I had to learn to slow down...way down...literally focus on one small thing at a time. And that snowballed to getting more done quicker. It's weird but works. I like that meditation workbook called 30 Days to Overcome Procrastination by Corin Devaso.
I have been on the same chapter for 8 months. Rewritten for more than a 1 million words worth and counting. That's all I've been doing, my sole work, haven't really talked with another human being in 6 months. And after 12 years of writing. God have mercy.
If you have a block do something else! Get a job to earn money. And also to gain the new experiences your imagination needs. It isn't a tragedy not to write. There is a glut of books on the market, but not of original ideas. Get some out there in the real world!
None of these people understand that procrastination comes from fear. Until you work out where the fear comes from, you will struggle to overcome the block.
Are you sure? Alan Moore's understanding of procrastination seems to be it’s about apprehension and avoidance. You can use the word fear if you want to boil it down to the core emotion, but I think it’s clear what he's talking about.
Well, in reality it doesn't matter if one understands where it comes from. Understanding the source or the reason or the cause is an interesting information for self-exploration, but no matter if we find out all the above and if we understand the mechanism behind it, it won't make it go away. If it is a behavior we perpetuated for many years, it will have the added challenge of learning to change something of a habit, almost a reflex when encountering a certain trigger. That is one of the most common myths. We still have to work through it, tolerate the discomfort and make the good choices. That is actually the big "secret".
It doesn't what are you talking about? I procrastinate cos I want to enjoy products that I bought and are already made for me to enjoy. No fear involved.
My procrastination doesn’t come from fear at all. Saying it comes from fear for everyone sounds like a generic social media influencer blurting a generic phrase. Mine comes from laziness, a want to do something more interesting, and/or unsatisfied with what I have already written and unable to get a spark of new inspiration. I actually wholeheartedly agree with the speakers. I have a massive WANT to get my novel finished and that gets me excited. But I have always had the trope of being unable to focus on a single massive projects/tasks. I have friends on the spectrum who are exactly the same.
I really needed to hear these words. I’ve been struggling with a mix between procrastinating and writers block since before Covid hit. At first I thought it was my migraine medication, because the flow and connections and the words just stopped coming. Then I thought maybe it was anxiety from the news or social media… I’ve since cut myself off from all of those external emotional distractions that just kill creativity, but I was still struggling. I really don’t know what it is, it could be everything they just said. But I really miss writing and as a discovery writer it was a thrill when the subconscious connections were made within the story that I hadn’t even realized until I reread it. I’m several books in to a fantasy series. I know where it’s going and I’m excited to get there. I just need to get into that chair and start connecting those dots no matter how many times I have to backspace over the terrible sentences that need to be purged first. This came to me when I really needed it. Thank you ☺️
Same. Sometimes I listen to ambient music to help me focus on the story. I practice with dialogue prompts and a few ideas prompts as a warm up. As I continue doing this every day, I start to form ideas.
I like how it goes normal chair, normal chair, and then Alan Moore has like a throne.
For me it was more like normal lovely person, normal lovely person, wisened old wizard.
And yet that's the chair that fits him, for he's a king.
Alan is unbelievable. Always esoteric yet practical.
