Cautionary little addition: be careful how much value you're putting into people's feedback. Consider, carefully, what THEIR experience and thus THEIR value is to what you're trying to do. There's a difference between asking Shakespeare for his opinion compared to someone writing One Piece fan fiction. Just something to consider

      100% ☝
The first problem people usually have is being too guarded and not being willing to listen to advice and feedback in the first place, but then the second problem is making sure you're getting the real meaning and intent behind the feedback. Sometimes it's obvious, sometimes it's not. 😅

I like devs/studios that keep their vision but still listen to their players feedback. I have heard of some games failing or at very least being damaged because their either listened to ALL feedback or only listened to pro players which meant bad experience for casuals/low skill level players. But there are also games that struggle because they don't listen to any feedback an only stick to their vision - which meant that the game was made for the developers - they were pretty much only players that liked the game and everyone else who tried it fell off (a lot of hardcore mmo games fell for this - devs just didn't bother to add things like tutorials and manuals because "its hardcore, it means no handholding! learn EVERYTHING by hand, NO HELP".... meanwhile their communities tried to write wikis which... some hc players used and stayed in game but also many new players never found em and dropped off... especially pvp hc games were bad since veterans sometimes went to seek out noobs and ruined their day... which devs allowed cuz it was either their vision, or they were also killing noobs and/or they were thinking its partly what made the genre...... .... ..... so only veterans stayed, no new players wanted to try more than an hour... and eventually veterans didn't have anything to do and they quit... numbers went down.. game died....).
Just remember: if you make game for everyone you make game for no one... but also if you make game for just yourself you also are making game for no one (but yourself). It needs a balance between those two.

The best feedback is the annoying, or at least mildly irritating feedback. The trouble with the feedback system is that people are rewarded for giving you over the top praise…10/10 …you love their feedback and they earn credits. I think it’s a good way to generate feedback…..but it does generate a lot of chuff. So if you’ve ever had feedback from me ….i hope you found it really really annoying! This video is great advice ….perhaps I should find out what people actually think of my latest effort before I throw any more of my time at it….or just spend six months making the graphics slightly better and another hidden area that nobody will ever visit!

this is what i hate about reddit
people don't upvote things that help the community or create healthy conversation
people upvote when they agree and downvote when they don't
which leads to most popular replies and topics being shown and unpopular replies and topics are hidden... it creates "yesmen" culture where everyone agrees and anyone who points anything wrong about popular theory/opinion isn't getting visibility.... this means that nothing changes, everything stays the same (and as history has proved many times: most popular believes are not always the correct ones).. its a self-feeding system
this is even worse if lets say devs or publishers moderate their own subreddit because on top of that yes-men ring they also can ban and/or delete anyone with anykinda criticism... so how is anyone supposed to give constructive feedback if they have to both avoid banhammer AND possible fanboyarmy at the same time? you bring up overpowered exploit and devs might ban you for sharing cheats or if that doesn't happen you get downvoted by people who abuse that exploit that are replying "its part of the game" and "everyone does it, you should do it too" etc.... reddit might be the worst place for feedback because of this... steam forums are toxic too but at least people are allowed to post unpopular opinions

@@Surkk2960 Everyone learn at a different speed. But the practice quality is very important in my opinion. Like, from my own experience, focusing on coding a lot of 1 month projects from games to softwares/tools or even simulations, is a very powerful way to learn quicker. And often going back to something you made or failed to made a couple of months ago (or a year ago) and redoing it completly from scratch again is amazing, because it force your brain to find another (hopefully better) solution than the one you found in the first place.
Its also a great way of seeing even the smallest steps of progress you have made.
And try to focus on writing less code to make more (the less for more principle).
And try to regurarly go back at your code and try to improve it (less code, mre readability, perhaps a better reusability, etc..).

    Genre: puzzle horror
You find your old computer then you find a sticky note that says the password you look around the computer until you notice something is wrong as it gets corrupted and infects your room
So can I do it in this engine or should I find another one?

Everyone seems to ask a third person if engine/tool/framework X is right for the job, instead of giving it a try on their own initiative and concluding for themselves. I understand you might want to prevent "wasted time", but trust me, you need to experience it all yourself and not rely on others' judgement. So by all means, yes. Much is possible in GDevelop by this point. Give the engine a try, develop, iterate, fail, have fun, receive feedback, tweak, improve, repeat

Just publish your game on gd.games, make sure it's public and searchable, and have your feedback setting turned on. Any game on the site with a low number of plays could be picked when somebody presses the button.

Well, yeah, the best games become popular, it's true. But if the main focus is "to make a game", there's high chance of this game just... existing?
There's little things that I hate more about modern gamedev, than gamedevs praising each other for just finishing another mediocre game that lacks any solid idea whatsoever, and that made some profit just because other fellow game developers wanted to support their peer.
Not every game has to exist. And now the only "real failure" out there is not making a game, but it should be other way round. "Just start building it" would encourage people to just release whatever, just for a fact of doing so.
I would say, it should be more of "Think about 'why my game has to exist', and then start building it".

I definitely don't think they will.
Like I said in the video, game ideas are cheap. I have dozens upon dozens of really cool game ideas written down, and everyone who works in the game industry is going to at least have a few they can pick from.
Ideas mean nothing. If you want a good example, think about flappy bird, somebody managed to shake the mobile games industry by making a bird fly between pipes. 😅 Your idea isn't special, and your game won't succeed because of your game idea, it'll succeed because of the work you did and design choices you made.
(If someone is going to try and steal your game, it's only after you've already made it successful, and the name of the game is worth stealing. Not during the early development phase.)

    • @flamart9703
      @flamart9703 9 днів тому +1

Yes, they will steal your idea if they think it's good. I have around 200 game and other ideas collected over 10 years, but I get ideas from everywhere, even from non game related things, and if I think your idea is good and can use it, I'll steal it for my games. :) There are regularly people on reddit with lack of creativity, but good at coding or other areas, asking for good game ideas, because they can't think of any, they will steal your idea too. But, if you share your idea to me or someone more experienced, you'll probably get useful feedback and advice on whether your idea works and whether it can be improved, so you won't waste time testing your idea and later seeing that it wasn't as good as you thought.

    Issue Description:
I'm developing a Flappy Bird-like game in GDevelop 5. The game functions as expected during the initial playthrough:
Upon the bird's death, the end screen displays both the current score and the high score accurately.
However, after clicking the restart button:
The game restarts, and while the current score resets correctly, the high score increments incorrectly.
    Example Scenario:
    First Playthrough:
    Achieved Score: 5
    Displayed High Score: 5
    After Restart:
    Achieved Score: 3
Displayed High Score: 6 (instead of remaining 5)
    Observations:
I've noticed that altering the order of events in the event sheet affects the high score behavior. For instance, certain configurations result in the high score increasing by 2, while others cause it to display as 0. This suggests that the sequence of events might be contributing to the problem.
    Request for Assistance:
I'm seeking guidance on how to correctly manage and display the high score upon restarting the game. Any insights into the proper ordering of events or best practices for handling score variables in GDevelop 5 would be greatly appreciated.
