Beautiful, intelligent, captain Samantha Carter stands up to sexism.

- When Samantha Carter is discreditted by her peers for what seemed like male sexism, she responded with witty combacks and a solid intelligence and reason. She defines the graceful, beautiful, sexy, and intelligent woman.
To be fair O'Neil doesn't care about Carter being a woman. He really doesn't like egg heads. The movie and the show goes into details why.
Nailed it.
*INFESTS*
You say that ... but does he say anything about Kawolski and Freddy's sexism here? Nope.

Sorry its been a long time since I've watched Stargate. So I don't fully understand the question.
I do know that in the entire series especially in season one, at one point or another. O'Neil has had beef with every lab coat we see on base at some point. Sometimes we see it, other times the main cast talks about how O'Neil treats them.
If they on base long enough, they all do eventually earn his respect though. We see proof of this in later seasons. Watch how he talks to some of them and then go back watch earlier episodes of how he would talk to them.
@@MurrayTheMac
Is it sexism or are they just having a laugh. Men do it all the time in the service with one other.
Now I get it is a tv series and that would never happen in an official meeting with a general but for entertainment purposes they put it in there.
You would call it sexism I would call it ripping on somebody and the exact same thing could occur with men to men interactions.
I've been looking for this clip for ages! I know the sexism was cheesy, of its time and over-egged for dramatic effect, but I fell in love with Sam Carter when I saw this. At the time there weren't enough strong female leads like her. It's like 17(ish?) years later and I have a PhD and an academic job in a once very male dominated area and looking back realize that she was a positive influence - that even though it was a fictitious example it sunk into my psychological armour if you like! I was so pleased to just see Amanda Tapping being awarded an honorary doctorate herself. Kudos for keeping the clip up!
RobotiSal you say it's overdone but it's almost 100% like every time I ever met new people as a woman with a job in esports.
Instead of arm wrestling I'd challenge them to 1v1 me mid though
RobotiSal I think, looking back, Sam was a critical part of what cemented my psyche in my teen years. This drive to show what women can do (and wipe the floor with the boys when need be) helped me kick a LOT of ass in the 15-1 gender ratio competitive gaming industry, and that drive can be directly chased back to Sam beating the Mongol leader, or this scene, or when she demonstrated her skills on the p90. I wish Star Trek had women characters like this.
@Emperor's Champion you're forgetting the quip from Kawalsky, "of course you go by Sam. "
@Emperor's Champion watch that scene again closely, those men in the room were making derogatory & sexist remarks against Carter because of her gender which Carter then simply retaliated.
Was it really sexism though?
Not sexism, he has a problem with scientist's. .Did you listen?
Owen3 It wasn't O'Neill being sexist, but the guys taunting her in the opening. That's why she said, "don't worry I played with dolls". The other two guys were being sexist, but O'Neill, as you said, just hates egg heads.
@@kariryan7601 she was on Jack because he assumed in the beginning that she was a guy, so he f’ed up there a bit and the snickers from the peanut gallery probably didn’t help her
The other guys are clearly being sexist. Did *_you_* listen?
@@NathanTAKthe guy reminiscing about cool action figures? That he included her in?
I was lmfao when I heard that line for the first time because of RDA being MacGyver before! Most handsome scientist I've ever seen!
0:09 and you never again saw such a snappy salute from O’Neill
Actually to all those, who think Jack was the sexist one, please rewind the video and listen to the two men talking about dolls and flight experience. Their remarks were regarding Sam’s gender, and Jack’s were agains the “eggheads”.
There remarks were a joke and she responded with a remark that cut them down and she also made them laugh with the response she had.
That happens a lot in the military if women want to join they need to understand that is want redblood men are like. They are not cuddly caring types that want to talk about flowers.
He never was.
