I think this particular variant will be called the A220-500 since theres no -200 or -400 variant, only he -100 and the -300.

A220 has different flight controls than A320 family. Same reason SWA only flys 737s.

I hope Airbus will build the stretched 220 despite the fact that it will compete against the A320. Newer and more efficient designs will win in the long run.

Well, profitability on A220 is really low. Until Airbus can make profit on the Bombardier design, I doubt they’ll commit to design changes.

Airframe manufacturers always consider offering stretched versions. Even back to the days of the DC-1.

Im Januar 2023 sagte Airbus-Marketingchef Christian Scherer, es sei nicht die Frage „ob“, sondern „wann“ der A220-500 kommen werde. It's called intern the A221...

The only reason Airbus has hasn’t launched the A220-500 aircraft is that the program is not profitable yet.

A320 logbooks are too full to place orders. With 737 max delayed production, A220-500 fits right into airlines' desperate moves.

a320 should get the OAP time for the best to take over A220 indeed.

Go for it stretch it to about the MD 80 size with 5 abreast seating you would have something to compete with the 737/700 and it would be newer than the 320

The head of commercial sales told us the answer. Production can't keep up with demand, but capacity is being increased. Only when production is keeping pace with orders will Airbus contemplate announcing the 500. But rest assured, the 500 is already designed.

To increase production slots for A321neo. A321neo overtook A320neo few years ago. Many airlines wanted to order more A321neo, but Airbus slots are only empty 2030s.
Also, the stretched variant would be the most efficient narrowbody jet on the market. Better than A320neo or MAX8.

Of course, they are having trouble ramping up production. Besides depending on Spirit AeroSystems for flight critical components, the A220 has significant engine problems. With EgyptAir selling it's entire fleet.

not necessarily, robust original design will allow stretched version no problem
the A220 design is still practically brand new so there's a lot of life left in it (and the fact it was designed to be stretched in the first place)

Hard to do that with the lack of A320 family production slots and certification issues with the XLR.
