what you seem to be getting i have extremely limited statistics
I ran these ads on Facebook stories, Instagram stories, and Messenger stories. You can advertise directly on Spotify but it's not very effective yet. I'm hopeful that Marquee might change that as they roll it out to everyone this year.
Hey Tom, 2 quick questions for you: first, do you think you'd get the same results promoting a song released a year ago, or is it worth doing a push with a new song for better results? Second, on average is I spend $1000 on promo, judging by your results, what do you think I can estimate for a return in streams? Thanks man
Hey thanks for the questions! If you have a brand new song, you’ll have the option to get it on release radar within the first four weeks of release. If that’s an option, then a new song is better. If you have an old song with some traction that only needs a slight lift, then that’s the better option. And it’s tough to estimate the number of streams to expect. Who you’re targeting, where they live, and the quality of your music (and ads) are all significant factors that vary.
Great as always!! As you said, the process was profitable because of UA-cam, so I wonder if you are actually planning to get to a certain point where you have, say, 1k new followers and then you'll stop the campaign... Do you have a kind of goal every time you set a campaign? Thanks!!!
Right now my immediate goal is to be profitable as an overall business, all the parts incorporated into that. UA-cam is currently necessary to make that math work, but I plan to eventually arrive at a point where Spotify revenue is greater than ad spend so it is profitable within its own silo. I’m more focused on process right now than I am on results like followers or streams. I’m only concerned with those inasmuch as they serve my long term strategy.
I keep watching tutorials about conversion ads, yet I NEVER get low costs like you, that doesn't make sense. I'll literally pay you to go through my ads with me cause i tried a billion different ways.
It took me a long time to get it sorted like this. And even then, I still have songs and ads that just don't work as well as others. Keep going and once you have an ad that's performing well, let it ride. I don't run ads for others just yet, but it is something I'm working on!
Brilliant Tom! How do you set your single release time in DistroKid? There are two options: 00:00 in every users time zone or at 00:00 New York time? Can’t get my head around the moment I have to start my ad campaign to make the most out of the first 24 hours
Tom, thanks for these super helpful videos. Question: You've spoken about building a Spotify Growth campaign initially based on a "culled" audience, which you later replace with Custom and LAL audiences. Can you please explain what you mean by the "culled" audience?
How much important is to run your ads the day of the release? What if you start running an ad with the same strategy but 1 or 2 months after the release date of your song?
You definitely want to hit it the first day if you can, but if you can’t I’d still definitely recommend running ads to promote your music. Even if it’s been out for a minute.
@@tomdupreeiii yea I’m pretty sure that Spotify algorithm wants us to hit hard during the first days. Just wondering how much worse the results can be if you run an Ads after a while. I’ll make some tests ✌️ BTW your videos are gold, here in Italy nobody talks about these stuffs for musicians
If anybody is willing to setup and run the ad campaign for me I will give you all the information needed and pay you. I don’t know wat I’m doing and it’s frustrating
Great work man. I'm surprised your song wasn't added to an Editorial Playlist. Any ideas why not? What sort of streams / save-rate / popularity score do you think would be needed for that??
Thanks dude! I’m still trying to figure that one out. My best guess at this point is a high stream rate, save rate, stream count, and popularity score fir an extended period of time. But I’m not sure beyond that.
@@tomdupreeiii Yep, it's the next mystery to unpick! Like you, I track the data. I think the day we crack an editorial playlist, the math will tell us the answer. I came across another artist recently who had just released a track. It was good, so I checked it out through the console. At the time, the popularity was 38 and the streams were a little below 50k. 2 weeks later, she posted on instagram thanking Spotify for being placed on Fresh Finds - Pop (which I believe is a part-algorithmic playlist based on Discover Weekly performance). What was interesting though was that she was in position #1. I wondered if that was only the case for me, as I was following her and the list is algorithmic. 1 week after that though, she posted again with a flurry of 4 editorial playlists - and her streams had hit 200k! So I think when it flies, it flies high. Her popularity at this point was 46 - and that was about 8 weeks after release.
Niceee. Just curious Tom, does just turning off a particular creative like a section of a song cause it to go back into the learning phase? Or for instance would turning off a particular ad set or creative during the learning phase be a big issue? I figured it’d be best to just leave things but just curious in case there’s a glaring thing that I’d like to turn off.
Turning off an ad won’t cause the ad set the re-enter the learning phase. Only adding an ad will do that. That’s why I like to start with options and cull them out over time. Having said that, I would definitely wait until your ad set is out of the learning phase (and then some of you can be patient) before making any adjustments at all.
@@tomdupreeiii Ahh okay that brilliant yeah that’s I was thinking cause turning off things seems to be a great way to stream line your budget towards what’s specifically working. Thanks again dude and congrats on the success.
