First time I heard this song was a fan made Suicune video for a Warhammer Faction “The Soldiers of Kreig” a spacefaring culture stuck in WW2 Germany culture, raised in a world of death and war, carried only by the devotion to their God, they believe their is no greater honor than to die in battle and so have no worries or sadness at the concept of dying and greet the battlefield with joy.

@@fist-of-doom487 Same here, then when I heard of the story it was behind, it led me here. Now I'm hooked on Sabaton and their music. Such an inspirational moment of history on when all odds are stacked against them, they used the last ounce of life they had to fight to the end. In memory of those soldiers who became a legend.

It's kinda scary to think about how this must've looked like. A literal army of German soldiers advancing at the fortress and out of nowhere soldiers get mowed down left and right by Russian machine guns, like 100 half dead Russian soldiers rise from their trenches, spitting blood and parts of their lungs, red eyes, bloody tears just charging at these 7000 or so German soldiers.
Honestly can't blame them for throwing their rifles away just running away, stepping over each other, running into their own barbed wire. Just pure panic.

It's worth remembering. Those Germans thought the dead were litterally rising from the earth to drag them to hell as revenge for killing them with gas.
Yeah, fuck that, the hardest men would turn back and run when facing that.

This story reminds me of the battle of Kajmakcalan where the Bulgarians were shocked to see the Serbian flag waving in the wind as they thought they were all dead and that the Serbian army didn't survive the retreat through Albania. It was a very tough battle but eventually the Serbs captured the mountain top and that became the first liberated part of Serbia after 1916.

can you imagine what it must have been like for both sides at this battle?
For the Germans...they're absolutely confident that there is nothing left to face them. They've just watched this...this cloud, this fog, this miasma settle over the enemy positions. They've watched the grass, the trees, the birds, everything living simply DIE as this cloud settles over it. And once it's cleared, they're advancing with 7000 men. the numbers giving them confidence, as is the lack of anything moving ahead of them. The silence, save for the tramp and jingle of 7000 men and their equipment, all muffled and suppressed by the gas masks they're wearing. And when they reach the enemy positions, all seems to be going well...until the first Russian soldier charges out. Seeing what essentially looks like a corpse staggering out, the skin pale, the eyes bloodshot, the cloth mask around their lower face red with blood as this figure lets out a scream of pain, anger, hatred. And then they're joined by others. A small number, but still a small number of enemies who should, by all accounts, be dead. And yet they're not. they're standing before them, still moving, still fighting, even as some of them hack up blood and tissue. They charge, screaming and firing their weapons. And in that moment, sheer terror grips the hearts of the Germans. Because these men can't be living, but they're fighting still. 7000 men, caught in absolute terror, fleeing from what they could only believe to be the corpses of their enemies coming to kill them.
For the Russians...it has to be absolute terror for them when all this starts. They're a smaller force that has been stubbornly holding onto this position to give the main army a chance to retreat. They've been fighting for weeks on end to keep the enemy back. They're tired and hoping that soon they'll be able to withdraw as well, or that the enemy will finally fall back. And then this cloud of death rolls in. They're unable to do anything but wrap cloth around their faces because they have no gas masks. It does very little to help as their eyes and skin burns, as their bodies become wracked in agony, as they stumble through this fog, searching for any kind of relief. Most of them will die. For some, they'll survive. But this is not a blessing. Every moment is pure agony, trying to breathe, trying to move, trying to even think. They're hacking up parts of their own lungs and throats as they struggle to live. And then across the no-man's land comes a force of over 7000 soldiers. Imagine in that moment, the pain, the fear...but also the anger and hatred they must have felt. Here comes the soldiers who inflicted this on them. In that moment, there is nothing left to lose, and everything to gain, as those with enough strength charge out, firing their weapons, screaming all of their hatred and anger and pain at their enemies. The living dead, giving their last to drive the enemy back.
This battle, I think, shows both the absolute horrors humanity can inflict upon each other...but also the strength and resolve of the human spirit, where even in the absolute worst adversity, can still find the strength to rise and overcome.

For Russians it was done for, nobody from the Osowiec fortress who didn't flee before the chemical gas actually has died... All of the soldiers there, well not all but like what 100-200 died 2 times that day... That bitter strenght and love for their homeland made them do the final push... They knew they were to die there on that battlefield, why not do it twice? That why I will always salute Russians and their bravery in all wars, from first till end of second, there's so much stories and their will to protect what's theirs its unreal, it's different nowadays but old ussr/russia was the shit man...

This inspired a bit of world-building in my D&D universe of Soma. A group of gnolls attacked a fortress at a strategic point known as the White Pass by burning a toxic tree called boilwood, then enlisting a druid to redirect the winds and blow the smoke into the fortress. If you're familiar with what happens when you burn plants like machineel or poison ivy, you can see how horrible this would be.
However, they were not anticipating the presence of a cleric of Maurn, the god of militiamen, conscripts, veterans, and war dead. With the last of his strength, he prayed to his god that his men would last just long enough for relief to arrive. And when the gnolls breached the fortress, they were met not with dead and dying soldiers, but revenants dead-set on protecting the valley beyond the fortress, shrugging off the fact that their skin was literally blistering off their bodies. Most of the gnoll tribe retreated in terror, while the chieftan, a proud berserker, fought viciously, until he was finally dragged down and decapitated.
And three days later, relief arrived to find the garrison in full dress uniform, with regulation graves already dug. They handed over the log book for the fortress, gave a final salute, and all collapsed dead on the spot.

After that, we NEED a reaction to the Russian cover, which, with the participation of Sabaton, was released by the performer Radio Tapok a day earlier than the original.
The cover uses the film "Attack of the Dead" about these events from the Wargaming company.

As ai writ in previous Sabaton reaction, if you are a patriot as i listen you said many times, and liked this style, you MUST react to "To hell and back" and "82 all the way", first one tells the storie of Audie Murphy, the most decorated US soldier in WW2. Second one its an homage to USA Sergeant Alvin York, an USA soldier from WWI, also both are terrific power metal songs!!
