  • First Lady Dawn Moore today celebrated the Global Day of Unplugging on March 1 by participating in a hike and yoga exercises with state officials and local students at Patapsco Valley State Park in Halethorpe. Joined by Maryland Department of Natural Resources Secretary Josh Kurtz; Maryland Department of Health Secretary Dr. Laura Herrera Scott; mental health and environmental experts; and nearly a dozen Howard County high school students, the first lady and all participants disconnected from their phones to experience nature and learn about how teens and adults can disconnect from the digital world to improve mental health.
At Patapsco Valley State Park, Department of Natural Resources staff led the group on a forest bathing hike along the Grist Mill Trail. Forest bathing, a practice that originated in Japan, is focused on taking in the nature around you and soaking in benefits including decreases in stress and increases in serotonin - a mood-managing chemical associated with happiness. A Department of Natural Resources community stewardship specialist who is certified in forest bathing through the Forest Therapy School, led the hike.
