I started dyeing scales several years back after seeing one of your videos on dyeing scales. Since then I have dyed a lot of scales with good results. I use iDye Poly, which is powdered and in basic colors, and I save the dye in a clean plastic milk jug. I dye in an old SS large chilli pot on an electric hot plate. I mix a gallon of water to a packet of dye in boiling water. I keep the dye boiling while the scales are in the dye and, in my experience, the scales become darker the longer I leave them in, so I pull them as soon as they reach my target color. To me the color is always a mix of the original color of the scale plus the dye. Using red dye, orange scales come out bright red, while grey scales come out a burgundy red, close to your purple. Tan seems to work best with Blue dye, and I have mixed a little red dye with blue for a purple shade using tan. Green on tan G10 scales is awesome. I have left scales in too long and they will get too dark for me and I find boiling the scales in water alone will slightly lighten their shade. I had not thought about adding vinegar, but as I think about it, it may just improve the lightening process in boiling water.

I realy like your work. I had some experience in rit dying knife scales. I will give you some nice tips.Try boiling scale from 45 to 60 minutes in clorox, this will make your starting colour much lighter. This will give better coloring. But make sure to wash clorox well before dying so the dye takes well. Another tip, if you want to remove the dye you did and go back to exact original color boil them in clorox for 45 minutes and wax them with some oil or vaselin. Good luck

Being that people are changing their scales, I think it would be a good idea to have them send you there old scales to test color. Leaving one untouched showing the result, Even showing different color scales being colored the same color to show different shade variations.

Thanks for this, LTK. I"ve always wondered how some base colored scales reacted to some of the different dyes. This gives me a great insight into how they come out. Most of my collection is basically black and grey. Now I feel confident to be able to buy something in a tan or grey or blue and I can modify it to something more interesting.

My god, what an undertaking that was! For the most part I think they all came out pretty amazing. I agree with the consensus that the tropical teal on that Bestech is a standout! I bought a CJRB Maileah in natural G10 for my daughter and we are going to attempt to do a pink gradient die on it this weekend. If that doesn't go well then we will just go for a full dunk solid super pink. Thank you for the outstanding video. Love your channel.

You do not need to take them apart. Just degrease thoughrouly (I use simple green) and use compressed air to blow all remaining water / die out of the knives. Use some food grade mineral oil (the only knife oil you will ever need) on the moving parts afterward and your done. If you like taking apart knives, have fun, its just not required. For some knives with metal liners, they perhaps will be lighter if the back of the scale does not get any die, but it is never a problem to keep making them darker. As I said, no need to disassemble. Me, I have done this on several Spydercos, a few Cold Steels on their FRN and G10. Also a Hinderer with Micarta and it has worked on them all. For compressed air, I use a compressor to dry them out very thouroughly. Lightly boiling water will not untemper any knife steel. Do not let the knife ever rest on bottom of the pot or the FRN can deform.

A trick to help out when the dye comes out somewhat whitewashed or inconsistent is to hit them with a thin layer of clear acrylic spray... it really helps bring out the color. I've also played around with just dropping them in the dye for short periods of time and have come up with some really cool effects like with a sculpted tan G10 scale dyed dark green. It came our green with tan streaks that gives a pretty cool camo look.

Thanks for doing this. I’m partial to red scales. But I thought purple and the teal were really nice. Have you ever went to the Rit site and looked at the formula guide? My next dye project I’m gonna mix colors and attempt custom colors. I’m not an expert either but from my past projects if you leave them in and bring the temp up they turn richer colors. Especially the red, 25 minutes to get a redder red versus a brownish red on say a tan or grey starting scales. I’m gonna attempt a three color blended dip. I saw a video where a guy did one and it turned out cool. That teal one like you said outshined all the others. 🤟🏻
If you’re interested check out my video for the Civivi Wyvern and HoneyBadger. I painted with dye because both those scales were molded and I could get more 3D effects out of the red and black dye.