As far as I know the crew, writers and cast and everyone basically thinks this scene is stupid in the perspective of the whole show. Amanda Tapping soon said "Why can't I just be one of the boys?" and they were all "yeah okay let's just do that'.And it was much better.
And thus they had mocked this scene in later episodes. ALSO: I actually think it was a good thing - it gave her some character development, fitting in process, instead of Mary Sue'ing into cheesy, all sweet relationship.
They mock that scene twice in the latter season of the show. Not only the wording was cringe, it was also completly out of place (O'Neill has a problem with her because she's a nerd, not because of her gender).
@@Dext3rM0rg4n Nerd? Nerds don't fly fighter jets! She is a scientist and Jack doesn't like most of these!
I agree, but looking back I esp appreciate how they established Hammond here, how he didn’t directly address their banter but stated the facts because he knew Sam could handle it shows, in my opinion, that he is a fair Leader through and through. Idk they’re just great characters and I love them 😅
This aired in 1997 and it was common to show women displaying empowerment in this type of matches. Charmed aired in 1998 and Prue (the strongest character) had many episodes with this type of confrontation with men. This is completely normal if you have enough healthy brain to understand zeitgeist.
I kinda love that in one episode "in the past" she was trying out that line and came up that it sounded silly xD
Theoretical astrophysicist. Which means she owns Sheldon and Raj in single session.
much like dr rush, and mckay.
Funny thing: the same line is mocked in one of late episodes by alternate, civilan Carter :D
And in the 200th episode by puppet Carter. ;-)
And it is removed in the Directors Cut of the first episode.
To be fair, it's lines like these that eventually lead to such lines to become obsolete.
The "reproductive organs" line really is cringy ah.
I found nothing wrong with this scene, it’s one of my favorites and is why I didn’t watch the episodes online and have the disc because they always wanna cut ish out that don’t need to be. Jack did assume that she was a guy when first hearing her name and she probably assumed he was using her intelligent as an excuse to not like her. Remember, carter doesn’t know Jack at this point, we do. It was also not great that the other men were taking shots at her because she was a woman or not feminine enough to them because she was in Air Force.
They were not taking shots at her, frankly I think the other guys in the room (including General Hammond, who after all knows she is the brain behind the dialing-computer and the stellar-drift-calculations!) respect her, they are just bantering (they see her as "one of the guys" - something many women claim to want, but too many of them would claim it to be sexist, so it doesn't happen that often, because these days you truly have to be careful to not be accused of sexism!)...Jack is a little sexist here, but I doubt he truly thinks less of women. He just is a bit old fashioned, he was raised differently than many of us, he's older than most of the viewers, too - Women to Jack are probably princesses and he has a hard time adjusting to the fact that not every woman wants that. He is willing to learn, we don't see him treat Sam differently much (till he starts having feelings for her!), so he does adapt!
@@dreamingflurry2729 Jack doesn't like her because she's a scientist, not because she's a woman
I was so confused when I went to rewatch SG1 on Amazon and this scene was missing
If that's true, it's just wrong in so many ways. Fuck not with the SG1!
This show is several years old and back then people didn't get as riled up about these things as they do now so Amazon probably cut it out to keep the SJW from screaming bloody murder. If you watch the show in syndication on Comet or Netflix, the scene is still in there.
@@ilurvemv It is the "Final Cut" from the producers. The producers and actors didn't like that scene. So much that they made fun of it *two times* in other episodes.
@@FabianSchoelzel I personally find nothing offensive with the scenes except for the nudity but then I'm not American and think the outrage and cancel culture thing is completely out of control here. To each their own, I suppose.
@@ilurvemv it really is though! I loved this scene. I took it that sparks were flying between Sam and Jack from the start
Jack and Sam interaction was just as good as Jack and Daniel or Teal'C and Jack. My favorite scenes in the series involves those two.

