    Thank you, awesome video; I'm from Northwest Missouri and never saw blanketed horses on the cattle ranches and farms around me. Moved to the south and see lots of blanketed horses. When I first got here, I thought what on earth is wrong with all these horses? I imagine a lot of them are clipped show horses, which makes sense as you explained it. I just moved a horse who was almost to Florida to upstate SC and getting bad weather coming. Going to get him a blanket for next week or so. I have one old horse that I do keep a blanket on, but only if the wind chill is less than 20, which isn't very often here, maybe a few weeks in January. Glad to know I'm on right track. Saw the post title and thought, maybe I need to listen to this and see if there's something I'm not aware of. Mother nature is best!!!

      You are definitely on the right track! Very old, young, clipped, not acclimated yet to a new area…these are the horses who may need extra help.
      And we can always feel their bodies!
      Thanks so much for watching! 😊🐴

    Great advice 👍 A lot of people don’t realize they are actually making it worse for their horse by leaving a blanket on it all day when temperatures change.

    FYI your flow chart is not readable by Android users.
    I was always told you could tell if a horse is cold or not by the temperature of their ears. Not the fur on their but the actual skin, sometimes it's hard to tell when they are fluffed out. You have to burry your fingers a bit. I have to say it has worked for me. The one that was obviously cold because he was shaking had really cold ears, another had cool ears, third had warm ears, I blanketed approximately and of course I got they "oh does so & so not deserve a blanket?!"

      Hi! I’m sorry about the flow chart link. If you send me your email address I’d be happy to send you one that is readable!
      Definitely if your horse is shivering it’s a sign that they are having trouble keeping warm for whatever reason!
      Sounds like you’re on top of taking good care of your horses!

    When do they need a blanket in NH? If the temps are below zero?

    • @alifewithhorses-meryllynn
      @alifewithhorses-meryllynn  6 місяців тому

      I would definitely think they need protection in sub zero weather! Younger and older horses, or horses with health issues or acclimating to a colder climate may need blanket or sheet assistance in the 30’s. You have to use judgement for each individual horse! 😊🐴❄️

    So my horse will shiver in the winter but we live in texas so do you think he's just not used to the cold or what hes a Welsh pony and hes got a thick coat and ive never shaved him

    • @alifewithhorses-meryllynn
      @alifewithhorses-meryllynn  3 роки тому +2

      Hello Rodeo Rose,
      A few thoughts come to mind. If your pony is new to the area and the local climate, that is a consideration.
      If you are at the beginning of the seasonal temperature change they all may take a minute to adjust.
      Horses can be very sensitive to barometric (atmospheric) pressure changes.
      I recommend that you consult the vet and rule out any physical distress.
      If your pony is generally healthy but is shivering, put an appropriate weight blanket on and see how he does.
      If the temperature changes in the timeframe he is out you want to feel under the blanket and remove it, as it warms up!
      In the end of the day each individual horse is different and may require more or less help than another!
      Let me know how things go! 😊

      @@alifewithhorses-meryllynn ok so if I stick my hand up under his coat has nice and warm has healthy and hes not new to the area but it hasn't snowed like a lot here but that one time it got to almost like -10 degrees so I think it was just so cold that has never experienced that but we had got a lot of snow that time

    Not clear to me: When it snows do you blanket or not? You begin by saying "yes" and end with "no." Could you clarify, please. Thanks

    • @alifewithhorses-meryllynn
      @alifewithhorses-meryllynn  7 місяців тому

      I don’t think you automatically need to blanket a horse if it’s snowing if the horse has its natural coat and they are healthy and acclimated to the temperature.
      But there may be other factors such as age, health, and severity of temperature which guide you to put a blanket on!
      It’s ultimately up to the owner and the needs of the individual horse!
