I share a very similar story. From high school, did some cpa while teaching myself basic coding (I was writing code on a paper, then I would carry the paper to a cyber cafe and try it on notepad 🤣. I was coding in C). Went to JKUAT to do CS and was teaching at a secondary school back in my village in thika @5k too 😀. To top on the similarity, I'm also a competitive swimmer with several medals (learned this from river athi). First forward to now I am not yet in big tech, but am a senior SE at a pharma startup. All I can say about the journey is consistency, not giving up and always improving on what you learn. From writing code on paper, I am commenting on this using a descent, high-end laptop.
Haha your story isn't that different from mine,I also began by writing C++ codes on paper I actually mastered C++ without ever having a personal laptop 😂😂😂
I am a software engineer as well who is always encouraging people to learn. The best thing about software engineering is that you can switch to it from any other degree or even if you didn't go the university, you can still do self-study and become really good at it so that you can get employed in those big companies. What matters in software engineering most is the skills you have, and what you can do. In fact, someone who never went to the university but has a passion for learning can rise to the level of Senior Software Engineer above his colleagues who went to the university.
@@flexfam3972 Those are the kind of questions I was asking myself when I was just starting out. If you ask me now, I would tell you that each programming language is important. Programming language is just a tool for implementing something. Take one programming language and go deep. Just dedicate yourself to that language and become a master in it. One mistake that many people starting out with programming do is to learn a little-bit of many programming languages and frameworks but master none. Nowadays, people like those guys who are really good at what they are doing. So, If you would like to become a web-developer, whether frontend or Backend, JavaScript is a MUST. For the backend, you may consider learning Python, GoLang, PHP. If you want to get into mobile app development, consider learning Java, Kotlin and/or Dart. For data science and machine leaning, Python , Julia, etc should be on your list. Once you understand the concepts of one language. It would be easier for you to learn any other language.

😂😂😂 I like this guy. His thought process is similar to mine- just two weeks ago I build a police criminal records system with only HTML and CSS knowledge- had to learn PHP and My SQL in three days and the project was only 10 k. Motivation is poverty guys 😂😂
I started learning coding by myself in 2016 while still in campus.. never stopped. It becomes very easy to learn and write any language once you grasp a single language properly
@@mulinyanimrod8568 Back in 2016 a friend of mine who was in his final semester coding his project gave me some Html & Css tutorials done by bucky roberts so i watched the tutorials built my first simple webpage nikaona coding sio ngumu vile lecs walikuwa wanafanya tuone.. The only way to get really wealthy from all this software building is to build your own software, i.e. the easy part, then the hard part marketing it. Converting all those lines of code into cash! and Oh yeah, very true, coding is a hobby, NOT a career. so don't make a mistake joining this world if you are career-oriented.
I appreciate these interviews. I feel it would be far reaching if it had less local language used. But maybe the plan was to create it for the local people.
