      The only reason they have that sort of power is the proprietary software they offer, in my opinion. Rather than buying a tractor, you're buying the software package for yield monitoring, GPS mapping, autosteer, etc. The thing is that most of the software isn't that complicated. If Farmer Joe down the road had a son taking a BSci in computer science who actually had some work ethic, Farmer Joe would be set. I had a feeling that if more farmers pooled some cash together and worked with open source software developers, they could make pretty workable alternatives. Sure, JD would probably come out with new software with flashier features just to tempt people to buy their new expensive garbage, but you'd still basically be able to do everything they do. A huge advantage, though, of those huge tractor companies is how much yield data they've collected, which they can use to optimise everything. There's no easy solution, I guess, but supporting local initiatives would sure help break the monopoly. We used to have a lot of domestically produced tractors. Now they're all American, European, or (in the case of Versatile) Russian.

How about building good quality parts that last longer and can be fixed if they do fail so you don't have to get an entirely new or reman component that had to get shipped from Mexico/China/Etc. I worked for two different dealerships that sold YBTC equipment. I started out as a mechanic, then to service manager, then to salesman, then to sales manager, and finished up as store manager. That span was 25 years and 62 days. Then I semi retired. Between my sons and I we own 132 pieces of YBTC equipment. The oldest being a 1937 tractor(our family owned since new) The newest is a 4 year old round baler. Right after we got that baler our local dealer got bought out by a 28 store chain. The parts prices jumped right away. The shop rates went up 50% in two years. 75% of our parts are now bought from after market suppliers. Using your alternator as an example, you can buy two of them without any warranty and still be cheaper than the YBTC company's one remanufactured alternator.
    P.S.A few years ago we replaced our combine and it was with a red one. First time since 1958 that a YBTC combine did not harvest our crop.

    • @JDseller1
      @JDseller1 2 роки тому +12

      @@oilplug Do you know anything about the internal politics at YBTC corporate????
      You start/own a YBTC dealership and build it up over your life time. Then when you decide to sell your store or even pass it on to your family YBTC "tells" you who you can and who you can not sell or transfer "YOUR" dealership to. In the store I worked at YBTC would not allow the sale to a group of employees and customers. We had double the required capital reserves but the YBTC territory manager wanted the dealership to sell to another store. That store did buy the dealership but ended up having to sell all their stores 4 years later due to financial problems.
      YBTC also changed the dealership contract 17 years ago to favor multi dealership groups. This has has added to the pressure a single store Dealership faces. As of right now I only know of ONE single store dealership in the three state area around where I live.
      So the good or bad of your local dealership does not have much to do with whether or not your local store will stay the same.

    • @disturbedcarrot
      @disturbedcarrot 2 роки тому

      @@JDseller1 YBTC is meant to be better than the red variety for limiting the size of multi dealerships. Also, YBTC have a better rep for sorting out issues for customers than red. Plus they have better parts support for older equipment. And I'm a red fan.

    • @JDseller1
      @JDseller1 2 роки тому +7

      @@disturbedcarrot YBTC actively pushes for larger dealership groups. Their sales volume payments/bonuses are a huge way they do this. They have raised the minimums to start to get payments to where smaller dealership groups, can easily be getting 4-5% less than larger dealership groups.
      So when this effects the smaller dealership's profitability YBTC comes in and tells that dealership they have to get bigger or sell out. The YBTC limits who they can sell to. I have family in Southern Ohio. AG Pro is buying any dealership they can get their hands on. A very good 4 store group, got forced to sell just a few years ago. The groups options was to sell to Ag Pro or no longer be a YBTC dealership. No other dealership group would be approved by YBTC. AG Pro has over 80 stores now. First thing they did is to charge 10% over suggested dealer list for parts.
      I will readily admit YBTC has a superior parts network. You can get parts faster and for older stuff than with CIH or AGCO.
      The main trouble is YBTC is creating monopolies in areas for "new" equipment. Right now I set in the middle of an eleven store group. If I would want to go 100 miles away to buy new YBTC would not give that dealership the same sales incentives as the chain where I live. So YBTC is trying to force us to buy off this group. So there is zero free market.
      We went a different route. Three years ago we switched to CIH combines. We have four different dealership groups (within 70 miles) that can give us pricing with all of them working off the same sales incentives.
      This coming spring there will be two new Blue corn planters setting in our shed. YBTC thinks they can force us farmers to bend a knee to them. Well in this family YBTC is losing that bet. The sad part is that for 70 years this family was really loyal to YBTC. YBTC does not think families like mine are the future of farming so they seem to not care if we do business with them or not. My family bought this farm in 1847. I have four sons farming with eight grand sons kicking. I think we will be here in the future. Who knows that about YBTC>

It has an alternator manufactured by the DENSO company of Japan. These are pretty good, but anyone with a Dodge knows that when they finally up and die, you’d best have saved up some pennies, because they are a tad pricey. This one was $750 US dollars list price. The dealer didn’t charge that, and even delivered it right to me because their delivery guy was “going that way” in a half hour. Having neither the cat or dog along for the ride, I did the replacement myself. In the truck world, you usually get a year of warranty on dealer parts, and usually they last well beyond that anyway.

