Taylor is, without doubt, one of the finest lyricists in the modern era. Her ability to tell a story with her lyrics is amazing - she is a lot like Dolly Parton in that regard.
This song will truly never go out of style. She is literally a mastermind. The story, the allure, the chords, the uncertainty, the simplicity and aesthetic. It's brilliant.

Rewatching all Speak Now videos. Wow what a trip down memory lane, I forgot there was a MV for this song. I’ll never get over the fact this and the entirety of the album is self written. It blew my mind then and it blows my mind now. A living legend.
Speak Now TV is entirely self written. The song "If This Was A Movie" was originally in the deluxe edition of the OG Speak Now & had a co-writer; it's why when she rereleased the song, she did so as a single with the Fearless TV album cover cuz she wanted the entirety of her version to be entirely self-written.
I swear this is the most underrated song of Taylor's whole career. It has great lyrics, an infectious melody and instrumentation, perfectly capturing how it feels to be alienated from someone you used to be close to. She even released it as a single (her very first solo single not to be sent to country radio, but to the pop format, even before I Knew You Were Trouble) but it failed, I don't know why.
If you break this song down it’s SO much more powerful. Just reading the lyrics without the upbeat, catchy tune and really letting them sink in like poetry….i’m not gonna lie it stings a little. This is for the relationships that you thought would last forever, or at least would have a happy ending but now you see each other and just feel agony, knowing that you once knew everything about each other and were so close, and now you just bring up a cordial smile and act like nothing ever happened. One of the hardest things to do. This song’s peppy melody and music combined with the heart-pouring lyrics prove that Taylor has always been a musical mastermind with depth and SO much talent. This will always be one of my favorites💜
I remembered my 16 year old self singing along to this wholeheartedly even though i haven’t experienced being in a relationship yet. And almost 10 years later, I still haven’t been in a relationship but still singing this song to my heart’s content.
Everyone's talking about how "I used to know my place was a spot next to you, but now I'm searching the room for an empty seat" is an echo to Lover's "At every table, I'll save you a seat", but no one is talking about the evolution of the sentence. In The Story of Us, Taylor is counting on the guy to find a seat, she's relying on him. Whereas in Lover, she is whole and she can find her seat alone, but chooses to have someone (Joe) next to her.
I don't read that line like that at all. It's more metaphorical (imo). She isn't counting on anyone to save her a seat, she simply knew that her place was beside him (and vice versa) and that's suddenly gone, so she feels lost and alone.

I used to think one day we'd tell the story of us
How we met and the sparks flew instantly
People would say, "they're the lucky ones"
I used to know my place was a spot next to you
Now I'm searching the room for an empty seat
'Cause lately I don't even know what page you're on
Oh, a simple complication
Miscommunications lead to fall out
So many things that I wish you knew
So many walls up I can't break through
Now I'm standing alone In a crowded room
And we're not speaking and I'm dying to know
Is it killing you like it's killing me yeah
I don't know what to say since the twist of fate

How I was losing my mind when I saw you here
But you held your pride like you should have held me
Oh, I'm scared to see the ending
Why are we pretending this is nothing?
I'd tell you I miss you but I don't know how
I've never heard silence quite this loud
Now I'm standing alone in a crowded room
And we're not speaking and I'm dying to know
Is it killing you like it's killing me yeah
I don't know what to say since the twist of fate
When it all broke down and the story of us
Looks a lot like a tragedy now
This is looking like a contest
Of who can act like they care less
But I liked it better when you were on my side
The battle's in your hands now
But I would lay my armor down
If you'd say you'd rather love than fight
So many things that you wish I knew
But the story of us might be ending soon
Now I'm standing alone in a crowded room
And we're not speaking and I'm dying to know
Is it killing you like it's killing me yeah
I don't know what to say since the twist of fate
When it all broke down and the story of us

"This is looking like a contest of who can act like they care less" Why are we so anxious to conceal emotions..
I know it's ridiculous people have emotions but yet I still do it maybe because you don't want to look weak or look like you care incase they don't.
We think that we would lose power if we show that we care, so we just pretend we don't even when we do..
That depends where your from i guess...i'm from switzerland, we like to show emotions trough a filter and not to much at all because thats what crazy people do....at least what i believe of my people.....i'm crazy and show all kind of emotions, i really am i have it on paper ;)

the "next chapter" is so cute
I used to think one day we'd tell the story of us
How we met and the sparks flew instantly
People would say, "they're the lucky ones"
I used to know my place was a spot next to you
Now I'm searching the room for an empty seat
'Cause lately I don't even know what page you're on
Oh, a simple complication
Miscommunications lead to fall out
So many things that I wish you knew
So many walls up I can't break through
Now I'm standing alone In a crowded room
And we're not speaking and I'm dying to know
Is it killing you like it's killing me yeah
I don't know what to say since the twist of fate
When it all broke down and the story of us
Looks a lot like a tragedy now next chapter
How'd we end up this way?
See me nervously pulling at my clothes
And trying to look busy
And you're doing your best to avoid me
I'm starting to think one day I'll tell the story of us
How I was losing my mind when I saw you here
But you held your pride like you should have held me
Oh, I'm scared to see the ending
When it all broke down and the story of us
Looks a lot like a tragedy now, the end

Love the dark academia aesthetics of this music video. This and blank space are her bets music videos! I really want her to make a pop rock album. She already done indie why can’t she do rock (or jazz but one in a time)
i mean pop rock is red but i want her to do a rock album, she has the vocals
@@labyrrnts I think Speak Now is more pop rock cause other then State Of Grace, Holy Ground and maybe The Last Time (which isn’t pop rock, more alternative rock) Red is mostly country, pop and some other genres like dubstep and folk but I definitely agree.
