    Dan Baker is a documentary and street photography based in the UK. Primarily taking photos of the British seaside, over the years he has built an outstanding eye for detail, colour, composition and of course the candid nature of the general public. In this episode of Picture Profile Dan shares with us his creative thinking and workflow behind how and why he does what he does.

    A big thank you to Dan Baker for sharing everything he did in this video. With this episode being the start of hopefully an exciting series I appreciate Dan effectively being my test dummy. I hope you enjoy the words of wisdom that Dan had to share as much as I did.

    I've always said it, and I'll say it again. Street is a hard discipline. When I see these seemingly simplistic, but not simple images, I know they hide a weight of intellect, dedication and passion. That's what I see behind these images. I also see the humour and empathy of the 'old greats' which is inspiring to see. Thanks Mike for making this and shining light on such talented artists. Looking forward to the rest of the series!

    I think its so important as a starting photographer to hear a Pro photographer say I take 200 photos, and I might get 4-5 photos that are ok in a good day, and maybe one good one here and there. Because you sometimes see these videos on UA-cam of street photographers walking around, taking photos and it seems like every photo they take is good (you forget that the video you just watched is probably hours if not days of filming all condensed into 10 minutes). When you try it, it doesn’t come out the way you wanted or like you saw in the video, and you get discouraged

    • @Nitidus
      @Nitidus 3 місяці тому

      Watch videos of just one photo walk and you'll notice the opposite. Most of the time, _none_ of the pictures look explicitly great and you'll see the comment section full of hate, like, "How dare they call themselves street photographers! Look at their pictures, it's all worthless!" Really, what do those people expect from one single photo walk? I suppose they never went to shoot street themselves ever in their lives. If you put in a little bit of effort and research the photographers at all, most of them do have some really cool stuff! But that doesn't automatically happen just because you happen to be mic'ed up and have a cameraperson at your side.

    Fantastic video Mike, honestly could be one of your best. The content itself aside, great music and vibe through the whole video. You've obviously done a really good job in your role as the interviewer as well, to be getting such good insights from Dan. And it's great to get alternative perspectives and stuff from other artists whose work you personally enjoy.
    Wouldn't be surprised to see this as a promotion posted by Fuji or Leica or a docu-series on Vice. Honestly just done a perfect job. And can't wait to see more of this style of video!!

I keep looking at setting up a website, Squarespace is looking good. I'm not sure anyone actually]y looks at websites do they, I know I don't, I guess I'm lazy admin wise, I shoot a lot on a daily basis, I use UA-cam to present some of my work which I enjoy I don't try to sell anything, I don't even tout for subs, I am unorganised tech social media wise all I want to do id shoot, so not sure a website would do anything for me, maybe I'll give it a nudge one day. Its kind of sad that you just assume that Dan set this up for a photo. If you had paid attention to the video and what it was about then you'd know that Dan spends a lot of time in Cleethorpe searching for the perfect moment to capture. Dan has clearly dedicated a lot of time to his craft and this location and it pays off in some of the beautiful photos he captures. Rather than just dismiss someones hard work and dedication you should take time to think about how much work has gone into capturing intimate moments like this so you and others can enjoy it.

    Something really interesting happened to me the other day while out shooting. I’ve been doing street photography for a couple years now, but more on the aesthetics side where I find a good composition/light/shadow and wait for someone to walk though it. Now I wanting to dig deeper and capture moments, gestures and layers. The other day, I spotted 2 gestures and a moment. I missed two of those shots because I couldn’t get there quick enough, but I was very happy I was able to spot them. I can feel my photographic eye and perspective transitioning. I can’t wait to follow this new path and create a different body of work for myself.