"Okay, I hate this scene now!"
:D
Exactly!
The version of this episode on Amazon Prime Video has all of the sexism and Carter's comeback lines removed. They also changed the scenes on Abydos where Daniel Jackson refers to Carter as "Captain Doctor".
That is what censorship looks like and it is going to get worse by the way.
Wtf.. they cut this on Amazon? This scene while it sounds awkwardly written is utterly amazing in how it's acted! It tells you everything you need to know about Carter as both a scientist, her role in the military and the history of sexism/misogamy in the military. You get to see casual sexism in how she's assumed to be a man and how women can be forced into awkward places to stand up for themselves. You can tell in her frustration and how she takes control of the narrative with the 'dolls' comment that this is a problem she's handled a million times before. You also see how important it is for women to succeed in the military for her to have a ally who respected her and stood up for her in a room full of men. Carter should not have had to defend herself from the men who are visibly sneering at her jumping on O'Neil's comments as a 'okay' for them to be full on sexist. We learn a lot about O'Neil when he then has to take a step back and redirect his complaint from gender to her job - again assuming she doesn't have military experience because she has a PHD. Removing the scene takes away the start of O'Neil's journey to respect scientists and Carter in particular. Their entire relationship starts in this moment.
This is why I bought the dvd set of the first season, to have the original. To me, it's appropriate for the time the show was produced. I find Amazon's making it pc disgusting.
@@turtlemama888 don’t the PC Feminists love this kinda stuff ???

Sam Carter is so 🔥
You got to love a woman with short hair little to no makeup and she's still 🔥 asf!!!!
Loved her dialog. It was apt and not at all cheesy. It left an impression on all what she is and she lived up to it in stellar fashion over next 10years. Carter and Oneill. What an amazing pair
Did she? Don't get me wrong I love Carters charakter. But this introduction was weak. The people in the room objected to her beeing a scientist without combat experience. Which is a reasonable thing to do if planning something that is basicly a special forces operation deep in enemy territory. Every commander who is not totally incompetent would give her a hard time to see what she is made off. But instead of showing that she is a warrior as much as a scientist she makes it about gender.
@@Ork20111 not at all. She basically responded to O’Neill bringing up gender. Also O’Neill only had her under his command. Jackson was a civilian working in sg1. And kowalsky was soon lost. She is an astrophysicist and her skill was invaluable. She validly pointed out her diff was not in gender and her sex didn’t matter to the mission at all. And she proved herself well over the years
O'Neill SPECIFICALLY complains about the fact that Sam is a scientist. It WAS Sam herself that introduced the issue of her being a woman. O'Neill even tells her that it isnt being a woman that bothers him, it is she is a scientist. At which point, Sam AGAIN makes it a "pissing contest" over gender.
From anyone who paid attention to what the characters actually SAID, the issur of "sexism" was Sam's fault, not O'Neill or Hamond.
Did you not watch the clip? There's several other guys there, and they're pretty clearly sexist.
@@NathanTAK - Yeah, I own the whole series. And again, the issue of sexism is brought up BY SAM! It isn't until AFTER who quip that the others continue to behave the way that she attacked O'Nell for doing when he didn't.
@@herrzimm Sam is the one who brings up sexism directly, but it's _in response to the two dudes being sexist._ It's not out of nowhere.
Jack gets caught in the crossfire, but the fact that *he* wasn't doing anything wrong doesn't mean that she was jumping at shadows.
Sam was not sexist. Kawalasky and other guys was. Just their looks and demeanor and Sam was justified in her defense. ONeill was not sexist but had valid objection not based on gender.
Love how they make fun of this scene later.
I saw nothing wrong with Carter giving those guys a bitch slap for their attitudes, but 2:22 really didn't have to be there. She made her point but that remark was just cringey.
It was cringey but it was funny all the same and even the guys ripping her laughed.
I loved this scene. For me, it was sparks flying between Jack and Sam from the start.
Thank you for sharing this. I loved this scene and fell in love with Carter the first time I saw it. Perhaps she did assume Jack was against her for being female, but that is because she didn't know Jack and males in the military have quite a history of thinking females don't belong there. I was in the Army in the late 90s, early 2000s and encountered those sexist opinions often, although I could hold my own quite well.
No that scene was cringy AS hell IT was way too try hard
I get the line is cheesy, but man I was disappointed it was cut out of the final cut, it just made the whole scene awkward cutting out some good lines and made some weird transitions
As jack makes plainly clear towards the end of the video, this scene is not about sexism. It's about jack's lack of trust in scientists.
Jack's own words: "Oh this has nothing to do with you being a woman. I like women. I've just got a little problem with scientists."
but, way to misinterpret a scene due to your own insecurities.
I'm pretty sure the OP understood the part where he said clear as day he just doesn't like scientists. On the other hand, you seem to not have noticed that in this scene there are other people (other than O'neill) and two of them are making some childish jokes and snickering like they're in the sandbox like "hurr hurr u cant play with us!!1!"
But, way to misintrerpet a scene due to your own inability to watch a 4 minute long scene.