Hey thank you! I used a combination of audiences. One ad set targeted similar artists, another targeted a lookalike, and then another retargeted a custom audience. The lookalike got the most traffic.
this is awesome , your right playlist is a waste of time , but ive already launched my song , its awesome so how do I build it up and gain traction though its already been released
Hey mate congrats! I've just been playlisted by Spotify on my side :p great video full of data! Got to make all this me too :( just begun with some Open Office sheets etc
Dude, that's awesome! Congratulations! I'm going to add this spreadsheet template to the description of this video so you can use that as a jumping off point. I've had a few others ask about that as well.
Hi Tom, Thanks for sharing and fun to see your success. About the videos from which you created the lookalike audience: Were they feed videos or stories? And what is the average length? Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for the info my man! Did you only target US and Canada for this campaign? Or did you target other countries as well as worldwide? if not, why not? (besides wanting to stay within your location) Thanks!
I targeted all Spotify territories with the exception of India and Philippines. I just had one ad set specifically targeting the US and Canada, as I would like to grow there in particular.
Thank you for this amazing video! When I set my budget from 50 Dollars to 10 Dollars after three days, did my adset have to enter the learning phase again?
Hey Tom! Binging your videos today! Thankyou for such good content- hope you go from strength to strength! 💪. One q though! : You said that you copied one of the ad sets from the $60 a day ad set which lasted 3 days into your regular ongoing Spotify growth ad. You mention it at 12 mins and it’s called “Lions (ads vids) (18-34) (M-F)”. Was this the ad set which had all your video views from past till present?? I want to understand how it got out of the learning phase in “a day” like you said with no problems. If you could explain this that’d be great! Thanks Tom!!! 👏
Yes! So I didn't technically "duplicate" it. I simply made the exact same ad set in my ongoing campaign with all the same settings that were in the three-day release campaign. It got out of the learning phase so quickly simply because both the ad and my targeting performed very well together.
Hey Tom, great work and happy for your results. One question though is, what's the goal for future profitability? 40k streams is probably around $140 in revenue, but you did spend around $150 ads. How do you plan to make money consistently off the music?
The streams will continue to go up over time, so once I've recouped my ad spend, everything beyond that is profit. And the more music I release, the more this margin increases. It's a long-term strategy.
@Samsaraindo no I’m afraid I don’t do one on one consulting. I’m happy to answer any questions you have via DM or you can hop into the livestream I host on Fridays and ask me directly!
So all that work and tracking and spreadsheets after of course the time in making the music and you walked away with less than a $20 profit that is of course unless you have kept paying for people to listen then you probably lost money
Congrats on the streams Tom. The main thing that helped was the song..it was a great song right! Great vid useful metrics I was surprised at the save rate I thought under 20% and you are done but you say 10-17% is ok ? That pop score is stubborn tho for me..what is it based on number of streams?
Hey thanks dude! Yeah I think the pop score is mostly based off of streams + timespan. I’m still working out the particulars on that one. I think it’s a combination of factors that all add to the algorithm in different ways. So they can counterbalance one another. I think that’s why I got on DW with under a 20% save rate.
@@tomdupreeiii Very interesting, just released a single, I need to try out some of these methods, however having issues with FB Ads, contacting FB support seems to be a nightmare.
Hi Tom, I have a few questions. You spend the most money on the first 3 days, but Spotify's algorithm doesn't respond until the following Friday. Doesn't it make more sense to stick with the higher budget over a longer period of time? Like 20-30$ a day for the whole first week? It seems like the gap from 60$ to 10$ is very high. Also, campaigns need to improve first. After a few days, the costs are lowering and then the higher budget would have much more effect. Is there any evidence that the first three days are the most import ones? You entered discover weekly 2.5 weeks after release. Do you really think that has something to do with the first three days when you spent the most budget? I'm wondering because my new song is coming out on Friday and I don't know how to allocate my budget. Thanks :-)
Pumping the budget within the first few days both helps to drive traffic and to gather data for your campaign quickly. Ideally you could keep a higher budget over a longer period of time. I think as long as you push hard within that first week you’re gonna have better results. But even at $10 per day, a solid campaign can do a lot of good for a release.
How did you come up with the popularity score? Is this a widely used metric or something you created? I don’t see it in my Spotify for artists. Would love some more insight thanks for all this so far!
Hey, Tom, great content! When do you think is the latest you can get on Discover weekly? Does it have to be in the first 28 days or can you get on later? Thanks!
You can do it anytime! There's no limit like with Release Radar. You just have to get a good push the week leading up to Monday and your odds will go up.
