Marc, you are always honest and on target with your fragrance reviews. I tried Le Male Elixir by Jean Paul Gaultier several months ago and I thought it was good but NOT GREAT. The original Le Male is the groundbreaking fragrance. It is special which is why it is still produced. 20 years from now, we will still find it in stores. Le Male Elixir will have a shelf life of no more than 2-5 years.
While I also don't think elixir is great, I think it will stay for a while. It got a lot of attention and is already a big success. It's a decent fragrance for a small price, and easy to like. Vanilla is always a safe bet. It has great performance and great representative packaging, which flies well with the average consumer. Since JPG is the mega factory of flankers, only very few of them are a success. So the ones that are, like Ultra Male, or Le Parfum, JPG will keep them as long as possible. Elixir is one of them. Thus, I think it came to stay.
When I started collecting fragrances about 4 years ago, I also started to follow a ton of fragrance UA-camrs. Shortly after the pandemic started and I spent a hell lot of time on fragrance social media and I bought fragrances like crazy. About 80 bottles and dozens of decants in 3 years. Admittedly, this helped me a lot to get to know a lot of fragrances, develop my own taste and learn many things about fragrances in general. By now, I have sold many of the fragrances I bought in the beginning, realizing that none of them is bad, but too many are just OK and I hardly ever wear them. Also, I am more into niche fragrances now and only buy designers now and then. I also unsubscribed from most of the 20-30 fragrance UA-camrs I followed. You are one of the very few I still follow and watch regularly. So I am glad that you continued to make videos again after your long break. Keep up the great work, and thank you for your honest, high-quality content!
I really enjoyed reading your comment because I myself acquired a significant amount of fragrances during the pandemic. Great point on discovering fragrances that are good but not great.
thank you robes! for the great review! since you are an expert when it come to JPG lines in your opinion whats your top winter jpg perfume? been thinking about LE male le parfum for a while
It's been a long time my friend. I'm always happy to watch your videos (since 2009?). If you guys want a much better clubbing/going out fragrance 1 million parfum will do the trick. More than 12 years ago Marc suggested me Dior Homme Intense and it's still heavy in my rotation and one of my all time favorites just like robes08 is my GOAT youtube reviewer. Enough said. Cheers Marc, Leo (from Brazil).
Miss the reviewers (you, brandon, tim and a few others i cant remember now) from back in the day - glad you re still doing these. As for these new releases, i rarely turn to designers anymore, as you said about this, for me most lack character
I gotta say I totally disagree with you on this one Mark. I finally got my nose on this 2 weeks ago and I love it. As for everyone universally loving it, sometimes, somethings simply strike a chord with a large swath of the population. ALOTTA people like ice cream, it like Le Male Elixir, has universal appeal. I don't think that makes it bad, usually it's an indicator that someone did something very right I wil say however, that I LOVE ❤️ that you HONESTLY DON'T like it and have zero qualms about setting the record straight. I'm the same way. It means that we can TRUST good 'ol Robes08 to give an unbiased opinion in his reviews. Robes08 is the reason Mugler Angel Men is my favorite fragrance of all-time, because of his HONEST reviews. Side note: I'm fuckin glad I finally got my nose on this in person, because although Mark is one of my favorite reviewers, I TOTALLY disagree with his take on this one...except, for it basically being a vanilla bomb. Which it is. ✌🏾
u missed he point there's plenty of other fragrances that does this fragrance but better, its not an le male they could of named it something else and it'll be better lmao
Well, fragrances are subjective regardless. Everyone has their own opinions. Mark has his, Derry has his, and you have yours. Nothing to debate here mate.@@daniell5740
@robes08 Hello, fellow Canadian 🇨🇦! Back in the day, say 2011, your A*men review was the last one I watched before heading out to The Bay to check it out. I fuckin LOVE it. I've got 3 full bottles in my stash right now. Thanks broski. 😊
I wore Elixir out last night to a comedy club. It's nice but very average to someone who sniffs fragrances as a part time job! 😂 I prefer Parfum. Not that its much more interesting or challenging for a fraghead. It's just more mature and appropriate for an old head like me! 😉@@robes08
Le Male is one of the first reviews I remember from you when I watched in 2011 or so. I have my 2007 batch still and drained my 2001 bottle. Haven’t smelled anything past Ultra Male, which I totally hated. Might need to smell this one.
@@robes08 for sure, she's not into fragrances at all, so she gives very basic like/dislike feedback, and the dumbed down perspective is much appreciated
I love the original Le Male but its nowhere near as potent as it used to be so I stopped buying it. Can you recommend a similar fragrance that still has good longevity and projection?
How different is this from Lanvin Avant Garde. I own Lanvin and seems like JPG borrowed alot of the notes from that composition. Wouldn't wanted to make a redundant purchase
Whatever you might think of Marc's taste in fragrances one thing he is not is a shill. Great integrity and great reviews! I also think that Le Male elixir is WAY overhyped. Le male Le Parfum is the best release since the original and is orders of magnitude better than Elixir. As a collector I do not think Elixir is even collection worthy. I have to say that I agree more often than I disagree with Marc(especially old school Marc) and there isn't a yt reviewer that I fully agree with anyway. Keep up the great work Marc and kudos for not jumping on the yt reviewing gravy train and holding on to your integrity.
i think i told you how le parfum was my final straw with designers lol...but i still watch your designer videos because even though elixir is blatantly, obviously a cash grab you still give a FAIR review. another great vid as usual, thank you
Unlike Le Mâle Parfum, Élixir wasn’t love at first spray. I left it on my shelf for a good month or so then I tried it again. The second time did it for me. I love it now.