Carter and O'Neill are so hot for each other.
BWAHAHA I remember rewinding 2:22 a million times, guffawing, crying, tears of laughter drenching my cheeks. Soooo so so so poorly written, and it was before the show realized it was a joke and embraced it's cheese-factor so it's all the more hilarious.

Stargate was always ahead of his time. Such a great franchise. #WeWantStargate
The best one !! #WeWantStargate
I'm not sure what the intention of the writers was for this scene but I don't necessarily think this was sexism. Carter comes in with a very prickly "I'm expecting sexism here" attitude right off the bat, which makes complete sense given the extremely macho nature of the military, which was even more pronounced 20yrs ago than it is today. However, none of the characters really give her that. They take the mick a bit and hype up the unpleasantness of gate travel but that's pretty standard for "one of the boys", and from what I've heard even more so in the military.
As for Jack disliking her being a doctor that's pretty typical of practical types, as a coincidence I'm a second year theoretical astrophysics student myself and a lot of the more practical people don't like working with us because it's very common for us to get lost in the weeds of science and theory and be crap in the real world (which in these kinds of scenarios can be deadly). I'm not sure that's what they're going for here as stargate plays pretty heavily into the "genius can do anything sciency" stereotype (in reality people who do heavy mathematical subjects can pick up other technical subjects pretty quickly, as they will already know most of the maths required and they are trained to think a certain way. However, there is still an awful lot of specialised knowledge which still takes a long time to learn) but it makes sense in a real life scenario.
Amanda Tapping disliked this scene, and mocked it in Mobius
I like how jack had misgivings but it was for the same reasons as with daniel. But it helps her alot to be military as well as a scientist.
There was this party - and a male and female soldier were there - arguing about women in the military.
The Female argued that she could do anything the male could do.
The Males response was:
_"OK. Lets pretend one of us is wounded. We'll pretend that you are wounded first. I'll carry you around the block like I was carrying you to an aide station. Then - we'll pretend that I'm, wounded and you carry me around the block like you were carrying me to an aide station."
They didn't even try.
The woman just shut up.
They had these truck drivers. The tires on the trucks were really big. It took 3 men and 5 women to pick up one of these tires.
Three men would get around the tire - one on each side and one in the middle - then they'd turn the tire vertically and mount it on the vehicle.
Fire women could gather around the tire and pick it up - but - they couldn't fit enough of them on the tire when they tried to turn it vertically to put it on the truck.
Queen Elizabeth (who just died) was a truck driver during WWII. She was also trained as a mechanic. She could do that and did.
The American Army wanted to see if they could train a unit of Female Recruits to the same standards as the Male Recruits. So they started trying to do that. All the women had to be sent to a Physical Conditioning Course - where they worked on their upper body strength and any other areas where they had trouble with the Male PT Tests. They succeeded. All the women passed the Male Physical Fitness Standards - and - having become Highly Motivated, understanding the importance of what they were doing - these women were one of the top units of recruits.
There was just one problem. With the addition of the Physical Conditioning Course - that only a few of the males needed - since ALL the Females needed it - it took the Females over twice as long to complete Recruit Training than the Males. That meant - that it cost the Army Twice as much to train a Female to the Standards the Males routinely passed as it did the Males. That was the end of that.
The thing is - Physical (not mental) Super Girls like Samantha Carter can and do exist - but - that doesn't matter. What maters - is what can the average Female do - because what the military needs - is vast numbers of average people.
For anyone who doesn't get it - as written - Samantha Carter - is a Fantasy. Essentially - she's an Amazon. Just the kind of strong, powerful woman - that men fantasize about conquering and subduing.
.
I don't fantasize about conquering amazons. I have far shallower standards. Big chest big behind willing to put out. The rest is irrelevant.