Hi Tom, this is freaking awesome. Thank you! I've been working a Facebook / Spotify campaign for the last 3-4 days with great success. I have similar numbers so far, but definitely hoping for a RR or DW placement to help things take off more. Anyhow, I have a question about your spreadsheet. There is a Global metrics section that has inputs for the Last 24 Hours. For global metrics, I only see the last 28 days (or last 7 days) on my Spotify analytics. Where/how can I access that data? I have it for the individual song but would be cool to be able to fill in all the data. Thank you again, this is amazing!
Hey thanks for watching. So glad this one was helpful! You should be able to find 24 hour data in the song list. I don’t think it’s available in the audience tab.
Hey , thanks for all the clarity . About what audience sizes are good to work with on the lookalike and the retargeting audiences ? Like is there a number you like to get to on the 95% video views and then add it to be retargeted or lookalike?
Hey Tom once again great video! Would it be possible if you could make a video on how much money you made from your streams? This can give us insight on what to expect for the work we put in!
It’s tough to say exactly because stores payout on a three month delay, so I can only make an educated guess at this point. The rough math I laid out at the end of the video is as much information I have as of now. But revenue is something I will continue to cover on the channel on an ongoing basis.
Hey Tom, Love your videos! QUESTION: Is this a conversion campaign using a Facebook Pixel? If so, I'm curious if you are you using Hypeddit, Toneden or something else. Thanks!
You'll need to create a business manager account and run your ads from a business ad account. I don't recommend running them from your personal account.
I lov3 how you & @andrewsouthworth show your journey ... It's beautiful to see ... Everyone's journey is different bx we are all unique as a human raxe ... We are not in xompetition ... Keep evolving everyone
What would your advice be if my CPC is around $0.15 but my cost per conversion is around $2.89? I'm kinda confused at the difference between these metrics.
My costs definitely went up for the first few days after I changed everything over. The highest I ever saw it was $0.19, but that was only about 1/4 through that day. They been coming in between $0.10 and $0.15 for the most part ever since.
really awesome video. fantastic deeper insight and thanks so much for sharing and being entertaining with it. f@&k you are spreadsheet king! one question for you. are you able to calculate the knock on effect as in people going on from Lions to listen to other tracks?
Hey thank you! That’s not something I have actively paid attention to or tries to track. I’m sure there’s a way to do it, but I haven’t paid it much mind yet. Thank you for mentioning it though. I may have to start seeing if I can track that!
Great videos both from you and Andrew Southworth. The second time I tried this it worked for me too, not this good but still much better than anything else I tried, so thank you! I wonder though what is the popularity score? Never heard of it before
That's awesome to hear this process worked for you as well! Thank you for sharing that with me. If you want to learn more about popularity score, you can check this video out:ua-cam.com/video/VSU7nfiZ0pc/v-deo.html.
This is crazy! I just released a song myself but I think I botched the campaign 😅 Sall good though it’s just another learning experience. I really appreciate this video because it helps highlight some areas where my campaign may have went wrong 🤘🏿 Could you make a video explaining how to use the spreadsheet template you used in this video?
Sorry to hear your campaign didn't go well! I have a video walkthrough of my spreadsheet that you can check out here: ua-cam.com/video/-233iFIbHrs/v-deo.html. I hope it helps!
Hey Tom! Just wondering, that is it making any harm if I have a 95% video view retarget audience AND also lookalike audience based on that same retarget audience in a same ad set? Or is it better to keep these two audiences separated?
@@tomdupreeiii Sounds sweet man! One more question: When you added this Lions ad set to your on-going campaign, is the audience still the exact same 95% previous video viewers/lookalike, or is the audience based on those viewers who watched your three day release campaign videos? My head is buzzing cause I can`t stop thinking about audience overlapping stuff when building these ad sets... 😅
@Aston Kalmari it’s the same 95% video audience. I don’t worry too much about audience overlap. The pools are so big that any repeat ad exposure will negligible.
Congrats on your success! Will you be making a video in the feature on making a excel sheet to keep track of all your data the same way you did? It honestly helps to see everything so clearly
Hi Tom thanks for your video! Just wanted to ask what exactly do you promote on FB ads? I’m talking about the content, is it like a trailer with lyrics and a link to your Spotify or the actual song with a cover?
My other question is, since Most artists are getting exposed to NfTs, wha are the Plans of Spotify in terms that ? are they planning to build a model to cater for this Trend... Its Really Interesting times for the Music industry
Hi again - so when you talk about video views and targetting people who watched 95% of them, I assume you mean the advert videos that you used in your various ad campaigns? Is that right? You used your album cover, Spotify logo and I think you said some sort of slight movement! How did you animate this in order to make this a video rather than a photo? Or does it count as a "video" if the audio runs for say 15 seconds but there is no movement but people are staring at the artwork and listening for a period of time? Hope that makes sense!
Congrats dude! You're killing it.
Thanks buddy! Just trying to catch up to you!

