    I am currently working on this kit. I think it's a great kit and am having a great time putting it together. I think this would actually be a great beginner level kit because there is a ton of basic modelling packed into this kit, but yet there's enough potential to keep a more experienced modeler entertained.

    FWIW, the iJN Yamato was one of two Yamato class battleships. Her sister ship, the IJN Musashi, was equally armed but was sunk about 6 months before the IJN Yamato.

    • @richardklug822
      @richardklug822 3 роки тому +1

      While presenting an imposing appearance, Yamato and Musashi were massive, and ultimately ineffective, wastes of manpower and scarce resources. Instead Japan could potentially have build four more Soryu class carriers and eight Mogami class heavy cruisers. Operationally these could have been far more useful, and might have tipped the balance in the Coral Sea, Midway and other pivotal Pacific battles.

    Great build ! A couple of build points to mention. The position for the 14 side Joint Plates for the turret barbette are marked on the turret support ring with small scribed lines engraved on top. They do not say where in the instructions as you know ! Instead of using the monofilament for the railings I used .015 in.lead wire, a little tricky but you can create a great looking sag to them ! Great looking build, the colors were spot on ! Now for rest of the ship !

  • @Walkercolt1
    @Walkercolt1 3 роки тому

    Rather than monofilament, I've used super-fine copper magnet wire for railing before. It's a little easier to get a nice "sag" in. 32 AWG wire-wrapping wire stripped also gives a nice effect. Whatever works best for you. Are there brass tampions with the Seal of the Imperial Japanese Navy for each barrel mussel for protection from sea air and sea spray included?
    Some worthless trivia about the caliber of the guns of each countries battleships. It was due to the burning rate of the smokeless powder available to them. Our rifles were 16.1" due to a more advanced smokeless powder than the Japanese had access to, so they chose an 18.1" bore. This was one of the many things the Washington Naval Treaty prevented the export of the technology of making to the Japanese Gov't. from DuPont. The British were entrenched with using the 70-year out-of-date Cordite powder in capital guns (ones that used bags of powder rather than brass shells) with it's excessive smoke, muzzle-flash, limited velocity and range and shell weight, barrel erosion and 15.2" bore limit due to barrel pressure. The Germans used Swedish Dynamit-Noble powders (the most advanced on Earth) and used 15.2" rifles with higher velocities than anyone's, firing heavier shells higher and to longer ranges from superior Krupp steel rifles that were the most accurate. At the end of the War, the supply of Dynamit-Noble powder became a problem and Krupp steel and barrels became an issue of supply. Oil became a major problem for both Germany's and Japan's surface fleets. The Yamato left on her last sortie without the fuel to return to her home base. BTW, is there a good book on the order of fighting the Yamato? Could she fire full 9 gun salvos? Was her secondary armament in full director control? And what about her AA ? I know the Japanese didn't have Posit fuses on AA like we did. Curiosity worm in me...

    If you're interested (or maybe you already know), the rods that support the gun barrel are called trunnions and the things that holds them in place are called capsquares. Or at least they are on 18th and 19th century naval guns . . . Turret looks really cool!

    If I learnt anything from my personal scale modeling experience, it's that simple kits with straight forward structure and easy details like this are the HARDEST to build well. With incredibly complicated models (like large military trucks with all the interior details e.g. Pantsir M1070 M977), you can make many mistakes and still fix them or at least hide them with no problem, and there's sufficient things to show in every angle to distract the eyes from the unpolished techniques from a modeling novice. But this thing? Lord help me if I used the wrong colour to wash or misplaced one photo-etched part even by a little. Brilliant build there Andy!

    Light weathering is definitely the way to go, Yamato was kept in as pristine a condition as possible, basically parade ready. As for the movable internals of the barrels, I have this on order and plan to replace the plastic blast bags with cloth ones. With the internal hinges it means mine will have moveable barrels. Going to have to make a wire frame to keep the shape though, it's going to be in interesting challenge.

    I just had a thought Andy about where those 10 pieces go that you showed at the beginning of the video. You can see where they go if you look at the box art on the front of the box. Just saying :)

    As always Andy a great build. I really love your work. Do you think it would be possible to put the monofilament line through the rail posts and then glue the posts to the turret?

    Andy great vid as usal. Have you ever thought of trying a fan pattern airbrush for the larger areas. Much quicker.

    I wonder if it might have been better to use a material for the blast bags that would have allowed the barrel position to be altered ?

    One more reason for the lack of heavy weathering is that the ship was barely 3 yrs old at the time she was sunk.
