If you're afraid your commander might get destroyed before you can activate her ability. You can do the reverse : activate her ability first, and on the stack before it resolves, pay some amount of life at instant speed, like for example, with that wall of blood.
I don't think it works like that right? Or does it?
@@trumsyy9124 I confirm it does work. As stated in the card's official ruling : "The value of X is determined only once, at the time Rowan, Scion of War's activated ability resolves."

Cool video love the deck tech. With regards to someone responding to the paying of life by killing your commander. You can get around that by activating Rowan then hold priority and pay however much life you want.

My wife getting into Magic is why I’m here, she loves the artwork of Wilds and digs the theme of it a lot. I didn’t have a reason to build a Rowan deck, but I do now. Her’s is going to have Peer Into the Abyss with cards like reliquary tower and thought vessel, and as soon as that’s cast it’s practically game over. K’rrik is definitely going in also. She’s going to have a lot of fun with this one.
I wanna point out something about Blood Celebrant and K'rrik since they are mentioned back to back. K'rrik, in addition to mana costs of spells, also lets you pay 2 life for Black mana in activation costs as well. Meaning that with K'rrik on the board, Blood Celebrant is a Treasonous Ogre that can net you *any* color of mana. Another absolute gem of a hit Rowan builders seem to miss is Hall of the Bandit Lord, which removes all of her problems with getting removed as soon as it hits the field. One life-exchanger missed in the video is also Profane Transfusion!
I really recommend Painter’s Servant, declare Red or Black and all of your artifacts are going to be free, making the life swap cards like Soul Conduit have some synergy
Bro I built this deck and I love it!! K’rrik, vilis, razaketh, citadel, disciple of bolas are amazing in Rowan. It’s not fully fine tuned but she’s consistently turn 4 in play tests.

I have been seeing this Commander everywhere and I have been debating whether or not I wanted to build it because I just built Ob Nixilis, Captive Kingpin. So I already have a Rakdos deck I LOVE! But I believe you have convinced me to build Rowan.

I was really expecting a Commander like this. Back in the day, this was the true essence of black mana. Big value means a big cost, no matter what. Gray Merchant of Asphodel is really great when you need to recover and make a lot of life loss to every opponent.
It's rare that I say an alternate art is better looking than a Magali Villeneuve original, but I do think I like the alt art here a little more.
(No shade to Villeneuve, who remains one of the greatest.)
I built a Rowan deck using mostly low cost cards and it’s great!
Big mana X spells is fun but if you want to be really efficient with Rowan mathematically all you really need is x=4 and you play her as a storm deck. It’s a lot more sweaty but it works. But big mana is funnier great episode!
Wheel of fortune works great with vilis. I drew 30 plus cards with this combo.
I feel like people are going to be very afraid of this commander, but I always wanted a way to play group slug efficiently and this guy lets me play those big clunky enchantments for cheap, and things like manabarbs plays right into it.
This is exactly what I'm doing. I've been trying to force this for years now just to play havoc festival... we'll see how it goes 😅

I highly recommend Claim the First Born in Rowan as a way to give her haste without showing your opponents an on board trick.
It's true that you need to protect Rowan but the solution to paying life then tapping is as easy as tapping then paying life in response, the ability is gonna be on the stack so it's gonna resolve regardless of whatever your opponents do, so all you gotta do is use necropotence in response to Rowan's ability, that's it
Prefer the one ring over necro, yeah its a bit slower but at least I'm able to use the cards immediately
I actually prefer Mischievous Poltergeist for dumping my life as it protects itself somewhat, so it's a bit harder to get rid of. same mana cost as wall of blood as well
can you tap rowan, hold priority and then loose a bunch of life at instant speed, then when the ability resolves it goes for the full life loss.