Man I love the idea of having two campaigns : one ongoing campaign and one for hitting hard on the very first days!
Glad you're feeling that strategy. It was definitely a chance to take, but it paid off!
We tried this strategy with our last release and copied the ad set from the ongoing campaign to use in the new campaign, and BOTH ad sets went up on release day! vERY PRO bRO... I LIKE HOW DETAILED YOU ARE AND HOW YOU LAUGHING OVER ALLYOUR DOWNLPAYS..COOL STUFF MAN... LOVE THE PAGE ITS IS VERYV COOL
which countries did you include/ exclude for your lookalike 95% ad vids audience?
I included all Spotify territories with the exception of India and Philippines.
@@tomdupreeiii You're a legend. Keep going sir 🙏🏻
Great work Tom! I'm curious, are you mixing and mastering your tunes yourself?
Hey thanks dude! Yeah I do everything myself from start to finish.
Hey Tom, great video! I have a question: Did you use a lookalike or a custom audience for Lions? Thanks in advance, Bekim
Hey thank you! I used a combination of audiences. One ad set targeted similar artists, another targeted a lookalike, and then another retargeted a custom audience. The lookalike got the most traffic.
@@tomdupreeiii Thank you so much!
Man I love your intro! Especially the "zoom in" when you say "life". I'm definitely NOT saying it with you every time 😁😁
Haha! Man I love that! This comment makes my day! 🙌🏻
U da man, man!
Haha! I try!
Hey Tom! Hope everything is good. I wanted to know, where did you place these ads? Facebook, Instagram? Sorry if my question feels dumb.
Not dumb at all! I use Instagram stories placements.
@@tomdupreeiii Thanks man!! Really appreciate your answer and your videos!! Keep it up!
You look like Michael Buble. You should add that to target artists in your campaign 😁
Great video. 👍
this is awesome , your right playlist is a waste of time , but ive already launched my song , its awesome so how do I build it up and gain traction though its already been released
How do you get all of that Spotify "Release Statistics" Information??
What countries were performing best the 9 cent conversion?
Great work man ! I know you put all the profit back into the business
You already know!