I've tested it and frankly it's too syrupy for my taste. Rochas Mustache (EDP) and Zadig & Voltaire This is Him! are better designer vanillas imo (and way cheaper). Cheers!
I mean, i own it, i like it, it gets me unsolicited positive attention when i wear it, but it is far from my favorite designer release of this year. That honor goes to Pasha de Cartier Noir Absolu, followed by Boss Bottled Elixir, and maybe this is a distant third, only because i havent gotten my nose on Ideal Platine Prive, which im sure would bump LeMale Elixir into 4th place. I just want JpG to bring back popeye/superman. Thats not too much to ask for, is it?!? 😆😆
Marc, as always, I have to agree with you. It's a Fragrance Review Channel, not an ad agency. Run a Fragrance Review the fragrance for what it is, not the word salad companies request you to say. Again, don't run an ad agency.
I think the 'influencers' have sullied your experience of this release Marc. I'm only subscribed to around 4 or 5 fragrance channels on UA-cam, and they are genuine enthusiasts.. the shills are obvious and most people who have been into fragrances for more than 5 minutes can spot them a mile away and stay away from their nonsense. I think if you got this before anybody else you would of been really happy with it. Just my thinking 🤔
I think the influencers just make me want to emphasize the point of the bs around this fragrance, I will bet you my whole collection the same reviewers that are giving this best of 2023 etc.... won't talk about this in 2024. However, that does not sway my review on quality. I will never pan just to pan a fragrance, I stand by my taste and my reviews. I stand by my review and my thoughts that were stated in this review.
To play devils advocate what if people on channels only make videos on the fragrances they love, so to the outside viewers it might look like they love everything but they also aren’t making vids on the stuff they hate. That differs from you where you make vids on everything love or hate. Is that a possibility? Just trying to make sense of it. Great vids man, keep ‘em coming
I can't trust a reviewer that isn't opinionated. I don't know, feels like they are billboards at that point. When I look at reviews of hotels, electronics, restaurants etc... I want someone that gives me the good and bad and give their experience.
Not saying you aren't allowed, it's your channel, you can do as you please. I was just wondering why him in particular that's all, just something I picked up on
I don't think this will be discontinued, I think it seems to be selling well and is very popular right now. A lot more than the Le Parfum and that's still in production so far.
agree with you Marc, always thought this is the pinnacle of hyped mediocrity. The original Le Male is amazing. Le parfum is great. This is not. Get the others, not this.
@@harveytrevino2257 no, not really. Then again. I only own a vintage bottle of l'Homme, Ultime and Bleu Electrique. I never felt the YSL vibe when wearing Le Parfum. It's very much a Le Male. The dry down could hint towards an Armani SWY. Not as thick in the base as Ultra Male. If you were to twist my arm I would say Le Parfum reminds me of a vanilla and spice pudding that is clearly Le Male. The iris just smooths the scent out. All three times I thought: Scandal - Caramel + Cookie Dough Vanilla = Elixir.
I very much value your opinions on fragrances. Nowadays, vanilla seems to overpower too many fragrances, including niche brands. I like when vanilla provides light, faint sweetness, as supportive role, not the main player. Otherwise, it becomes too sweet, flat, boring, and feminine.
Hey Marc! I think the unfortunate thing is that you seem to have to talk about a "good" fragrance (by your own definition) in such negative tones and terms simply because others rate it so high. It makes you cone across like the old man yelling at the kids to stay off of your lawn or turn down that loud rock n roll music. Everyone and everything will suffer by comparison when compared with a paragon of the type. And because you rating it a 7 means there SHOULD be more good to talk about than bad. But thats not what happened. Unless you are simply a contrarian. I think you are more than that.
There's a big difference from a 7 to a 8 for me. A 8 in my reviews is on the cusp of being bottle worthy purchase for me and is my "line" from a good scent to a terrible one. Once you hit 7 there are issues and the lower the score the more issues I find. This scents issue is originality and took a big hit on that matter in regard to the whole score. There was some good points brought up in the review but the originality was what I tried to emphasize here. The score should not be what you focus on to be honest but the totality of the review. If I panned a fragrance and gave it a 10 perhaps we should talk but a 7 is a below par release imo. I believe if the vanilla bomb was removed totally from the scent and something else replaced it or a few more things in the back end were introduced this may of went to a 8. Hope this helps.
@robes08 thanks for the reply, Marc. Fair points, all. After all, it's all opinion. I just felt that so much of the negativity was in effort to counterbalance the over hyped positivity. Ultimately I just felt the scent should stand or fall on its own merits, not in comparison to overhyped impossible standards. Almost everything suffers by comparison to overhype. That shouldn't be the standard or benchmark of comparison. With that said, I love when you describe how it may or may not meet comparison with YOUR taste and standard. That's something I can relate to. That's all. I'm only sharing one man's opinion, and that man respects what you do. I'm only sharing some feedback.
Please rank all the le males in your collection. That sounds like a very interesting video idea
It probably changes with the weather. 😂
