The original demo version of this game was called "The Big One" and came out back in 1990. Operation Tsunami was the "full" version which I believe Mr. Fong gave away for free. Such an impressive side scroller for how early this was released! There was a color version out there too!

I remember this game was so good, I broke my Lent resolution to "not play any games with shooting in them" just to play it.

I remember The Big One! Thought this looked similar

I remember playing the Big One in the mid 90s. I had to hide it from my parents because it had guns in it. Looked so cool back then.

Played the Big One a lot back then, it was much simpler and less polished but also extremely difficult, as there was no health bar and any kind of hit would kill you instantly. Only 4 areas but getting to the boss, which had to be shot in the head several times, was REALLY difficult

I'm glad you mentioned that those were landmines I was like - "why isn't he jumping on those BUTTONS?!" I would not have lasted very long in this game.

I see this black and white version isn't easy to find online, so I uploaded it here:

I added it to Mac garden as well in .sit form, they only had a 1.0C version from 1991 that crashes in my Basilisk II setup

Yes I remember this being a very hard game. On my LC 575 there were two executables, one for B&W and another for a colour version. Those punks with the knives, for some reason the name "dope fiend" is surfacing from my memory, not sure where I saw that but as a kid I do remember thinking "what is a 'fiend'? should that be 'friend'?"

How have I never played this?! As a kid I was pretty deep into Mac games in the mid 90s. I'm starting to feel like a big fat phony after watching more and more of this channel because apparently I missed out on a lot of gems!

I thought I knew about all the Mac games of that era, but this one is new to me. Nicely done!

genuinely looks more mechanically involved than a lot of arcade and consoles games from around the time in the same genre. impressive stuff for the "computer with no games".

Stumbled on this video while searching the name of the game and creator! Mark Fong was actually very cool with customers. I got "The Big One" as free shareware and played it to death for nearly a year before ordering Operation Tsunami. Mark ran his business from home and actually answered the phone when my dad called about the shipment, haha. Neat channel. Def familiar with many of these games and this era.

Love how all the sound effects come from Mark Fong's mouth

@@insanelygruz You couldn't get them from the internet, but you could certainly sample them from movies, and you could definitely buy records of sound effects. Many Mac games in the early 1990s used sound samples from movies and it's always odd to be watching a movie and notice a sound effect that I knew from an old Mac game!

You should upload those old videos. You had a bunch of good videos that aren't around since you made the second channel. The Operation Tsunami vid, the Creepy Castle vid, that one where you used an old book to program a game. All stuff I'd like to see again.

I think most of them can be found in a playlist here on the channel…

    • @gilgame3317
      @gilgame3317 Рік тому

@@insanelygruz Aha I see that there are some in the playlists that don't show up in the video tab, like the TI-99/4A BASIC Type-in Games Adventure 2 video. Apparently you have it unlisted. Other videos you condensed into one like the Classic Mac Games Vol. 1. But I would still like to see things like the fun Uninvited or Creepy Castle walkthroughs.

Would have played the heck out of it back in the day. Despite being hard, it doesn't look like it's on the level of unfair hard like creepy castle where the enemies just grind you down without any recourse.
Nice use of simple background with pattern backgrounds and simple small objects to give the illusion of scrolling.

Give it a try - I’ve only been able to beat it on easy but it’s one of those games where you only get the true ending on hard mode…

Man, the lack of console-type platformers on the oldschool B&W mac was a real disappointment for me as a kid. I'd have loved this. Kung-Fu Chivalry was another one I remember liking, although I'm not sure if I was just playing it on inadequate hardware or if it was just really really slow.
