He used to be their lead guitarist, but due to some medical condition with his joints (wrists, I belive?), he now does more screaming/harsh vocal, like in this song, and plays a few songs on guitar or plays only the solo like in this song. The same reason is why his guitar is on the stand - to avoid the load on his hands

If I remember correctly, the character is from Final Fantasy 8. The band members are huge video game and anime fans. Quite a few of their songs are about them. Shiren, the guy in red, is the composer and guitarist. He has tenosynovitis, so he had to limit his playing so it would heal. During that time, Jill the violinist took over some of his parts, and it just stuck. He can actually play without the stand now, but still does on occasion for convenience and to prevent recurrence.
