- Retevis sent me this great little handheld to review, The RA 685 is a super first time radio for the newbie or for anyone that needs a budget duel bander.
This simple no nonsenses analogue radio works out of the box, is simple to program and use, best of all its great value for money at around £40 to £50 that's less than the FT-4XE from Yaesu and only a couple of quid more than the cheapest Baofeng (prices at the time of upload)
Dual band Ham band Radio: 144-146MHZ(RX/TX) 430-440MHZ(RX/TX)
See website for details

This video/upload is my view of the RA685, I am not paid, sponsored or affiliated with Retevis in any way. Hope you enjoy...
Just for fun
Please subscribe and like.

Now I can use my Retevis... because of you, now I can use the factory for TX. Thank you!
2:53 "Does feel quite firm and wonderful in the hand"...
Sampled and looped over a beatbox rhythm. My new ringtone 😆

I always wince when well known UA-camrs are sent products to review... but yours was a proper review with some depth rather than fan boy PR praise. Putting the product on a spectrum analyser was insightful and I am sure the cleanliness of the signal will encourage sales of the radio. Thanks, Mike and best 73.
Many thanks
Thanks for the no nonsense review. I was looking to dip my toe in V/UHF and your review helped given the large variety of similar radios. Anyway Amazon had this on offer today )03/07/2023) for £36 and I bought one. Here goes. Cheers.
I too have one of these and state cstagorically that it leaves Baofeng 9’s & 5’s trailing in itsafter dust cloud.
If you haven’t got one YOU NEED ONE…………NOW .

Looks to be a good little radio, Mike. i recently acquired a radiodity gd77. At present its getting more use than my id52.
yep this one too
Hello Mike, Another interesting video. It looks similar to the UV5R Bofango but slightly longer and better built.
I've been messing around with HTs lately and bought an old TYT MD-380 analogue/digital radio which let's you use a toolkit to access things like promiscuous mode and even decryption of basic privacy encryption.
I had an anytone D878UV plus which was decent for both modes and bands (VHF / UHF) There was too much going on with it for me.
This radio here although not a digital radio is a decent entry level HT for beginners and pros alike wanting to break away from the baofeng scene.
Thanks For Sharing.

Nice video mike ... same baofeng type menu settings ect but looks a bit better build quality and the screen looks a little bigger and better aswell 👍
Totally agree
You were right Mike, it's a FINE video!! :)
Thanks!
I was quite certain the was a baofeng in sheep clothing but wow that is clean, I guess here goes another few quid.
Thank you for the review
Very welcome,
Hello. thanks for the review. You forgot to mention the near emission detection feature. something like a frequency counter - it detects the frequency and subtone and saves to memory when you press the menu button. in general, I really liked the station, I didn’t even want to give it back to a friend after the field days. this is not an rda - this is a new beken chip with the better sensitivity and selectivity. and one more thing, unfortunately , usb C is only for charging, the programming is via old kenwood connector. Battery life is good. Nice working horse
Many thanks
Thanks for the review, especially taking a look at the output (I believe some of the Chinese cheapies aren't that clean).
You bet
Mike, you need to do a harmonics comparison video of these cheap handies.. Prove to folks that some are utter sh1t :)
Bloody good idea
Uv5 Looky likey
It looks like a Ksun I have
Hi ?! Is that the same programming as the baofengs
a lot like the baofeng firmware
uv5r plus ➕ ➕ money
How do you reverse the modification?
Will it scan in memory mode and is the backlight meant to stay on when receiving a signal ?
I think so.
Bit of a missed opportunity to include a data connection with that USB port.
Prob just for charging
Missed indeed Paul, still a good handheld for the money.. :)
I'm so confused. All of these brands and they seem to be the exact same radio. I am looking for an inexpensive mobile dual band radio for the pickup truck and I am finding he same thing. Much be one plant building these radio and folks are popping them into different cases.
At this price range they are all much of a muchness
Thats a nice rip off of a baofeng uv5r
Gifted?
Lol that's a rebranded baofeng
Not with a clean signal like that, if you've not seen a baofeng on a spectrum analyzer there are videos on yt you'd have to agree its something different whilst cheap as chips and very similar.