I have to say. I love O'Neil. And Carter. For real.
PS: Don't go down the commentaries. Trust me.
You have understand the nature of the military as it has this whole "you want my respect you earn it type thing, and you need to prove yourself" so all the insults and mockery is really just a way of testing someone's character, if they say to someone your useless as cant do crap and they go off and wine about it then it will show they are right BUT if fight for that respect wither through verbal challenging or their actions then it will show they are someone they can rely on and trust
Thank you someone actually said it

Jack isn't sexist lol he doesn't like scientists he had the same reaction with Daniel and the dialogue proves that when Carter meets Daniel and is use Doctor he says "i thought it you wanted to be call captain"
We know that. Carter wouldn’t know that being this is her first time meeting her and Jack did assume she was a he
This scene was extremely cringeworthy back in the day.
Absolutly not.
I love it when people put up a titel on their uploads that immedeatly tell me they didn't even listen to their own video. O'Neill wanted a warrior not a lab rat. Beeing a women had nothing to do with it. It just took him a moment to understand that Carter is both.
She's just as capable, intelligent and brave as any man.
See her fighting Anubis supersoldier in season 6 or 7, she's wounded and still fights on brillantly.

Such a great show. They should remake it in HD.
You could just have called the video "Original Stargate SG-1 Children of the gods briefing" or something similar.
You know, it's true what Jack said he doesn't have a problem with women, he has a problem with scientists. Jack was not sexist, maybe a little bigoted, but never did I see him as a sexist.
I like the way she pulled rank.
The only problem with this clip is the title. This is effectively banter between a group of highly decorated officers. Each one of them being in that room means they've proven themselves already.
This clip is all of them (including the other guys) assuming Carter was just an egghead, there for technical expertise, not combat expertise, which she quickly explains.
Reminds me a little of that scene in dirty harry, it's not sexism as such. Men respect women who present a challenge and follow through with it, it's not a test, it's more to do with whether or not you can do the job. As opposed to women who whine and bring it down to a battle of the sexes and attempt to better themselves by trying to shame their male peers just for having a penis. Sam Carter is thankfully the former.
reminds of me of that scene in a movie: "what's the difference between a black man and a nigger ?"
a test of character.
All of that saluting they did in the conference room was all wrong. First of all, there is no saluting indoors; the exception is if you are reporting to a superior officer in his office. You stand outside the doorway until you are called in. You stop one step in front of the officer's desk, stand at attention, render a salute and hold it until the officer returns the salute. You remain at attention until he either says "at ease" or "be seated".
Don Davis is not a stuffed shirt weighed down by brass.
I thought some of the dialogue was a bit on the cringe side, not because it was sexist (I know Jack wasn't, he just hates nerds and that's well established through the entire history of the show) but because it was rather..obvious. Imho it didn't age as well compared to the rest of the show as a whole. But there was just enough to know he liked her right away. Best scifi show ever, change my mind.
At least the show had sense enough to know it was cringe. In a later episode there was a callback to Sam's cheesy line about reproductive organs. They poked fun at it.
Incorrect use of sexism, I hereby downvote your video...
"Oh nu everytime I'm questioned it's sexism! No one should question me because I'm a girl!" Glad she didn't stay this idiotic.
Seems that plot point was abandoned in episode 3 and never brought up again thank god
I like Carter, but it needs to be acknowledged how much of a Mary Sue she was. She's literally the only character without a single weakness of any kind. She's always the smartest person in the room, usually by miles, is at LEAST as tough as any hardened Marine and an expert with her trusty P90. You couldn't write a more Mary Sue character if you set out with that as your goal. Only the actress' charisma saves this character.