And there are timestamps in the description if you want to jump to a specific section.
Hi Tom, Thanks for sharing and fun to see your success. About the videos from which you created the lookalike audience: Were they feed videos or stories? And what is the average length? Thanks for sharing.
Hey you bet! I use stories placements only. Each video is 15 seconds long.

Thank you! I included all Spotify territories except India and the Philippines.
You that 🤝
Appreciate you!
love it bro! ive been binge watching you and andrew y'all are killing it!
Awesome! Thanks dude!
You're so welcome! Yes, any budget adjustment greater than 50% will make your ad set re-enter the learning phase.
Thanks for the answer✌🏼 So it is ok to re-enter? Because in the video you dropped the money from 50 to 7,50 Dollars.
Yeah it’s not the end of the world to re-enter the learning phase. It’s something I try to avoid whenever possible, but in this case it made sense.
@@tomdupreeiii Thank you so much Tom! ✌🏼
Hi Tom ! that laugh cracked me up xD
but im very confused, isnt release radar only made for your followers ?
Glad you liked it! It is for the first week. After that you can get pushed out to new listeners.
@@tomdupreeiii Thanks Tom. I am going to try this out soon. Do you do consulting sessions?
Why did you have one campaign for the first 3 days of release then turned that one off to start the $10 ongoing campaign?
Mostly budgetary reasons. I wanted to hit it hard the first three days. My $10 campaign stays on no matter what.
Great work Tom, some very useful data, will you do the same for the next release?
Yeah that’s the plan! I’m going to repeat the exact same method and see how it compares.
@@tomdupreeiii Very interesting, just released a single, I need to try out some of these methods, however having issues with FB Ads, contacting FB support seems to be a nightmare.
Hope you can get it worked out!
It’s a metric calculated by Spotify. You can find it in the Spotify developer panel. More info here: ua-cam.com/video/VSU7nfiZ0pc/v-deo.html
Do you think this success would've been possible without the lookalike audience?
I think it would have been more difficult to achieve without the amount of data I had on my audience beforehand.
Wow. That’s incredible insight to what I should be doing for my releases. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I haven’t delved into ads yet.
You're so welcome!
What is the Spotify popularity rate and how do you check it? Thanks great video!
It’s based on your streams over a certain period of time. You can find it in Spotify’s developer panel for both your song and your artist profile.
This is some juicy info. Thanks for sharing. You have earned yourself a sub!!
Thanks for the sub! I appreciate you!
Hey , thanks for all the clarity .
About what audience sizes are good to work with on the lookalike and the retargeting audiences ?
Like is there a number you like to get to on the 95% video views and then add it to be retargeted or lookalike?
For my custom audience of 95% video views I like to have at least 1,000 people. Ideally somewhere between 2,500 and 10,000 is great.
Thanks for the info and congrats on your profitable start to 2021! Vibe Goin' Up and so it is!
That's right! Thank you for the love!
Amazing work dude. How did you work out your popularity score?
It's a metric that Spotify automatically creates for you. You can learn more about it here: ua-cam.com/video/VSU7nfiZ0pc/v-deo.html.
Doing a great job man! Thanks for sharing. Can I ask how you are calculating your "popularity score"?
Thanks for watching! The popularity score is something Spotify calculates for us. You can learn more here: ua-cam.com/video/VSU7nfiZ0pc/v-deo.html.
Did you just have Spotify on your landing page, or other sites as well?
Just Spotify. One choice.

Would it be possible to have multiple songs on release radar and discover weekly?
Yeah definitely possible. I think you only get one release pushed at a time though, so you can stagger them but can't have them hit all at once.
Did you do playlist pitching?
No, none. Only Facebook ads.

I have a silly question. To run the ads, do I open a businees page right from my individual account or do I go to a different fb business site? Thanks
You'll need to create a business manager account and run your ads from a business ad account. I don't recommend running them from your personal account.

Love your videos Tom! Thanks for sharing. Question, what is your cost per conversion for your Lions Ad(s) after the iOS14 updates?

@@tomdupreeiii it might be interesting because obviously those additional streams can be counted as part of the revenue from each campaign

@@tomdupreeiii amazing. Keep up the good work man you’re helping people more than you’ll ever know!
Hey Tom! Just wondering, that is it making any harm if I have a 95% video view retarget audience AND also lookalike audience based on that same retarget audience in a same ad set? Or is it better to keep these two audiences separated?
No not at all. That exactly what I do. It works great!

Congrats Tom! Great song and great ad strategy.
Hey thank you!
