We did this in March 2020 just before the pandemic. Richelieu is the best, perhaps on the planet. Crazy beautiful. You have some really nice video here. Great job!
Thank you for making this video! Very relaxing. I wonder if you could post one with just the natural sounds of scuba diving? I think hearing the breathing in bubbles would be even more relaxing. Again thank you so much for your work in producing this video!
Thank you so much!! I really appreciate it!! 🥰😊 All of my videos start out with the natural sounds, but unfortunately with open circuit scuba, it sounds awful after a few minutes. 😫😢 If it wasn't so expensive and complicated, we would switch to closed circuit rebreathers, and it would sound better.
Thanks!! I hope you have a great trip! I used an iPhone 13 Pro with a DiveVolk housing and a Light & Motion Sola light (one of my Sola lights died on the first dive of the trip).
Thank you! iPhone 13 Pro in a DiveVolk 4 housing. One of my lights died on my first dive, so any of the lighted shots are with just one L&M Sola. Some shots had enough natural light.
This has always been my dream, but I've been advised against scuba diving for medical reasons. Breaks my heart when I can only do snorkeling or free diving. Feel like I'm missing so much 😪
Yes, I had a Light & Motion Sola light. The coral close up with illumination, and the unlit blue water behind in the distance, makes those pinks, oranges and reds really pop. 🥰
Amazing video, revealing the beauty of those amazing reefs. I am visiting Thailand soon and I want to dive on the Similan Island. Is it possible to do that as a beginner? I only passed my Open Water Diver a couple of months ago and heard about strong current. How deep have you been on an average? Thank you so much!
The currents in the Similan Islands are generally not bad, and depth will max out at 30 meters, but most dives are in the 20-25m range. I would suggest getting your Advanced Open Water before or during your trip to the Similans. Most liveaboard operators in the area will teach it, and Nitrox (which I also recommend), while you are diving in the Similans, but make sure to book that with them ahead of time. I'd recommend the Junk or the Phinisi, but there are several good options you can find on liveaboard.com. Have a great trip!! 🥰
@@skipmcilvaine they do get bad. I know Thai guides who dive similans for a living and they all warned me about currents being really strong. It is no wonder, if you look how they are located geographically
Great video! We are planning to go to Thailand and Similand Islands at the end of this year for scuba diving. You mentioned that most of the footage from this video is from Richelieu Rock. Would you still recommend Similand Islands then?
Thanks! Yes, Richelieu Rock, while not technically part of the Similan Islands, is pretty much always included in a Similan Islands scuba liveaboard itinerary. The Surin Islands are also included in a Similan Islands itinerary, and Koh Bon and Koh Tachai are excellent dive spots as well. If you book a liveaboard to the Similan Islands longer than 3 days / 3 nights, you are pretty much guaranteed to dive Richelieu Rock more than once. 😊
Thank you! I use an iPhone 13 Pro, with a DiveVolk housing, with Light & Motion Sola lights. One of the lights died at the very beginning of my first dive, so this was just with one light.
@@skipmcilvaine Thanks for the video. Do you recommend the handle and 2 lights, or light setup with only 1 light and divevolk housing? With the tray and lights, one need lots of buoyancy aids.
@@mountains-to-the-sea Personally I prefer two lights. I often only use one, but when I can use two, I have better options for filming closer sealife and coral. One light from the right or left on a close-up subject will create a fairly undesirable shadow, that you can then "fix" with the second light, as long as you have articulated arms to spread the lights far enough apart. I use two of these on each side to try and reach a neutral buoyancy of the camera, lights, housing, tray and handles. And with two on each side, each with ball mounts and clamps, I can move each light anywhere I want. www.backscatter.com/Nauticam-90x170mm-Carbon-Fiber-Float-Arm
Did Richelieu ten year ago in 2014. It was & is still truly beautiful. Thank you for refreshing my memories with your lovely video 🥰
Fantastic Skip. Good to see the big school of Long Nosed Emperor Fish & Rainbow Runners at Richelieu :)
Richelieu is truly magical in ways that can’t be explained, only experienced. This video is very well done. Nice work.
Great music and composition. Excellent understanding of light and setting up scenes and themes. Truly enjoyed watching!
Thank you so much for your wonderful feedback! 🥰 I really appreciate it! 😁
Absolutely gorgeous photography! I just dove it this week, saw most of what you filmed. Thank you!
Thank you! 😊
Awesome video. We're going to visit these dive sites next year. 👍👍👍👍👍👏👏👏👌❤

Great video, especially the clip of the swimming feather star early on!
Thanks!
this dive site is so beautiful. how i wish i could film this place
awesome pictures you caught there Skip! having lived in this area it felt a bit like coming home. keep up the good work.
Thanks! Hope you get a chance to come back and dive here soon. 😊
Wow!!! so amazing I love it..
Thanks! 😊
Love it 🥰🐠👍

Amazing video 😍 how much does it cost?
@@pj3231 Thanks!! Prices and schedules for The Phinisi and The Junk are here: thejunk.com/liveaboard-schedules/
Beautiful videos, may i ask what camera for the dives? And did u apply torch light for most of the shots? Thank you so much

great shots, what do you film with?

Amazing an iphone. I will go there soon. I hope my gopro can compete. 😊
Great Video.

How did you make the colour of the coral pop? Did you take an underwater light source?
Yes, I had a Light & Motion Sola light. The coral close up with illumination, and the unlit blue water behind in the distance, makes those pinks, oranges and reds really pop. 🥰
@@skipmcilvaine it sure does. I just dove the barrier reef in QLD and the colours were muted. I noticed the difference.

I went on the Phinisi. You want the "Similan and Surin Islands" itinerary. Email dive@masterliveaboards.com Have fun!!
hi, which months you take this video in similan?
8 - 12 January... the Similans are best late December until early March. Before mid-December the weather is too unpredictable.

strong currents? richelieu was definetely the best out of the similans and surin
There can be, but in the 5 days I've been there, and the 12 times I've dived there I've never seen / felt any.
