I think every (or at least most) fathers knows this feeling really well, but hearing Emily say it about Sue, is one of the coolest lines in this show. If the only thing you knew about their relationship was that interaction, you really wouldn't need anything else. You really can't have a deeper relationship with someone than that with someone and it would be difficult to impossible to explain that feeling to someone who has never experienced it, but Bryan Adams came close with "...when you can see your unborn children in her eyes".
Ella and Hailee's acting is so nuanced; both of them wish for the baby to be Emily and Sue's, to be a family, to get married, etc. but their outlooks contrast with one another. That is, while Sue is wishful and dreamy, like she can play pretend and be somewhat satisfied, Emily feels hurt and jealous every time Sue mentions the baby or paints that impossible picture because she knows it's all fantasy and she can never have Sue the way Austin does. Sure, Sue loves Emily. However, not only hiding but never being able to show off the one you love most is a terrible circumstance to bear, especially when you know it'll be that way forever. I also love how Emily tries her best to show support and keep loving Sue beyond her betraying her with her brother by doing it when she claimed to love Emily. You can hear jealousy and hurt in Emily deflecting Sue's idea of them being a family by saying she never wanted children. Emily constantly remarks the baby is not hers but Austin's, she pulls back as if wanting to not get sucked into an illusion. What a magnificent show.
That’s a beautiful way of describing what’s going on and it honestly helps me understand the complexity of their relationship more because it did confuse me as to why Emily seemed so in and out in season 3 but with your explanation it makes so much sense to me now
I loved poem before but not as much as I do when I'm watching this show I think I wrote 20 plus poems season 1 alone and like emily I have a full drawer full of poetry♥️
The little smile on their faces when this scene is just starting and they're holding hands... it makes my heart so warm! P.s (I speak Spanish, so my English is really awful)
is there anything cuter than pregnant Sue, sitting there, with that big belly, telling Emily without blinking, “ it doesn’t change anything, i only love YOU” 🥰, Also love the subtle changes and reactions on Sue’s face when Emily says she wants to make out and calls Sue Hot, you see the spark it sends her, ughhh still mourning this show ending but re watch often. These two still get me through tough and lonely times. ❤️✌️🌈!