    Very often, the alternators that went into your tractor and light aircraft are exactly the same as the ones that went into cars. Just different paper work for aircraft. It be even cheaper than $275 if you can find out which component failed inside the alternator, the major components inside are the stator,(a big ring of copper coil) rotor, bearings, brush assembly , voltage regulator (if internal) and diode set. The whole alternator are being held together with just a few bolts and my prime suspect would be the diodes, held by another couple of bolts. The bearings would be obvious enough, and usually , it is the front bearings. You will hear noise, and feel it if you turn the pulley by hand. Cost like lunch money to buy new ones. For some Delco units , you need a wire or paper clip through a hole to keep the brushes away while you put the alternator casing together, don't forget to pull the clip out later. The smart ones also mark the casing with a marker before splitting it for proper orientation when you re assemble it.

    What's worse is all that usually fails in an alternator is the electronic module that''s probably only a few diodes but they seal it with epoxy so you need to buy a whole alternator, where the "re-manufacturing" process is really a 5 minute module swap. Electronics failure is the keystone of planned obsolescence.

    The YBTC also does forestry equipment. The parts price and availability are terrible. A lockout valve for our knuckle boom loader for the stabilizer legs is $2000 (USD). There are 4 of them on the machine. The valve will fit in the palm of your hand. It's outrageous!!!

    Whew, lot of anger coming through in this video! I'm not a tractor user even, but I've been picking up a lot of dissatisfaction with the UBTC lately. UBTC better get more user friendly, before they loose all the goodwill they've built up over the years, if they haven't already. UBTC, you're on a downhill slide right now, corrective action is called for! Tractor users are a creative and "make do" bunch - they will "make do" you right out of business if you don't straighten up!

    I’m not a farmer but I have worked many a fall for a buddy back home in Saskatchewan who is a farmer/rancher and he’s a big YBTC supporter, 98% of his equipment is YBTC. This is where I grew my affinity for the YBTC. I had moved and changed vocations about 20 years ago and this spring I decided to upgrade my YBTC lawn tractor to a sub-compact with a backhoe, mower deck and snow blower from YBTC. The salesman wouldn’t even take the time to do a proper quote, he gave me some scribbled numbers on a sticky note…..I know that YBTC typically sell themselves based on colour and reliability but come on…….. Great work QDM, I really enjoy your video’s, they take me back home to Sask…..bunny hug’s, Ice cold Pil or the odd time Boh!

    No wonder farmers soon become mechanics.
    Or they would all soon be in a panic.

    Without having to worry about part replacement stuff..
    So, do the math, and think it through.

Found manufacturers label and rang them in Melbourne (international company). Got very helpful person on line this is what he said. Tractor co paid for tooling dies and got X number made and then took dies. If manufacturer could make motor they would charge about $650 AU (500 US). So then rang tractor co. Their price over $1600 AU. HOWS THAT FOR A RIP-OFF

    Haha love the video. On a side note though. As on-road (seasoned) mechanic myself. The right thing to do on a alternator replacement job, is to check the battery and clamps as well. This includes physically checking the electrolyte level and CLEANING the battery posts. Half of the alternators I replace are failed due to shitty batteries or those bolt on battery clamps. Alternators are NOT generators and heavily rely on a good connection and prevent constant heavy draw. They are maintainers not chargers.
    Like NEVER charge dead batteries with them.

  • @albertapipeliner4264

    It is all about not paying the warranty. The alternator is just a small piece of the big pie. Big corporations do not wanna make it easy to collect warranty because everybody would do it then and they would lose millions. Corrupt ain't it. They are not the only ones that do this every corporation in the country does the same thing.

    So I grew up on the farm and was taught from a young age that the engineers that design equipment have no concept of being able to make anything repairable. They only think about how t make the product with no after-thought to repairs. So I went out and became and engineer in the hopes of changing this stigmatism. Unfortunately most engineers live in an office and stay in front of a computer doing their craft. Should have a requirement of so much field/in use time to keep your job. Thank you QD PS, I went into the Oilfield where you still fix stuff with a hammer and a big wrench.

      Shop rate is ridiculously low. Good mechanic earns $35-45 an hour. Service truck rigged out is at least $300 000. Your going to invest another $50 g in training,laptops, software, insurances, Burn through a set of tires a year diesel $2 plus dollars a litre. Lot of jobs have to go right to pay for that. It has to be passed along. While competing against other brands and independents

If I had a nickel for every time I had to push these companies just to honour (something they don't have), the products, displayed warranty, I'd have enough to buy a new alternator (installed).
