    a good ball bearing won't deform over time, the steel is _incredibly_ hard, designed to support thousands of kilos of force, at high speed

    • @Deafeatist
      @Deafeatist 4 роки тому

      It would deform a bit over time due to heat from collisions.

    • @robmckennie4203
      @robmckennie4203 4 роки тому

      @@Deafeatist steel is going to be much more resistant to that than snooker balls

    • @Deafeatist
      @Deafeatist 4 роки тому +1

      Rob Mckennie I know that but heat will be created during collisions which can deform them. To prove heat is generated, take 2 steel balls and a sheet of paper, fold the sheet of paper in half and unfold so it can stand, then with the 2 steel balls whack them against each other with the sheet of paper in between, a hole will be made obviously but you will also get a burning smell

    There are actually coin operated snooker tables, I know because I've played on one. The colours are slightly smaller, the same as the cue ball, so they always return after potting them. Not ideal I know, but they do exist.

    • @alaeriia01
      @alaeriia01 4 роки тому +2

      It would be possible to make the colored balls with the metal layer so they return, but have the electromagnets switch off when it is time to pot the colors. This could be done with color-sensing optos at each pocket, or by having all the reds funnel to a central storage line and using a switch to detect when it is full.

    You just need to stand next to a pocket when your opponent is playing. The white may be dropping without you touching it. ;-) ... Anyways this vid reminds me of a (very) old mission impossible episode where they replaced the balls with some remote controllable ones with gyroscopes inside. At that time it was pure fiction. But nowadays it should be possible.

    Shady the reason for the metallic content of a snooker cue ball is that there is a Lead additive in the ball to improve its durability due to continuous focused impact due to the impact of the cue tip. Over time the cue ball yellows this is the lead additives degradation which also results in the weight decreasing of the cue ball and by virtue a reduction in size although the latter two are quite negligible in comparison to the yellowing which is always apparent.

    4:50 - No one bothers trying to make a mechanised snooker table because of all the rules surrounding foul shots. A player fouls; pots a red and the other player want the balls replaced. You can't do that if you can't retrieve the red. I've played on plenty of coin operated snooker tables, but that's usually because you play in a dark room where you need to insert money in the machine to keep the lights on.

    In 1998, I travelled to Le Havre, France. One evening we were in a bar, and there was a coin-operated snooker game (but the table was pool-sized). Not sure how it worked. There was a major flaw. It was designed to keep the colours only after all the reds were potted. We didn't know. I potted the last red, then a colour. If we'd had time for another game, we'd have caught one of the reds and retained it until the end of the game.