I dislike Mary Sue's as well as their male equivalent.
They're too perfect, makes it extremely boring. :\
@Joshua Collins
Carter is nothing like a Mary Sue. She is a leading physicists and an egg head and a seasoned officer.
When she is on combat missions she was not the lead nor considered the best. The whole team of SG1 is a fantasy and that includes Daniel Jackson.
Mary Sue characters have no background and are just perfect even Carter needs help from time to time and gets stuff wrong on occasions.
What you are describing is a paragon not a Mary sue. Mary sue literally bend the plot and characters around them to prop them selves up usually the character in question make no effort for this. Carter is neither as her flaws lay in her insecurity as well as her single minded way of thinking both were on display here and both get developed as time progress.
The amount of Times she gets taken over by Aliens beg to differ also the amount of Times she Brings Alien Tech that she says IS perfectly Safe only to wreck the SGC in the Episodes.
What's quite interesting is that while the way Carter talks sounds awkward it's remarkably similar to the way Julia Gillard's famous misogyny speech as Australia's first female prime minister - and being a unmarried women with no children at that! over a decade later. ua-cam.com/video/fCNuPcf8L00/v-deo.html
Now that is a strong female character! Not one of those Mary-Sue-Types that are so common these days! Sam has her problems - she doesn't deal with emotions well, she has daddy-issues - so she's far from perfect, but she also doesn't need or want special treatment (she'd probably tell you where to shove it if offered!)!
Intelligent yes, beautiful Noooooo!!!!!!
Come on, leave this sh*t.
She did not stand up to sexism, it's not about sexism at all. There was a collective which participants know each other and know each other's weak and strong points. And she is just a new guy. For you women out there, in male collective there will always be a checking, are you worthy of respect or not.
THat was just a check. And the way she immediately confronted all assumptions and acted decently made her accepted in the end. Not immediately, for sure, it's not just one check. But for the whole show she was standing tall. In this video, she did all right. She defended her points, she never offended anyone (just picked on immediately detected alpha), and she was professional in her speaking. She did good.
And yes, she's woman, that's why she was looked down on in the military. Because women are physically weaker and not as agile/dextrous as males. And that's where the weak spot is and that's why when woman pretends on man's spot in man's business (war is, because it demands physicality), she will always be treated as weak until prove worthy. As any man on her spot. And proving worthy -- yes, she did!
Forget that sh*t -- sexism, wheeite privelege, other stuff. Don't be a victim, be a human, member of humankind.
Carter honestly looks like O'Neill's ex wife too

don't find anything sexist here, there was bickering, there was pointing out that they assumed someone going by "Sam" would be a guy, which is understandable imo because of the name origin
the scene was intentionally designed in that way to establish her as a strong female character that doesn't take shit from anyone
and if I remember right I read somewhere that Amanda Tapping hated that specific scene because of how Carter reacts as if all of them attacted her for being a woman and she found that scene very unfitting for the character, but I am not sure since it's been a few years
Love at first fight
Then she goes forth into every episode fighting men twice her size in hand to hand combat and winning. To bad its just a TV show girls.
And Teal'c can beat up large groups of men, Daniel can read any language and Jack is a pilot and special forces operator which is not reality either.
Most of the characters are fantasy and entertainment. Carter can beat up men which is unrealistic but she has also been beaten up as have the other characters.

Characters like this have ruined television and cinematic storytelling. And has nothing to do with sexusm...male character like this would be just as annoying
